Sideboard

My Standard swamp-powered home brew during the Ravnica + Theroes block. Geared towards the local meta at the highly competitive local game store I play at. I would regularly top 8 (usually 4th or 5th) out of 25-30 people.

Most match-ups were very very fun to play against and usually in my favor. Azorious control match-ups were always very long and grindy and incredibly strategic and fun. This is a deck that can go the distance and grind it out. The control match up is about 60-40 in my favor.

The only match up that was a bit of a challenge was R/G monsters at about 40-60. Depending on the opening hands and early game disruption will mostly determine who takes it. Gaze of Granite goes a long way, but at the cost of hitting my own Crypt Ghasts.

The inspiration for the deck was taken from Teysa and Vraska having abilities that kill creatures who deal combat damage. The very early stages of the deck (back in the Innastrad + Ravnica block) was stall early game, to stabilize mid-game, then ramp with Crypt Ghast and my swamps into Debt to the Deathless or Army of the Damned. Since then, it has undergone many, many changes and become much more of a synergy/control deck.

In it's current version, the deck is swamp powered with the powerhouse of the deck being Crypt Ghastfoil for mana ramp, and Lilliana of the Dark Realms for mana fixing, deck thinning, and her ultimate is major game winning ramp.

The deck functions very well even without having a Crypt Ghastfoil in play, but things get nuts when he stays and the deck is "online".

Debt to the Deathless - Major win condition

Mistcutter Hydra - Win Condition, surprise alpha strike

Gaze of Granite - Usually cast for x = 3 or less for a one sided board wipe. Hoses Heroic decks but is versatile enough to keep 1 main boarded, unexpected and wins games.

Blood Baron - Creature beats, life stabilizer, combos with Debt to the Deathless to help get him online

Obzedat, Ghost Council - Creature beats, stabilizer, resilient threat with Whip of Erebos

Desecration Demon - Creature beats

Scholar of Athreos - Early game blocker/stabilizer, late game mana dump and game winner

Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts - Soft lock, creature beats, win condition

Sylvan Caryatid - Ramp into turn 3 Crypt Chast, early game aggro blocker, mana color fixing, and stabilizes early game curve

Erebos, God of the Dead - Card advantage, lock opponent's life down making the life drain more threatening, when online hes big creature beats and defense

Crypt Ghastfoil - Big daddy of the deck and massive enabler for degenerate abuse. Allows for blowout Debt to the Deathlesses and Mistcutter Hydras, ramping into turn 4 Garruk, Apex Predator or Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts, or even dropping two fat creatures the following turn. When dropped on turn 5, it allows you to leave a Overgrown Tombfoil open to Golgari Charm if needed. He also works as a extort dump for additional life drain.

Liliana of the Dark Realms - Tutors shocklands for mana fixing/ramp and deck thinning. Massive pump and spot removal that can kills gods that are "online". Her ultimate hands down wins games.

Vraska the Unseen - She protects herself, repeatedly blows up stuff, and her ultimate + Rogue's Passage wins games and is way too satisfying. Her -3 hits so many amazing targets including Detention Sphere.

Garruk, Apex Predator - Powerhouse planeswalker control, spot removal, and creature beats generator.

Abrupt Decay - Amazing spot removal and hits Detention Sphere, Banishing Light, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, Domri Rade and lots of relevant creatures.

Far / Away - Main board sac and potentially great value Fuse cast.

Golgari Charm - Incredibly resilient and versatile. Minor board wipe, protects against board wipes, hits Detention Sphere, and enchantment creatures like Courser of Kruphix.

Hero's Downfall - Main spot removal and planewalker control.

Whip of Erebos - Life stabilizer, additional creature beats, helps recover and finish after successful board wipes, and extra black devotion. Combos with Obzedat, Ghost Council for very resilient threats.

Watery Gravefoil - Basically replaces a normal swamp to help potentially cast Far / Away for the extra value. Tutorable with Lilliana of the Dark Realms. Between that and Sylvan Caryatid, it is pretty easy to Fuse cast Far / Away.

Rogue's Passage - Makes creature beats much more threatening and Vraska's assassins game winners.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth - Makes the rest of the non-Swamp lands swamps for that extra swamp power!
