ClockworkSwordfish on Algae Blanket Budget

First of all, I love the look and feel of this deck. An old school sort of "Oops! All Swamps" build using Blanket of Night instead is very crafty, especially dipping into green for all its anti-Swamp hosers. Bravo!

However... I can't help but wonder it it's a little too fragile? You have hardly anything to do at one and two mana, especially considering the Algae more often than not won't be playable until after Blanket of Night is out. Also, you don't seem to have many ways to deal with threats that make it to the board... land destruction is great, but if your opponent hurries a fat creature onto the board before you can prevent it, you may be doomed!

You might like Mire Boa as a possible solution to these woes. He can block huge critters all day while you're waiting to draw into your combo pieces, and can switch to the offensive once everything is a swamp and you have control of the board. Stalker Hag is also a good option as far as finishers go - most of your creatures aren't very offensive, and 3 unblockable power for 3 mana is a fine bargain. I hope some of these suggestions help!

Profet93 Thanks for the suggestions and +1! So after looking at it I agree completely with what you said about Faithless Looting and Invasive Species. I think I will completely drop those two for other effects like Lightning Bolt and some Yavimaya Elder. I also like the Mire Boa suggestion so I think I am going to drop a Nimble Mongoose or two to add in that to have it as an option as well. I agree that Vines of Vastwood is definitely better than Ranger's Guile so I am going to swap those out. Rancor I like but am going to sit on for a little while to see how the deck functions with the pump I currently have. Finally the last couple suggestions for the sideboard I agree with and will throw those in as well.

Balaam__ Thank you for the suggestions and +1 as well! I forgot about Yavimaya Elder and defenitly will be using him in the deck thanks for the suggestion! And I think I am going to see how this deck plays for a little bit before I buy a playset of Utopia Sprawl but thanks for giving me a heads up on that one as well!

Idk much about pauper but have you considered adding some removal in the form of Lightning Bolt? Swapping some of your looting effects for bolts seems ideal.

I understand you want to fill your GY but faithless looting is virtual card disadvantage. You get your choice of cards but it doesn't replace itself like thrill of possibility. Flashback is nice, but without any actual card advantage, it's likely that you will run out of gas fairly quickly. Idk any actual card advantage in green thats a common.

Sideboard Card?: Ancient Grudge

Invasive Species - Seems like its only good with springbloom. I dont feel invasive species is a right fit for your build given your lack of ETB creatures. Have you considered swapping it with any of the following....

Rancor - Repeatable pump is nice

Basking Rootwalla - Madness is synergy and it can be pumped

Elvish Visionary - Only draw I know in green pauper. I think running 2-4 of these could be helpful. You really do need draw, badly.

Garruk's Companion - 3/2 trample for seems pretty good. Paired with Rancor or the muscle bursts, it can put in some serious work. Casting cost is slightly hard, but could be worth it IMO.

Mire Boa - Aside from sac, exile and -X/-X effects, it will be hard to get rip of this snake. Hiss at your opponents when you attack with it for extra fun

Overall its a solid build. +1. Be sure to lmk what you think of each suggestion.

legendofa on Good sit-and-wait deck?

I just skimmed the decks on your page. For the Hammer Time deck, start with Sigarda's Aid , Steelshaper's Gift , and Stoneforge Mystic for reliability.

There aren't any over-the-top swamp walk creatures aside from Sheoldred, Whispering One , but it looks like a fun casual deck. Mire Boa needs a home in that one, along with a full set of Evil Presence and at least one more Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or more land search cards, like Sylvan Scrying .

High-level Myr/Thopter lives by the Sword of the Meek + Thopter Foundry combo, with a side of Time Sieve .

Traverse the Ulvenwald over some of the more situational pump spells? Lets you tutor up missing combo pieces, and with all the self milling delirium is probably pretty easy. I think the Mire Boa / Evil Presence combo is honestly kind of bad. On its own, neither card does much. You need Mire Boa, Evil Presence, and Varolz on the field, and Death's Shadow in the yard, and you need to untap, and it isn't even guaranteed to kill your opponent. Have you considered Hooting Mandrills instead of some of those slots? It's strong on its own and wears scavenged counters really well because of trample.

Will-o'-the-Wisp is better than Mire Boa, it's a 1 drop, flying, and it has regenerate.

Mire Boa with swampwalk has been highly successful, and you'd be amazed at how often that combo is played when I have played this deck online and in paper with friends. I agree that Lotleth Troll has significant utility, but for right now I am really comfortable with the deck as a whole. I tried full Lotleth Troll playsets out in this, and they weren't effective at dealing damage. If I switch out for more of them I lose swampwalk, and have to compensate by adding instances that give the creatures trample again (the deck used to run on Lotleth Troll and Predator's Strike). With swampwalk, I can use the hexproof buffs to counter removal and strike with an unblockable creaturw.

GolgariGravedigger Yes, I think Embalmer's Tools would work on that, since Varolz, the Scar-Striped gives creatures in your GY an ability (the scavenge ability is not his).

Other than that, I also favor Lotleth Troll over Mire Boa. They do roughly the same thing, but

  • Mire Boa is relying on either drawing another card or your opponents lands to be evasive.

  • Lotleth Troll has an important utility ability (discard creatures), that Mire Boa doesn't have. It also grows bigger (with its own discard ability), which also gives some use to a late-game Birds of Paradise or redundant copies of varolz.

Suggestions

-1 Varolz, the Scar-Striped

-1 Mire Boa

+2 Lotleth Troll

The reason I think you can do with one less copy of varolz is that you have quite a few tutoring effects, and you get to choose creatures on all of them. So 3 should be enough. You also cannot have more than 1 in play.
