Apparently there was a leak, so wizards put out the release notes for the set early - link to the notes on bottom of linked article

Please discuss

Interesting set, with lots of fun/interesting commander cards.

Since this was actually released by wizards, it is no longer considered a leak.

Oh my god some of those cards sound amazing. Like... how many edh decks do you think are going to be inspired from some of these legendaries?

Someone put together a visual of the spoiled cards.

Of note, the entire set has not been spoiled ... the set is 269 cards and this is just the 140 or so specifically mentioned in the release notes. Still plenty of surprises yet to come!

Hey Argy, it looks like DOM has two Red 'walkers and at least one Minotaur:

Chandra, Bold Pyromancer (Planeswalker deck only)

Legendary Planeswalker - Chandra
5
+1: Add RR. Chandra, Bold Pyromancer deals 2 damage to target player.
-3: Chandra, Bold Pyromancer deals 3 damage to target creature or planeswalker.
-7: Chandra, Bold Pyromancer deals 10 damage to target player and each creature and planeswalker they control.

Jaya Ballard

Legendary Planeswalker - Jaya
5
+1: Add RRR. Spend this mana only to cast instant or sorcery spells.
+1: Discard up to three cards, then draw that many cards.
-8: You get an emblem with "You may cast instant and sorcery cards from your graveyard. If a card cast this way would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead."

Firesong and Sunspeaker (Buy-a-Box Promotional Card)

Legendary Creature Minotaur Cleric
4/6
Red instant and sorcery spells you control have lifelink.
Whenever a white instant or sorcery spell causes you to gain life, Firesong and Sunspeaker deals 3 damage to target creature or player.

Muldrotha sounds absolutely ridiculous, but do I build around him or put him in Tasigur (as I can imagine Muldrotha drawing a lot of hate cos people will be worried about the sheer value it provides in the best colours in the format).

This is really the set wth all the commander goodies. I honestly do not know if it will have any impact on standard, from the cards spoiled.

March 9, 2018 3:30 a.m.

Atavistic says... #9

Also a couple of cards in here I'm liking the look of for Selenia in the new version of Lich and Evra, Halcyon Witness.

Other than that, Tetsuko Umezawa interests me, but I'm not sure how I'd make him work as a Commander really, as he is highly unconventional for mono-blue (but would probably slot nicely in Edric, Spymaster of Trest lists).

March 9, 2018 3:40 a.m.

subrosian says... #11

@Atavistic Tetsuko is definitely an auto-include in my Edric deck! Although if you wanted, you could probably put together a pretty sweet mono-blue Edric-esque deck with Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Deepfathom Skulker, Arm with AEther, maybe some Cipher and Ninjutsu, etc.

Also FWIW usually Japanese names ending in -ko belong to women. So it looks like Tetsuko is a female descendant of the Umezawa clan! Pretty cool if you ask me.

"Also FWIW usually Japanese names ending in -ko belong to women. So it looks like Tetsuko is a female descendant of the Umezawa clan! Pretty cool if you ask me." - Better info than the whole of the release notes there, good catch!

I like the legendary spells and the wizard tribal thing Dominaria has. I think I will build a wizard tribal deck for standard.

I only now learned that Wizards themselves (or at least whever maanages their Chinese website) is at fault here, not someone actually stealing the data, which is good and Wizards finally react fast and well to a leak. Masters 25 releases this weekend and we already its not good. Is this Wizards trying to make us look the other way with Masters 25? Coincidence - I think not!

Anyways, we now know a lot and I like where the set is going and plan to buy a bunch.

March 9, 2018 7:29 a.m.

Argy says... #16

Did people catch this in the release notes?

"In every Dominaria booster pack, you'll find at least one legendary creature."

Wot? Did I read that correctly?

Boza says...

"I honestly do not know if it will have any impact on standard, from the cards spoiled."

As a Standard player I can tell you right now that the cards spoiled have already set my mind a-brewing.

Why do you not like Masters 25?

Plenty of excellent staples in there.

March 9, 2018 7:31 a.m. Edited.

Just read the whole damn paper...this is awesome. Like...'I'm kinda out of words'-awesome. A new Umezawa, thorn elemental as a reprint. Legendary sorceries? One freaking legendary creature per pack? Dafuq? I can't believe this is real.

Btw: Called it with the legends :D

March 9, 2018 7:33 a.m.

Argy says... #18

seshiro_of_the_orochi the way this set is designed doesn't surprise me.

Standard is where Wizards makes a lot of their money, and Standard numbers have dropped significantly.

They've been trying to address this in different ways, but nothing has really succeeded.

Each new set is touted as the one that will bring people back to Standard.

The promise of a Legendary Creature in each pack might just do it.

March 9, 2018 7:36 a.m.

Boza says... #19

Argy, while I am not a fan of masters 25, because it is a super expensve draft set that has no reason being expensive, nor a good reprint set with about a dozen at best cards that are reprnted, plus the fact that nything not reprinted jumps up in price, so the idea is less apealling.

That is a side note though.

I also mentioned that the set is not good for standard, because within those cards, I did not see much that combined well with previous sets. I may be wrong and evaluating 140+ cards in one morning is not an easy task nor is it one that produces accurate results, but it is my gut feeling.

March 9, 2018 7:42 a.m.

'Magic has adopted "they" as the preferred third-person-singular pronoun for a player, replacing "he or she."'

Look away now if you don't like swearing.

Oh thank fucking crap.

At last I don't have to always be secondary.

Good move, Wizards.

March 9, 2018 7:46 a.m.

pskinn01 says... #21

My thoughts are the left over cards are either cards that need no explanation such as a creature without an ability, or reprints. I'd like to see Phyrexian Altar reprinted in this set as it would make sense being here as a left over from the invasion. And has no gatherer rules.

This set just busting with commander usable cards. Legendary sorceries are usable in any deck, just need your commander in play.

Looking forward to this set, just need to decide if just adding to one if current decks, or scrapping one to build new decks.

Teferi's Oath is EXACTLY what a superfriends deck need

March 9, 2018 8:33 a.m.

Boza says... #25

It is an Oath card - does that mean Teferi is now a part of the Gatewatch?

March 9, 2018 8:34 a.m.

Damn...this seems true.

Argy: seems correct. But trying to make money by interesting and promising set design seems a lot better than by powercreeping the shit out of their sets.

March 9, 2018 8:50 a.m.

AgentGreen says... #27

It sure does.

And looking at Teferi; two questions; one lore and one game

Lore: HTF did he get his spark back?

Game: U/W Control becomes MUCH better in this set?

Argy says... #28

AgentGreen just play /x Control and you will LOVE Llanowar Elves.

Llanowar Elves, oh how I welcome thee back to Standard. Going to have fun casting turn two Steel Leaf Champions!

So far lots more goodies for Commander than for Standard or Modern with new Karn as the exception, but still 130+ cards left to be revealed. Including new Skyship Weatherlight?

It's nice while also being upsetting at the same time that Dominaria looks to have gotten tribes right. Ixalan was suppose to be a tribal plane, but the few tribal cards in the leaked cards for Dominaria are far better than anything tribal in Ixalan. Tribal Wizards looks very fun, supported by new Wizard Lightning Lightning Bolt lite and Wizards Retort Counterspell lite. All the Wizard support revealed so far kind of reminds me of energy's powerlevel.

Nice to see Goblins and Saprolings are back. Hoping for more Elves and an Elf lord to be revealed in the rest of the cards.

New Karn is nuts and Teferi in combination with Seal Away is a nice boost for Azorius or Esper Control. New Jaya is a big disappointment compared to the others, but red does already have Chandra, Torch of Defiance, can't get much better than her for a red Planeswalker.

It's refreshing to see no previous Gatewatch Planeswalkers getting cards for the main set, about time. I expected Gideon and Liliana, especially Liliana, to get a card because in the story they're teamed up searching for Belzenlok.

Having both allied and enemy Check lands together in Standard opens up a lot of deck building possibilities. A single Basic land can now turn on four different Check lands letting them ETB untapped this is a huge boost for manabases in Standard. I'm very surprised by this I thought Pain lands would return because the names of the lands are regions on Dominaria.

March 9, 2018 9:36 a.m.

I have been collecting legendary cards since 7th edition.

I love and despise this all at the same time...SO MANY LEGENDARIES... so little money :(

Gonna have to get a side gig to pay for my Legendary Addiction.

Also I finally have an angel lord for mono white tribal and Tiana the Red/White Angel looks very buildable and not an all out aggro deck like boros angels has been :)

They also addressed players want for a Izzet artifact commander in the new Jhoira.

Ape Legend... didn't know I wanted one till I read it.

This set is addressing a lot of player wants as far as commander goes and while im sure some will complain thats certainly all right by me :)

"New Jaya is a big disappointment"

Not if you match her with Firesong and Sunspeaker, she's not.

"They also addressed players want for a Izzet artifact commander in the new Jhoira."

ikr FINALLY.

March 9, 2018 10:58 a.m.

Yeah, Im stoked for new Jhoira.... nothing wrong with a card that lets me draw off almost every spell in my deck. I don't know if she's got standard potential but I never count out anything that gives card advantage. Plus we still have kaladesh block when this drops so artifact strategies are still a thing... and vehicles though shes not in the normal mardu colors for that.

There are simply too many cool new commander options though. I think ill have to wait to see art to pick a few to work on. I know Lyra Dawnbringer will be my new angel commander but I won't really have to change the deck much for that since it was already life gain centric :)

Has anyone else noticed that Voltaic Servant combos infinitely with Time Vault? And for as well, not bad. Vintage potential?

Izzet artifact Commander, angel tribal commander, not to mention a Boros Commander for burn decks? I love this.

Also Argy same on the they as gender neutral pronoun thing.

Thanks to everyone who pointed out that Lawnmower Elves are coming back! I totally missed that earlier, and I'm even MORE excited by the set now.

I'm especially pumped because there was an article in io9 a while back featuring some of the art from Dominaria. I was convinced the last piece was Llanowar Elves and my buddies were all, "No way will they print that!" ... heh!

Almost certainly Llanowar Elves: Show

Any ideas though on what cards these pieces go to?

Can't figure these out yet: Show

Im betting the dude with the hammer is the red guy that creates 3/1 elementals when voltroning him and the girl is one of the Knight legendaries.

March 9, 2018 12:54 p.m.

The Knight looks to me like she could be

Aryel, Knight of Windgrace

She's a black white knight that makes knights and uses knights to kill things.

March 9, 2018 1:15 p.m.

Argy says... #39

Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain

Legendary Creature – Human Artificer

3/3

Whenever you cast a historic spell, draw a card. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)

The things that makes this a perfect Commander for my Izzet Artifact deck is the fact that I've been using Jori En, Ruin Diver, for draw, and because she is so cheap to cast.

So, I get better draw, it's only more to cast, and it makes Artifacts matter.

Perfect.

A while back I was bemoaning the fact that we didn't have a decent Izzet Commander for Artifact decks, and some people asked me what more did I want, as Wizards had made Breya, Etherium Shaper.

This. This is what I wanted.

clayperce could that be Jhoira?

Colours are very Izzet, with lots of metallic surfaces, and looks like she could be a Captain.

I'm a big fan of being able to Lightning Bolt planeswalkers directly. Redirecting damage through some obscure rule was particularly clunky, and not really accessible to new players.

The other, non-substantive changes to how they phrase rules text also seem quite nifty, removing unnecessary language. Gatherer searches will be fun in the coming months--I just know I'll inevitably forget some of these changes and make many fruitless searches using the older language.

I have not had time to go through the list in depth, and am really looking forward to doing so this evening.

I did see the new Mox, that's going to be a pretty great card for commander, particularly with low-costed commanders you can quickly drop on the board. Sure, it can't easily ramp into your commander, but an additional Command Tower? Yes please, even if it is not useful until after I've cast my commander.

Super excited. From what I've seen so far, it looks like there will be lots of great options for all formats.

Methinks with the elves back in play, Dinos may be a thing going forward

March 9, 2018 2:19 p.m.

Turn 1 Llanowar Elves in to a turn 2 Steel Leaf Champion seems like a great start for a mono green stompy deck. Dinosaurs or otherwise.

Heck Turn 1 Llanowar into a turn 2 Jadelight Ranger is gonna be happening alot to I bet.

Follow up either of those plays with Ripjaw Raptor or Crocodile of the Crossing seems mean. And would make a turn 4 Ghalta, Primal Hunger pretty easy to hit and you would still have mana left back to protect it.

March 9, 2018 3:10 p.m.

Argy says... #44

Dinos are already a thing.

March 9, 2018 3:13 p.m.

beakedbard says... #45

So you have to play Wizards to get Counterspell and Lightning Bolt well here's to hoping that tribe is actually viable. I'm really surprised on the reprint of 1cmc mana dorks though didn't they say that was never happening in standard again? I do love how a lot of the cards are callbacks to other cards though that is always nice to see.

March 9, 2018 4:48 p.m.

OmegaAura113 says... #46

I want to make an EDH combo deck around Belzenlok already. He doesnt seem as good as Razaketh for the competitive scene, but with a pseudo-Ad Nauseam ability at ETB rather than cast and only 6 CMC, it could be promising.Also...SQUEE!!

March 9, 2018 5:36 p.m.

SkyknightXi says... #47

Hah. I had a feeling Bolas didn't succeed in extirpating the Umezawa. (Although Tetsuko sounds derivative from Tetsuo. Or maybe that was on purpose, to drive more salt into Bolas's remembered wounds...) I have a hunch that she's going to become a planeswalker somewhere along the line. Within the next two sets after Dominaria, I'm guessing.

March 9, 2018 5:43 p.m.

They had me at the new Darigaz. I hope the other Primeval Dragons get reincarnated! I am a fan of the way the handled the immense lore of Dominaria with the saga cards.

There seems to be great considerations to what standard needs right now (Llanowar Elves for example).

It's just a shame that this leak will take away from the M25 hype (can't wait for that set by the way).
