Modern Horizons 2 Wish List

Baseless Speculation!

I just wanted to see what the community wants to see in Modern Horizons 2. I honestly dont have any good guesses... but im excited to see what we are gonna get!.... I thought the snow support was kinda neat so maybe they will revisit the idea of giving an older mechanic more support in this set like Hellbent/Cumulative Upkeep or something?

Is there an existing card out there in particular that anyone thinks has the potential to get introduced into Modern like Memory Lapse or Jazal Goldmane ?

Is there any type of concept card that you wish your deck had available to use as a tool? I thought Prismatic Vista was a nice gift for just about every deck.

definitely seems like a fair card.... maybe find a home in a Death's Shadow deck or just help burn be burn?

Support for lower-tier tribals. It's gonna happen. Personally, I'd like to see some more love for Skeletons, Assassins, Skeletons, Plants, Skeletons, Samurai, and Shamans.

And maybe Skeletons.

I will always be a sucker for tribal support! Plague Engineer was not cool lol.

Insects need more support. They are incredibly prevalent in mtg but have no support

I want 3-color basic fetches. Or even just 2-color basic fetcher.

Like fetchlands, except they only get basic forests or basic plains, or whatever.

Or, honestly, the full cycle of Mirage Fetches(enters tapped, but they fetch untapped)

Or single color fetches -- only gets any mountain, or any forest.

But I'm still fine if Marsh Flats and Verdant Catacombs hit $15 for a week.

I wouldn't be sad for slow fetches coming into modern... by no means do they replace the Zendikar fetches but something like Grasslands would just be nice for budget players/people trying to get into modern.

shadow63 says... #10

Don't we only have half the slow fetches?

I want to see provoke on some new cards.

Also a second set of Pact cards would be great. Preferably for cards like Disenchant , Command the Storm , Zombify , Defend the Hearth and Relearn . (Pact after costs may need to be adjusted of course.)

Preferably something that dosen't break the format in half

Provoke is out dated or did you mean convoke

plakjekaas says... #14

We have the basic fetch, it's called Prismatic Vista and it was printed in MH1. It's become an expensive card, a reprint of that would be nice.

I really want the rest of the talismans to be reprinted. Also, I don’t any really expensive/op cards like force of negation.

@shadow63, No I specifically mean provoke found on cards like Deftblade Elite and Hunter Sliver . I know the effect has largely shifted to green for cards like Prized Unicorn and Turntimber Basilisk , but I want to see provoke return on some non-green cards as the effect hasn’t been completely scrubbed off of white and red cards such as Odric, Master Tactician and Impetuous Devils . Provoke also has this cool rules interaction when it’s put on a creature with Menace. If a creature with provoke and menace provokes a creature an opponent controls one of two things happens depending on their boardstate. If the opponent only has one creature to block with, that being the provoked creature, the creature doesn’t block the creature with provoke and menace but instead loses the ability to block for the turn. If the opponent has two or more creatures that can block the opponent must block the creature with menace and provoke with their provoked creature along with another creature of the opponent’s choice. I love how this interaction works out and I’d love to see a creature or even an equipment that lists provoke and menace on the same card. I have this custom card dedicated to the idea actually, it’s a 0/1 artifact creature with menace, provoke and the text line, “As long as this creature’s power is 0 it has indestructible.” And if that last effect makes it too strong I could put some drawback on top of all that like giving it prowess or some line of text that boosts it’s power off of something an opponent does just to make it vulnerable to removal/combat. I like the concept of provoke so much that I use Deftblade Elite and Infiltration Lens in one of my commander decks as a draw engine and I’d love to see a new/better creature to replace the deftblade, preferably one with menace or haste along with its protection ability, but at this point I think I’m making too specific of a wish to have happen. Regardless I seriously want to see provoke get a shoutout in some creative way in Modern Horizons 2, or at the very least give me some cooler art by reprinting Deftblade Elite in the set!

It's a bit of rules nightmare. Also it is currently sitting at 9 on the storm scale

March 11, 2021 3:21 p.m.

TriusMalarky says... #18

Storm scale is actually 100% irrelevant for Horizons type sets. I mean, Storm and Dredge were pretty much 10s and they both got printings in MH1, and honestly none of them broke the game. We also got things like Cascade, Slivers, and more, all that we were told (via storm scale) we wouldn't ever see again.

Storm Scale is largely satire or exclusively relevant to Standard sets.

March 11, 2021 4:10 p.m.

Icbrgr says... #19

To piggyback on that I think there are "obsolete" mechanics that give room to introduce and impact the format without breaking it.... take shroud and regenerate for examples.... they are nearly always bested by hexproof amd indestructible however maybe a 4 or lower cmc creature with those mechanics could be more balanced because of the drawback but still playable.

March 11, 2021 4:19 p.m.

TriusMalarky says... #20

2/2 that reads "at the beginning of each turn, regenerate ~" would be interesting. It's a 3 mana 2/2 that just doesn't die in combat or against removal without some work.

March 11, 2021 4:23 p.m.

shadow63 says... #21

I agree with them getting rid of regenerate as it is really unintuitive but yeah shroud should make a come back as it can help balance things that would get hexproof

@shadow63, the storm scale only pertains to the likelihood we’ll see that mechanic in the next standard set which means it has no basis for non-standard sets like this one. For example, Modern Horizons 1 used the mechanics buyback, delve, dredge, fateful hour, level up and storm from just what I can recall off the top of my head. Those mechanics respective storm ratings are: 8, 8, 10, 8, 8 and 10. I’m certain I missed a couple more that fall into the high end as well. If Modern Horizons 1 is indicative of what we can expect from Modern Horizons 2 it’s that this is the set meant to produce cards on the high end of the storm scale as they’re unlikely to be printed anywhere else. Standard needs the storm scale for the sake of not confusing new players while also keeping the Historic format healthy from the player side as well as to make card design easier for the design team who has to keep the overall power level weaker in those formats. Modern can take much more of a hit and they put a lot of creativity into the cards that reimplemented previously taboo mechanics as well. Yes, Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis destroyed Modern, but Magmatic Sinkhole hasn’t, which shows even broken mechanics can be utilized in non-game-breaking ways for eternal formats unlike rotating formats.

As for provoke being a rules nightmare I personally disagree as the casual EDH groups I run my draw engine against seem to grasp the keyword better than figuring out how to resolve multiple ETB’s or who has priority to respond next in the midst of a counter war. Even if there are circumstances where the keyword does have absurd or abstract rules interactions I’m sure Wizards could easily re-contextualize the card text to absolve those issues just as they have done for Madness and Phasing as of recent. If Lure type effects can exist even in Standard I’m sure provoke isn’t beyond repair.

TriusMalarky says... #23

Hogaak reprint plz wizards he's so expensive I need him for Modern Convoke

OOOOOOOHHHHH double convoke -- each creature taps for 2 mana for it. Or 3, but it costs like 15 mana . . . so you just tap 5 creatures and jam it into play.

Or really just a bunch of things with convoke and "you can't spend mana to cast this". Who needs delve or whatever, I want Myr Superion type crap

Okay, this may be late, but I felt maybe I should comment on this thread. Here is what I hope for:

-I probably have a pretty controversial opinion regarding modern horizon 2. Here me out... I don't want them to print powerful tier 1 cards. The decks out on top don't need any support, and I can't trust wizards with designing powerful modern cards.

-I don't want them to just simply print legacy powerhouses and essentially warp modern into a slightly cheaper legacy. I also don't want them to print cards that make others obsolete. Variety is one of the best parts of making decks. I don't just want to go, "I am making a blue deck so I am automatically putting in Force of Will or Counterspell " because all other interesting options are obsolete. Magic is best when they limit power in a meaningful way.

-I want Modern Horizons 2 to focus on archetypes of Modern's past and also on tier 2 decks. This is where the heart of Modern actually is. No offence, but the competitive side of modern has always been toxic.

-I want to see more of that spell with land spells from Zendikar Rising. I realize they can be used in combo decks, but my mana-bases have never been more engaging. I want these, as well as any new useful utility card and can-trips at common and uncommon (with them being more powerful given a particular deck archetype)

-I want the rare pool to consist of: for EDH cards (jank for modern but interesting enough to make jank decks with them), some middle of the road cards that some and not all decks will play, and only 2 or 3 mythics that are powerful but only in a specific not top tier archetype (or perhaps one to revive old modern archetypes)

-I want them to once again give us tribal support. Maybe even bringing to light some in the background. Rats, Saprolings, Faeries, More ninjas (I just like them), bears, cats, spirits, zombies, and so on.

-A new Splinter twin (maybe if not unbanning it, maybe make a more acceptable one). Don't need to be tier 1 material, its just an interesting card design.

- Careful Study or a red color shifted version. The thing about Faithless Looting (plz no new artwork), was that the flashback to me was a bit too much. I won't mind one with rummaging instead of Looting (discard then draw)

- Sapphire Charm (just a personal favourite of mine, maybe possible since they did mention phasing in recently

- Basking Rootwalla

-Snow land Hate. This may be unusual to say, but there is currently no real reason not to run snow lands over basics. If everyone runs snow lands if powerful snow land cards are printed in the future, the price of basic lands will go up and people won't get to use the precious artword for basics mtg has had for years. Essencially, I want a BloodMoon but for snow lands. If they do this, I would love to see MH2 to expariment more with snow lands and permanents.

-Bogle, Heroic, and or Aura support. Other on another note, make an even better tier 2 vehicle deck for modern.

-Worse Mox Opal

-Modal Charms

-Finishing the Triomes, Borderpost. Oh dude, what if there was fetchable mana-rocks that enter tapped that ordinarily cost 3.

-Another Black card that is enchantment removal.

I agree completely dsdude3021... im excited for MH2 but terrified about God-Tier cards being introduced/I personally dont think the format needs more power or auto-include cards for existing decks.... but i love the idea of bolstering other strategies/opening up new ways to play.
