Faithless Looting & Hogaak Banned

Modern forum

Faithless Looting & Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis have been banned in modern.

Stoneforge Mystic has been unbanned.

Faithless Looting ban makes me sad.

YYYYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Sorry about your looting.

BUT WE HAVE STONEFORGE MYSTIC

Looting ban makes me sad too. I won't miss the decks, but I will miss the card. How sad when the graveyard interactions are so powerful that a card as innocent and 'bad' as Looting get the axe from the format. It's card disadvantage. Modern was in a truly sad spot if card advantage was meaningless in the format.

yeah the stone forge hype is pretty real for me. I'm super sour that I've been sitting on buying a playset for a few years, but it happens.

faithless is going to be hard to replace. I've got some pure jank that's essentially glued together by faithless, so I'm sour.

Unpopular opinion:

SFM won't be a big deal in Modern.

Change my mind!

MoonHollow124 says... #6

It will be a bigger deal than no deal but not as big a deal as everyone thinks. I really think that Life from the Loam should have gotten the ban because hollow one is pretty dead now.

August 26, 2019 11:38 a.m.

well at least I got to play mono red phoenix for a few weeks..... feels bad... On the bight side now that I expect to see little to no grave hate I can break out storm again X)

my friend would probably burn his collection if Life from the Loam got banned.

also, I also don't think SFM will make a huge splash. I'm just always in favor of things leaving the ban list, that's why I'm happy about it.

August 26, 2019 12:08 p.m.

MoonHollow124 ....what? Why would Life from the Loam get banned? Why would Hollow One care? I don't understand at all.

sergiodelrio there are a lot of Stoneforge fans that have been lingering about waiting for this day. Regardless of whether it's good or not, it will see a lot of play, at least at first. I think it will be impactful but balanced, much like Bloodbraid Elf and Jace, the Mind Sculptor .

Death and Taxes might become better than Humans. Giver of Runes is a very real card for that deck.

I really hope Stoneforge isn't too good. I want it here to stay.

@Nemesis 100% agree

@ToolmasterOfBrainerd never said it was a bad call, and also I'm very much pro unbannings and happy for the people who want to play the card.

That being said, see my OP.

Time to Caw Blade on dat azz! Aaawwwwwww yyyeeeeeaaaaa bbbooiiiii!!!

so after all the hype dies around sfm, where do you folks think she'll settle? 40? 50? higher?

August 26, 2019 1:02 p.m.

60 at least until a reprint. Unless she's a total bust. I'm surprised Batterskull and Sword of Feast and Famine haven't followed her yet. I definitely expected those to be through the roof as well.

I wanted to get a stoneforge mystic before for other formats and my lgs didn't have one and now it's going to be insanely expensive even when it will literally all it will do is make D&T better and a few fringe strategies better.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd I forgot about phoenix. I think on the dredge front LftL would be a better ban because it would drastically alter but not kill the deck. I'd say for phoenix, Manamorphose might be a better ban because of the $10 price tag for a common. And hollow one now has not much in the way of controlling it's discard, and will be much more random.

@ SMASHER101 An entire archetype might now be viable where it hasn't been for more than half a decade. SFM was the defining card that powered Caw Blade control. It's unlikely to be one of the most powerful archetypes in the format, but with it's primary engine unbanned it will at least be present again. I would not be surprised to see the archetype shift into WUGB given the access to duals and Birds of Paradise holding amazing value for the strategy with the ability to then run the best possible interaction and disruption to supplement it's main game plan.

What are everyone's opinions on Izzet Phoenix viability in the format now.

The reality is that Mono R was favored due to racing Hogaak but Izzet is all around the better Phoenix variant in a normalized metagame.

With Looting gone, does anyone think it can still be top tier with Izzet Charm perhaps? Or do people think it's flat-out dead.

Thoughts?

August 26, 2019 1:39 p.m.

Dead and gone. I hope. They could remove Phoenix and looting and play other 'spells matter' cards, of which there are many. But they lose many of their explosive draws.

xtechnetia says... #21

Looting gone means people might scale back on spamming graveyard hate, which is one of the things that made people try over Phoenix.

Either way, Looting ban hurts the deck. Nothing's as efficient as Looting at what it does in Modern, that's why the card had so much controversy around it. I personally expect Phoenix as a shell to "live" but be knocked down a couple of tiers.

Not to happy to see SFM unbanned. Now I'll probably have to buy some.

On the note of Hogaak and looting bring banned, good riddance.

I also believe that many people will dial back on GY hate slowly, sort of a PTSD thing, while others will be trying to next level people who bring GY hate after the bans. But Leyline will probably be dropping out of sideboards.

I've got a janky taxes deck that I'd love to throw her into, so she seems fun for me.

Super fun to hear about SFM being unbanned and look i forward to seeing "new" brews with it..... I personally am sad about Faithless Looting because I had fun with it in a janky Spellweaver Helix brew with Cruel Ultimatum and retrace sorceries...by no means competitive but F.L. definitely helped.

MoonHollow124 says... #25

My prediction: Phoenix will go to UR TiTi. Dredge will try and compensate for the loss but now it doesn't have much to do on turn one that is super relevant...probably going Stitcher's Supplier rout because that card is dumb.

August 26, 2019 4:29 p.m.

SMASHER101 says... #26

I think dredge will play Insolent Neonate instead and if people pull their grave hate it will be very good.

August 26, 2019 6:13 p.m.

I was just about to buy a SFM yesterday! Should have pulled the trigger, oh well. What are the chances it gets a reprint anytime soon?

August 26, 2019 7:48 p.m.

xtechnetia says... #28

Wizards has stated that there will be no more masters sets for the foreseeable future, but they promise reprints to come in some form. So far no word on what that'll look like.

My personal guess is that they'll eventually introduce something similar to masters sets under a different name, à la From the Vault being replaced by Signature Spellbook.

August 26, 2019 8:12 p.m.

StopShot says... #29

I hope in the upcoming set they make a Faithless Looting card at 2 mana. I've never been a fan of Cathartic Reunion . Maybe at 2-mana they can drop the flashback, but give it something like instant speed or scry. The fact so many decks run Faithless Looting really is no different than all the decks that run Lightning Bolt , but Bolt has a reputation and legacy in the Modern format whereas the Looting does not. I look forward to a future where Looting is pushed to be unbanned with the same fervor that was given for Stoneforge Mystic . For now I guess I'll consider running Ransack the Lab as a replacement.

My Flayer of the Hatebound deck is crying tears of fire.

What are the chances of Careful Study being printed in a modern legal set?

In other news, Batterskull is up 183%.

August 26, 2019 10:02 p.m.

The real casualty here is my Tibalt madness deck, sad times. I'm surprised at the ban given how many decks it enabled (although, of course, that was the problem!) but not sorry. The point of cards like Phoenix and Vengevine is that they should take some effort to set up as recursion, not just be able to dump two at a time into the zone they want to be in while refilling your hand with spells you want to actually cast. A reprint that added "at random" to the discard clause and removed flashback would be fine, possibly even at one mana. Unbans are good, hopefully we'll see Pod return on the future as well (Twin seems too much to hope for despite being unlikely to run rampant). Also did anyone else pick up on how Mr. Duke said they were keeping Bridge From Below banned to "prevent the prevalence of graveyard decks"? Definitely not because they don't want to admit they got the wrong card last time....

Does stoneforge work with panharmicon????!!@

August 27, 2019 5:44 a.m.

StopShot says... #34

@whitetailfreak22, Yes, you will be able to tutor up to two equipment cards. It's ability that puts the equipment onto the battlefield is not changed though.

August 27, 2019 5:53 a.m.

StopShot soooo.... if i blink sfm she will trigger twice? Now what if i have lets say a harden scales on board or doubling season and attach a wepon to a creature at instan speed will that double my wepons +1-+1's triggers also?

August 27, 2019 6 a.m.

Also if i blink her her paid ability won't be able to be used right? Cause of summoning sickness right?

August 27, 2019 6:08 a.m.

StopShot says... #37

@whitetailfreak22, If you blink SFM she will trigger twice. If you blink her once and you had Panharmonicon out for both times then you'd tutor up for four equipment.

The equipment needs to put counters on the creature for it to double with Doubling Season or Hardened Scales . If you equip a creature with Short Sword it only gets +1/+1 once. If the equipped creature is equipped with an equipment such as Armory of Iroas it will get double the +1/+1 counters.
