Abusing the O-Ring effect:

Deck Help forum

Posted on July 16, 2014, 5:28 p.m. by Femme_Fatale

I have recently made a new deck as a comeback from my 6 month hiatus. Based off of Athreos, God of Passage , as that was the first card I saw in [JOU] that I thought I could reasonably build a deck around.

Noticing that my deck can abuse the O-ring effect of creatures quite effectively, I found myself two other o-ring creatures: Fiend Hunter and Leonin Relic-Warder and am wondering how they would do in my deck.

I have also been told of a neat way to avoid the City of Brass damage. But that is to change it to Mana Confluence and put in some Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth .

Basically I am thinking of doing this:

Your insights would be greatly appreciated, and I welcome additional changes or add-ons I should do. If we are going to be having a lengthy discussion, you can always join me in T/O's Steam Group's Chat Room~

Oh, I'm thinking of swapping my Dark Confidant 's for Sign in Blood 's as well. And since I am not using the swords, I can swap a Cartel Aristocrat for a Bloodthrone Vampire .

So for recap:

Removing:

What does everyone think about this? I also may be deciding to leave the sisters and Bloodthrone Vampire untouched, and use the Cartel Aristocrat subtraction as the 2nd Blood Artist .

OR I could add 4x Sign in Blood s in lieu of 3x Sign in Blood s and 1x Bloodthrone Vampire .

Mangara of Corondor is another if you don't feel the speed is a bad trade off

I can't sac Mangara of Corondor for an O-Ring effect VampireArmy. There must be an ETB and a LTB effect on the card on two separate lines.

I'm going to do the changes, and someone can change my mind afterwards. My budget version of this deck is destroying the original, and it contains most of the changes.

Now thanks to Leonin Relic-Warder I no longer have a need for Maelstrom Pulse .

Any idea as to what I should put in my sideboard for exchange?

Here is a list of various cards I have compiled as alternatives.

Actually, Mangara of Corondor can be used repeatedly if you sacrifice it in response to using the ability. The ability is independent of the creature, so Mangara dies and the targeted permanent is removed from the game in stacking order.

Oh good point freezerboy. However Fiend Hunter wins by not having to tap, which is stalled by summoning sickness. So I can abuse Fiend Hunter sooner and sometimes, multiple times, whereas I can't guarantee Mangara of Corondor will even get abused once.

Makes sense, as long as you have a way to bounce them or sacrifice before the second ability on Fiend Hunter activates.

Fiend Hunter , Leonin Relic-Warder and Tidehollow Sculler without Restoration Angel to abuse them seems loose.

That's more of an EDH/standard ability thispersonisagenius. As I won't be getting 6/7 mana for an O-Ring creature and a Restoration Angel play in lots of games. Also by the time I can abuse the O-Ring creatures, there isn't really any point as either A) their hands are all gone, B) I'm already about to lose, and C) by the tme I can get that combo out they will already have too many permanents to make exiling 1 permanently, and the other temporarily, worth while.

And besides, Restoration Angel holds almost no benefit by itself should I have no O-Ring creatures. Flash is kinda pointless because I've got lots of removal already, and flying isn't strong enough to hold a benefit in this deck.

The only thing in modern that I know of that uses Restoration Angel is Gifts Reanimation in either Esper or Junk colours.

Restoration angel is a staple of UW/r decks. Thought I'd throw that out there. Against an opponent only packing lightning bolt type removal it can kill. That being said it's a creature best used in tempo decks So do with that as you will

I see now, never actually played against an U/W/r deck with Restoration Angel in it. However I can agree it is a lot more useful in tempo/control builds, where you have the mana to use it appropriately. However, my deck thrives on it's low cmc, and it's ability to synergize together with all the cards to create a massive advantage. It's more of a combo build then anything and Restoration Angel doesn't fit the bill for what it is trying to achieve.

O-Ring creatures are also not really what you want to be using as a Restoration Angel target beyond playing both at once. As basically you are returning what you've previously exiled only to exile it again in most scenarios. Something with JUST an ETB or JUST an LTB ability like Sun Titan would be much more appropriate for Restoration Angel .

Agreed on that front. Just wanted to highlight what it does for future reference
