The Lifemare Pastures (STD W/B Midrange)

Standard* Competitive Lifegain Midrange WB (Orzhov)

Booch138

Sideboard

Lifegain shenanigans deck featuring Crested Lifemare.

The deck starts off relatively active, hoping to get out a Sacred Kittttty/Glory-Bound Initiate/Sunscourge Champion out on curve as frequently as possible. Typically by turn three you're already at a solid 25 health even against the rushiest of stuff (read: 18 health against mono red :P). It should be noted that Authority of the Cancer and Kambal, Consul of Allocation should be played out as quickly as you get them. They're not the most life threatening by any means, but if your opponent neglects them, health adds up fast and BECOMES life-threatening very soon after. There are multiples simply for annoyance factor. If they stay on the board, or any lifelinky goodness, that makes your inevitable Sunmare breeding easy.

There's a smattering of various removal at play to help dismantle some annoyances to help you survive until you get a Sunmare out. There are other threats, though, as sometimes I will prioritize a Vona, Butcher of Magan out before a Funmare for two very specific reasons: it's a creature removal rod, and can bait out nasty stuff that would otherwise rid of your pasture of Sunmares. The other reason, obviously, is the Lifelink Factor and Vona's nasty other ability can really put your opponent in a tough spot.

Meanwhile you're waiting for the perfect opportunity to safely drop Crested Sunmare and it live just long enough to get a couple horsies out before your next turn (note, that as long as you heal on ANY turn, you get a horsie at the end of it). If you're up against a suspected inevitable Hour of Devastation wipe, just slap it with a Cartouche of Ambition and it's juuuuust out of reach.

Don't be afraid to play a little defensive. Mid-range as this deck may be, the patience factor and setting up the Sunmare pasture pays off INCREDIBLY quickly. Sunscourge and Sacred Kitty are sources of stickiness with their embalms. They are cheap and easy healthgain which = horsies. Angel of Sanctions provides incredibly good removal as well, and another sticky embalm card (and great target for a Cartouche as well, as flying is tougher to deal with) Ideally, you want to have Authority of the Consuls and Kambal on the board together as often as possible. This basically means that damn near anything your opponent does except exile the Sunmare, (Sheltering Light helps with cheap twitch indestructible, but Vraska has much contempt for horses), you're going to get a couple ticks of health and a brand new pony in the pasture.

Gonti, Lord of Luxury has been added due to a lot of fun stuff you can do should your opponent ever start searching for cards or filtering cards up top. Against control decks, this card is absolutely wonderful.

The last card to go over for the tech slot is Arguel's Blood Fast  . The card draw because of it is absolutely nuts. Even if I DO manage to get to 5 health, I never opt to flip it. 2 mana and 2 life for card draw helps immensely draw into the things you need when you have some extra unused mana. With all the lifegain in the deck, you're rarely short of life. Costly Plunder is added for card flow purposes, burying embalm targets for great value.

This is a work in progress. Sideboard is for various matchup counters that this deck has dealt with. But so far this has been a lot of fun to play and gets ridiculously out of hand very quickly.
