IXALAN READY SULTAI ENERGY/COUNTER DECK

Using some of my favorite cards in standard, my sultai energy brew is an absolute blast to play. Using the best of the best removal combined with the best creatures and the best draw spells, making for an interactive and complex deck to play. Performing well against pretty much all decks, including its counterpart Temur Energy, it is incredibly well-rounded with a response to pretty much everything.

Creatures

  • Winding Constrictor- the star of our show, the constrictor does everything we want, getting us more energy as well as more counters which is essential to our deck strategy
  • Glint-Sleeve Siphoner- an easy way to get through damage and energy, the siphoner holds its own as a 1-drop. Without being kept in check, the siphoner can give you huge card advantage in the long games and may even lead you to a closer.
  • Walking Ballista- one of the best cards in the deck, the ballista provides removal, burn, and damage in its own package. In addition, it has synergy with Ripjaw Raptor to get cards if you desperately need to.
  • Rishkar, Peema Renegade- turn three rishkar with constrictor is too dirty. Plus ramp to get up to your big guys? C'mon, so flippin good.
  • Bristling Hydra- a control deck's nightmare, a pain to kill. Simply an amazing card with energy and counters being bundled into one, two things our deck likes
  • Ripjaw Raptor- one of the best cards to come out of Ixalan, the raptor provides a big booty, provides card advantage, and discourages your opponent from attacking. You can even ping him with Walking Ballista if you get that desperate XD
  • Verdurous Gearhulk- one of our game closers, the gearhulk is simply so much value. Whether you want to make a 8/8 trampler or distribute counters to protect your board, the verdurous is too good not to run.
  • The Scarab God- wait what? Yup you read that right. We're running the main scarab man himself, in all his glory. I run this card for one two reasons: 1) This is trump card that no one sees coming. Seeing your opponent's eyes widen as they see you drop a scarab god feels SO GOOD! 2) It breaks board stalls. Being able to reanimate 4/4s very turn is just a great way to break board stalls, specifically against other decks.

Sorceries

  • Attune with Aether- mana fixing and early energy, not a whole lot to be said!
  • Never//Return - a great, flexible removal spell, Never helps us deal with pesky creatures and planeswalkers and can even act as a late-game mana sink to get you a 2/2 zombie.

Instants

  • Fatal Push- sigh, yes a playset. We'll have to see how standard progresses but I'm expecting lots of small pirates and mana dorks in the upcoming months so we'll have to hold on to the playset for now.
  • Glimmer of Genius- Glimmer is one of the main reasons I decided to continue using blue in my energy decks. The spell is simply too good of a card draw spell! NEVER underestimate the power of card advantage and glimmer is one of the best ways to achieve this.

Sideboard

  • Aethersphere Harvester- for decks with fliers as well as aggressive decks where we need the lifelink
  • Bristling Hydra- removal-heavy match-ups, including control and mirror matches
  • Confiscation Coup- whenever we see a creature that we like and feel like it should be ours >:)
  • Dispossess- panharmonicon decks, controld decks, god-pharaoh's gift, etc.
  • Doomfall- very good against control and gods as well as other indestructible stuff
  • Gonti, Lord of Luxury- mirror matches, or whenever we want to use someone's stuff for out bidding
  • Skysovereign, Consul Flagship- mainly to break mirror matches but also when removal or damage is needed
  • Spell Pierce- used for whenever we see some mean non-creature stuff
  • Vraska's Contempt- to deal with indestructible stuffs or pesky planeswakers
  • Yahenni's Expertise- I like killing stuff and getting free stuff :) mainly used for more aggressive, lower to the ground decks
