Dragons of Zendikar

Standard Control UBR (Grixis)

MrAni

My attempt at making a control deck. I used my old U/R dragon deck as a base, utilizing the new lands of BFZ. (Doesn't currently have a sideboard, suggestions welcome)

I used so many counter-spells and burn in my old deck, so some of them made the deck. I might take out some if I feel the need.

Ruinous Path - Not as good as Hero's Downfall with sorcery speed, but gets the job done. Considered the change to Ultimate Price but with Siege Rhino still in standard I feel this is just fine. The Awaken part isn't really needed, but in a pinch can make a difference.

Crux of Fate - A one sided board wipe? I don't think I need to explain more.

Scatter to the Winds - Sadly Dissolve rotated out, but we got another 3-mana counter with a possible benefit. Again, the Awaken part can make a difference. Especially with instant speed.

Silumgar's Scorn - I'm playing dragons, so a Counterspell feels like a good idea to have.

Brutal Expulsion - So this is one of the "try-out" cards. I can't really utilize the burn-n-exile part but since I'm expecting to see some planeswalkers I think this will come in good use. Also, bouncing a hard-to-handle creature to counter it next turn can be easily relevant.

Foul-Tongue Invocation - If I can't get rid of an opponents creature, I'll force them to do it themselves. The card has shown to be useful in control decks in the last Standard sets.

Draconic Roar - Not really a control card, but works as removal and possibly burn. It's cheaper than Foul-Tongue Invocation and can help when there are multiple creatures the opponent can sacrifice.

Again, my last deck influenced most of these cards and I'll tell why they're still in.

Icefall Regent - The first Dragon. It has helped me in many games before and I suspect it will do so in the future. Tapping the difficult creatures help tremendously. Also, the added to targeting is a plus.

Stormbreak Regent - I love the synergy all the Regents have. A 4-mana 4/4 is just great, with the added burn-bonus.

Dragonlord Ojutai - A surprise white splash to aid in cycling through the deck. Not to mention a 5/4 body with hexproof.

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy   - And last but not least, Jace. As everyone knows, he is a beast in any blue deck. Looting and Snapcaster Mageing are exactly what I need. Thought about having two but since I only have one, this is all I can do.

As I'm writing this, it seems most of these cards were in my old deck. All of these were used in it, maybe just not the same amount.

Dig Through Time - Sort of self-explanatory. Delving with fetchlands and counters makes it a easy way to find what is needed. Out of counters at a critical moment? There's a high chance one will be on the top seven.

Anticipate - Really good for a turn 2 deckcycler.

Dragonlord's Prerogative - Just what you need when you're out of cards. Also good if your opponent's playing control.

I'm not listing Jace again, just know that he's still in.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon - Another Dragon! The -X is a basic control trick, with an added burn to kick. I haven't really used the ultimate, but it's fine for drawing cards if nothing else. Also, as a side note; I wish Ugin was listed on the "Dragons matter" cards.

Ob Nixilis Reignited - He seems good. Haven't got to use him before but the abilities seem to fit the control scheme.

And lastly, the new lands. Took out the old nonbasics I had and switched them for the new battlelands and fetches to get them. Not really much to talk about land, except for these two:

Haven of the Spirit Dragon - A way to get colored mana for my dragon creatures (especially Dragonlord Ojutai) and to get them back when the need arises.

Prairie Stream - Only for Dragonlord Ojutai for now, but the idea for a sideboard tech Stasis Snare or Ojutai's Command.
