Adding Lightning Strike —Nov. 25, 2017

Will be experimenting with Lightning Strike x4 in place of Beneath the Sands x2 and Savage Stomp. There are still 2 Stomps in the sideboard against Ramunap Red or whatnot.

The removed cards are in the Maybeboard so feel free to board them in for playtesting if you want to try the original iteration.

How would one go about making this deck budget? I have already pulled most of the components from boosters and sealed boxes, all I need now is the 3x carnage tyrant, 1x deathgorge, 2x regisaurs, and 4x ripjaws. How important are the carnage tyrants in your opinion?

I tried a naya dino deck at my LGS and all i came up against was Approach and control and energy. I didn't have carnage tyrant or the unblockable cat. lost all my matches to removal and instant countering. Is there any way to reliably get around this or should i just abandon and switch to a blue deck?

Da5hcharl, Pygmyrhino990 its tough to be a competitive deck without Carnage Tyrant, as against control the best bet we have is try and get it out quickly. One thing to do would be to slow things down a turn and add in 4x Blossoming Defense so you can leave mana open to protect from removal. Once they see you're playing Defense, you can leave open a green mana to bluff you have one in hand, so try and keep a card in hand at all times. As for countermagic, without Tyrant you can use Prowling Serpopard but if you don't have that you can try and lower the curve to go wide. Try and get them to think you're going tall with creatures up the curve so they'll not "waste" counters on little 2 and 3 drops. Sky Terror is good early pressure that they won't likely counter, but there's always gonna be Censor that they're gonna try and use on early turns, so try and keep an eye on if the opponent has mana open. Ideally cast your important pieces only when they're tapped out (Regisaur Alpha for example). This may lead to turns when all you're doing is playing a land but eventually you'll have enough lands to drop some fatties. This is then where Carnage Tyrant is so clutch, as it provides some inevitability for the deck.

Perhaps use things like Raptor Hatchling to chip away at life total as they likely won't remove, counter or block it.

Blue is always tough to play against with a midrange deck, but if you have enough pressure on them it forces them to have to have the right cards at the right time or else they'll get worn away. Make them have to use 3-mana spells to kill your dinky guys and buy time to find a Tyrant. With the Communes, you don't need a playset. Even having 1 copy in the deck makes it far more competitive, as against control and Approach the games go long giving you time to find that one copy. It's down to like $24 currently.

Good points, I will give it more thought!

I think I might just wait it out for carnage tyrant and see where the price goes. At the moment the price seems to be on the decline since september when it was at its highest. Once it gets cheaper I might try and snag one for about $15 but that could take a while

Pygmyrhino990 in the meantime you could use Burning Sun's Avatar or Verdant Sun's Avatar

Pygmyrhino990, Da5hcharl ok I thought of an idea, haven't tested though: instead of Carnage Tyrant use Sunbird's Invocation. It triggers with Casting so even if your Regisaur Alpha gets countered, you can get a free upgraded Commune with Dinosaurs and maybe hit another one... could tax their removal, and not much mainboard enchantment hate out there lately. Problem is gonna be sticking it. Get them to tap out, maybe tempt with a Reggie, an Abrade on their God-Pharaoh's Gift or Walking Ballista and stick Invocation. Who knows, might not work at all, but def budget.

Hey really cool deck, I took some inspiration from your deck on working on my own Dino Deck. However Im curious on your reasoning for sideboarding single copies of planeswalkers? Im fairly new to the game so Im sorry if the answer is obvious.

Btw my deck is We're Back: A Dinosaur Deck if anyone wants to leave feedback

zachdig to be honest Im just kinda experimenting with them. I like having some non-creature threats game 2-3 in case they bring in more creature removal, and theyre particularly helpful in the mirror or grindier match ups. Something like Hour of Devastation to deal with Hazoret the Fervent and/or Puncturing Blow to handle The Scarab God might be better depending on your meta.

I really am a believer of Kinjalli's Caller very powerful (say it doesn't get Fatal Pushed. Really recommend trying 4x instead of say Drover of the Mighty or Ranging Raptors.

BEE_GEE I will have to experiment, I really like the idea of Caller on turn 1 for a 3-drop on turn 2, its just really weak to draw later in the game is my hesitation but will reconsider! Thanks for suggestion!

Have you thought about ramping up your mana with Gift of Paradise and New Horizons? Ixalan's Binding would be great for some of those big issues you face with hazoret and glorybringer. And anything else like that. Also a possibility for sideboard against energy decks, Solemnity.

Finally somebody that believes that Naya is best for dinos! I have had some people say I should go R/G but I think some of the most powerful dinosaurs are white. Goring Ceratops for example has been a major threat in my matches as the double strike ability really lets you deal some massive damage, and Otepec Huntmaster or regisaur alpha would let it attack immediately giving a quick opportunity to jump your opponent.
