Whatever I'm currently testing in paper will appear here, along with some justification.
MB 1x
Spellskite
: has good interactions against infect, burn, and amulet, in addition to taking it's usual kill spells. Also considering Selfless Spirit in the slot, which has utility in pressuring enemy PW's and blanking verdict/anger/conflagrate.
MB 3x
Postmortem Lunge
: I don't like this card, but it gives you outs where no other card can, and I'm in the combo business. My favorite metas are the ones where I don't need to run it.
SB 1x
Mirran Crusader
: I've tried Thrun, 2nd Shalai, Sigarda and Chameleon Colossus for this slot in the past. It gets cast on time, it can't be Oko'd, unblockable by elk, it's easy on the colors, and Shadow can't clear it. Haven't drawn it yet, but on paper, I think this is the #1 stunner. Also, exalted triggers are worth double.
I currently think counterspells for 2+ mana are a trap. You're diluting the most consistent t3 kill in modern for interaction that ties up mana, is conditional, and can be beaten at a discount. I've been happy with
Spell Pierce
in the past, but I don't like fetching for early blue when the rest of the deck is so hungry for green/white.
I'm high enough on my x-cost spells that Gaddock Teeg no longer makes my cut. You can't run him out willy nilly like you can with
Burrenton Forge-Tender
or
Collector Ouphe
, and I never liked babysitting him. He's a lightning rod for the removal that comes in for druid, then they kill you with whatever strategy you wanted him to prevent. The perfect list probably includes him, but he prevents me from testing the way I want.
