Experimenting with my Modern Boggles Deck to see if I can make it more legacy viable. Modern version already does pretty well against some legacy decks. Modern averaged about 1/3 win/loss against legacy decks, so I wanted to log some cards to test out in the deck that aren't available in modern.
In my opinion Aura Hexproof decks play very similar to hearthstone decks. Your creature(s) are your win condition and they grow very fast. It becomes a game of whether or not your opponent can keep up with you or get rid of your creature. When I first started theorizing with the Legacy transition I was having a very hard time finding Legacy specific auras or hexproof creatures to add. There are a few (Ancestral Mask,
Unstable Mutation
) but nothing that made me think, "Holy crap, thats amazing!" So, I lost interest for a while...
Recently I've been playing a wider variety of both modern and legacy decks and it has influenced me to look deeper into a Legacy viable Aura Hexproof deck. It's very close to being viable in its modern form, what more could be done if the legacy auras and hex-proofs were nothing special? Going back to the decks relation to hearthstone strategies, I realized that this could work really well with some ramp; but the ramp couldn't slow down the deck it would have to be like a druid's ramp from Hearthstone which is just zero cost cards that increase your mana pool for that turn. Lotus Petal does this in a similar fashion, and with the fact that most spells in this deck cost 1 resource, this could work amazingly. Allowing turn two daybreaks, or being able to totem armor up a Kor Spiritdancer on turn 2; resulting in a draw to replace the Lotus Petal and a Kor that is protected from kill spells right away.
This is what Aura Hexproof needed, not better auras and hexproofs, but a new gimmick that plays into the old strategy. One of the main thing that seperates Legacy from modern is good "Free" spells that require no land dependence to cast. Force of Will has no place in this deck, but perhaps Invigorate can be utilized. I would love any suggestions for legacy cards that would make a good addition in Aura Hexproof, the only requirement for these additions is that it doesn't slow the deck down. For example
Noble Hierarch
, while good at ramping, is not worth using when you could instead be dropping a hexproof creature with a lower chance to be countered on turn 1.
Notes:
-Most of the current auras hold too much value to replace for merely buff auras, so perhaps moving paths to the sideboard all together would be worth it. Obviously some decks you will NEED some form of removal, but the idea is to go fast anyways, so maybe they simply will never get that Platinum Angel or other out.
-City of Brass is an addition purely to add a little flexibility for auras like
Unstable Mutation
.
-Currently my thoughts are just to add lotus petals in place of 2 lands and 2 auras, and simply seeing what this does... I'll update this once I've tried that, and maybe
Unstable Mutation
will be added for that extra speed. I can't see Ancestral Mask working well with this deck though, especially since I'm going a speedy route with it.
Thanks for any suggestions, and sorry if I misunderstand how a certain card works, I'm still not familiar with a lot of Legacy cards.
