Unstable Mutation

Enchantment — Aura

Enchant creature

Enchanted creature gets +3/+3.

At the beginning of the upkeep of enchanted creature's controller, put a -1/-1 counter on that creature.

I’ve always wanted to use Unstable Mutation in an aggressive way on other players... maybe this is where you could try that out? It’s a pretty steep challenge, but I think it would be hilarious. Maybe trapping creatures in conjunction with Meekstone so you don’t get hit as much..?

Some thoughts:

  • i think your current creature selection require far too much mana to be useful. Ideally in a prowess deck you want to be as-low-to-the-ground as possible, so you can apply pressure early and secure a fast win. I’d suggest ditching all your creatures that cost 3-or-more mana. Replacements to consider include Monastery Swiftspear, Soul-Scar Mage and Sprite Dragon. If you’re able to afford Manamorphose, then Stormwing Entity becomes a good pick also. You probably only want your creature count to be around 18-19.

  • I don’t know why Unstable Mutation is here.

  • For some more useful spells, i’d suggest Gut Shot, Lava Dart, Lightning Bolt, and Mutagenic Growth. I’d advise on not using cards like Counterspell, as they generally don’t help your creatures get anywhere useful (its a potential sideboard card).

Not an expert on U/W spirits but I can give a few suggestions

Mausoleum Wanderer in the side board at least can really help against certain matchups

If you would like, you can go the Tallowisp route, with auras like Steel of the Godhead. This strategy works really well with Geist of Saint Traft, as a 4/4 unblockable lifelinking beater that makes 4/4 angels is pretty good. If you do go this route, I also suggest Hyena Umbra and Unstable Mutation, offering protection and brute force respectively.

Also Rattlechains can work well if you like

I love Pithing Needle in the sideboard, but I think that Crystallization can be cut, I think you have enough removal/ counters so you can keep the board mostly clear. Throw in some yard hate.

not sure about Norn's Annex in the side board, maybe more removal or possibly Supreme Verdict in that spot. In my eyes you'd play annex against a fast creature deck, turn 5 is too late and turn 3 plus 4 life seems pretty steep as well. Spirits have always struggled from trying to control, but also being aggressive by nature. Again I'm not sure hoe the meta works with this card, as I am not actively playing modern, but it just seems strange to me.

This is 100 percent up to you but if you feel you easily get a snow land out for On Thin Ice, then you can throw in Minamo, School at Water's Edge /Celestial Colonnade / Eiganjo Castle

Other than that I really like the deck 10/10 name btw lmao let me know If I need to clarify anything or if you need any more help!

Hey! Turned out I made a similar deck myself. I realised I could not have a lot of disrupt spells so I focused it all on aggro though. I only have 1 counterspell and no dual lands (cause they come into play tapped). Here are a few budget cards I would definitely include if I were you: Healer's Hawk , Unstable Mutation , Vapor Snag and Kaya's Onslaught . I personally don't really like Winged Words even if it has senergy in a flying deck!

Now I’m just thinking about Unstable Mutation and when we’re going to get more blue -1/-1 counters ;p (I love that card, by the way)

Blue is the transformative color. Given the Clone family of cards and things like Unstable Mutation . Polymorph is one of the most powerful transformation cards you can play. Blue is also, mostly, the only color that can easily change creature types of unwilling targets.

I agree about these cards being closer to Simic than mono Blue nowadays but Pongify and Rapid Hybridization are perfect examples of how a Blue mage could negate or remove a threat that has legs.

Maybe they should have been 2 color spells in line with things like Abrupt Decay and Anguished Unmaking ?

Have you considered leaning a bit more into Rogues? They have a really nice lords (Stinkdrinker Bandit/Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive/Sygg, River Cutthroat) and some nice equipment (Cloak and Dagger). Unstable Mutation is a better alternative to Unholy Strength. Even though it will eventually kill your creature you can sneak in up to 10 damage with a 1 power unblockable creature before that happens. Hope this helps.

If a creature with either a +1/+1, or a -1/-1 counter on it, receives one of the opposite counters. Both will be removed entirely.

This means Unstable Mutation type effects are somewhat counterproductive with Ordeals.

I don't know if that's what you're going for. And you just want to use the ordeals to prevent your creatures from getting -1/-1 counters. But I feel that's pretty underpowered, intentional or not.
