It would just be awful if I played a Back to Nature

I have a similar Deck or I should say had. I took this deck to FNM last week and wrecked it. I did go 4-0, but and Back to Nature will destroy you. Last FNM I won most of my game ones. Games two's were different. If they ran green, which 3 out of the 4 did. They boarded Back to Nature . Let me tell you if they drew it. I lost the game hands down. That card just eats the deck alive. I had to get lucky they didn't draw it in games 3. I love Eidolon of Blossoms card advantage all day. You need to make the deck have other win conditions and not make yourself so venerable to Back to Nature I would suggest taking out some enchantments like Brain Maggot and Doomwake Giant and add some more walkers. Like Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Vraska the Unseen . Make it more control. Just some suggestions though. I have a deck up that is just like this, if you want to check it out!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like this deck to survive rotation so Vraska, while good, isn't an option. Elspeth on the other hand is something I've been avoiding adding simply because the card costs so much (in dollars, not mana). I think I may just have to cave and pick up a couple copies.

Back to Nature is definitely a real concern. Thankfully right now I don't think Enchantment-style decks are prevalent enough for players in general to sideboard Back to Nature, but I've been thinking of ways around this. I'm looking for some ways to sideboard against Back to Nature, feel free to recommend cards!

Thanks again.

Seeing as you're in black, i would say add a Stain the Mind or two to the sideboard to hit those pesky Back to Nature and any other threat that may float around. Another good idea would be to pick up some Thoughtseize , yes it is pricey but it is the same with it as it is elspeth, you really can't afford NOT to have it in your deck, especially with how much of a control deck this seems to be

Trust me Piper they are out there, Almost every green deck will have them. Think about all the cards that are being ran right now that aren't in an "enchantment deck". There is Banishing Light and Detention Sphere . IN UW Control. In any Green, I am any green deck they are going to run "Courser of Kruphix" Mono Black Runs Underworld Connections . The value of Back to Nature is a two cost, instant speed, kill card that can wreck multiple cards.Against you it's a game winner! I'm sorry, but enchantments are dead. lol

Then only problem with this archetype is that there are no repeatable sources of constellation. Heliod is too expensive, and mana bloom is rotating out. So, enchantments are meh at the moment.

It is a good base though, wait for Khans.

ThePiper42 says... #10

I think Khans will change a lot of what this deck does. I'm not worried about repeatable triggers, though. If you trigger Eidolon of Blossoms even twice you've already built a large card advantage simply by playing cards that already benefit you by themselves.

Ok I played junk constellations a lot when it sort of first came onto the scene and I love the deck. First of all Doomwake Giant is easily one of this decks best cards and to cut it is absolutely unthinkable. (unless khans has something better) Second, I can literally think of no reason whatsoever to not be playing Thoughtseize . Turn 1 Thoughtseize turn 2 Brain Maggot can often give you a huge advantage in the early game, which is very important for a deck with so much synergy and that needs a few turns and cards to get moving.

I am not really sure what Whip of Erebos does in this deck... you would really only want to whip Doomwake Giant and that seems very conditional. I also think a one-of Pharika, God of Affliction is a must for a deck like this. When she comes down she triggers constellation and she is relatively easy to get active, and I hope I don't need to tell you her snakes are enchantments. Really like the deck, I guess we will all see how/what Khans of Tarkir does for this deck. Cheers!

Cut down to 24 land with your Caryatids, ditch your Extinguish All Hope and throw in 4 Thoughtseize .If you are playing black, you are doing yourself a disservice by not running the best card in standard.

or 25 land -1 Banishing Light

incenerate says... #13

Why Nissa? 2 out of 3 of her abilities don't really help you much. Yes you have a free 4/4 but you can only untap forests and ult for basic land, which is only 4 forest in the numbers you have posted.

Id say drop the Nissas for 1 main board utter end and another downfall. Utter End in my opinion is to good of a resource to have at your disposal and the third downfall will improve your consistency to draw the spot removal this deck needs in most match ups.

ThePiper42 says... #14

I'm interested to hear what else there is to say about Nissa, Worldwaker . I feel that she's good with her first ability alone, but she may be underwhelming in this deck. I'm not convinced of Utter End though... in playtesting this deck usually loses because it doesn't have CHEAP removal.

Thanks for the input!

Doomwake giant is control.. -1/-1 to all opponents creatures. That fucks so many people up.

...and it should be good against many of the anticipated aggro decks to come after the Khans release.

September 17, 2014 11:45 p.m.

I would suggest taking out the Sandstepe Citaldels and jungle hollows to run 3 windswept hearths and 3 plains this will help fix the mana as well as lower the number of cards in your deck. Another suggestion would to be also take out both Doomwake Giants as they are hard to get out and are slow to do what they are intended to do (clear opponent's fields) and replace with a Ajani, Mentor of Hero's and a Liliana. The Ajani will help filter your deck and Lily will get a card for you as well as help against the mirror match or a similar control vs. control match.

4c Enchanticore

i ran a constellation deck for a minute thru the Journey into Nyx set. It was super fun to play, trying to maximize the synergies.

Don't listen to anyone telling you to replace Doomwake Giant . It's pretty critical to your strategy. You are also wrong for not running Pharika, God of Affliction , you can activate it's ability on your opponents turn, making their attacks bad. That's why Fated Intervention is so good in this deck. Yes it's a horrible card in any other deck, but in this deck getting 2 constellation triggers at instant speed is really good. It's also why people didn't understand how good Underworld Coinsmith is in the deck either, until i drained their life when we came to a board stall.

There are alot of critical pieces missing now from rotation, believe it or not Mana Bloom rotating hurts the deck alot... Having cheap enchantments that you can play over and over for more value....

But anyways that was the past. Now you have cards like Abzan Ascendancy . Which is super good, because the abilities stack. In other words if you play two of them you get 2 spirits. M15 brought you Spirit Bonds , hmmmm i can has indestructible? There are a handful of newer enchantments that i would be willing to try in this deck other than the ones i just mentioned. Debilitating Injury seems good. It's cheap, triggers constellation and it doesn't matter if it doesn't kill the threat outright in many cases... i think Sorin, Solemn Visitor is a better fit in a deck like this over Garruk, Apex Predator , especially if you are getting little spirit dudes. Spectra Ward has got to be considered... Chord of Calling would be good in this deck as well, again with spirits and little Elspeth dudes enabling better convoke.

Hopefully you get the deck dialed and have as much fun playing it as i did.

Cheers!

I think I have cracked the code on Abzan Constellation. The key was a Siege Rhino and a metagame shift from the current one:

Junkstellation - Gameday ed.

Running less than 4 banishing light, thoughtseize and brain maggot seems like a terrible idea. Unless the meta shifts to pure aggro, 1 doomwake + 1 chord is plenty as an additional threat. I originally had Elspeth as a win con, but the current meta is against that - Empty the Pits is much more inevitable win condition.

Not sure if i commented here before, i've picked back up a Constellation deck again myself. Again running 4C. The problems i had and i see you having is anyone playing red. Particularly Stormbreath Dragon . It's good that Lifebane Zombie is gone, but if you don't Thoughtsieze it, or have the correct removal you just die.

i like Garruk, Apex Predator in the deck, and for straight Abzan (Junk Constellation) i like the Extinguish All Hope . i think your matchup against other Abzan decks is really strong. But i feel you probably are disadvantaged against Jeskai, and probably just lose to any deck with a playset of Stormbreath.

What i did by going blue is adding flexibility by playing cards like Clever Impersonator which is the most flexible card in Standard right now. It's like having addition numbers of any card in my deck or copy your Garruk for 4 mana... Sultai Charm is a poor man's Utter End but i can hit Stormbreath...
And Dig Through Time ...

So ideas and cards i've been playing with that you can use in your deck... i would say Abzan Ascendancy is a good card and worth having in the sideboard, particularly if more wrath effects start showing up. Getting a spirit off of a creature is value, the counters are gravy. Sorin, Solemn Visitor should be in your deck. Now more than ever lifegain is so important in Standard. And finally a card that i'm working with and seems good in the current meta Debilitating Injury . i'm running 3 Doomwake Giant 2 Clever Impersonator and 4 of the Injury. There are so many good targets for the card, it kills Goblin Rabblemaster Eidolon of Blossoms it makes other cards wimps, and if used in conjunction with Doomwakes it can kill Gods...

Good luck!

I've been hearing Elspeth is underpowered... will continue to think on it. Might replace her with Wingmate Roc . Thanks for the input--how do you balance your mana in a 4-color deck? Do you have a link to the deck you're running?

October 21, 2014 8:37 p.m.

sk00kes says... #22

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/4c-constellation/4C. The mana base is pretty solid, between the Caryatid and the Courser there is plenty of fixing. Tri-color land both with green which is the base. Tapped when entering isn't great, but you are always happy to have a tri-land or two in your opening hand.

I really suggest playing a different deck as way too many other decks are mainboard Hushwing Gryff and most are sideboard Back to Nature sorry man! :(

I haven't seen a single competitive standard deck running Hushwing Gryff.
