Throne of Elrdaine and Other Updates —Nov. 17, 2019

Hello everyone! Firstly I'd like to give a huge thank you to everyone who's commented and upvoted. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated even if I've already tested them before or cut them previously. I'm known to go back on old cuts, and I'm always willing to reconsider a card or stand by my old reasonings, whatever the case may be. On top of that, just because I don't run a suggestion or card in my list doesn't mean you can't run it in yours! If you like a card, play it! Almost any card can be justified in this format, so do what you think feels right/good. Lastly, the upvotes and kind words make me feel like I've done something worthwhile, so thank you again :)

Onto the changelog!

Throne of Eldraine produced a whopping one card that I even considered putting in here. I have double and triple checked Scryfall many times since it's release, and I continue to find nothing of value for my version of Feather outside of Fabled Passage.

New Additions:

  • Chandra, Torch of Defiance - this card is mostly in here as a backup win condition; I'm a strong proponent that one should never play a planeswalker just for the ultimate/emblem, but that -7 is just game winning, and the other modes aren't terrible for what they're worth
  • Livewire Lash - this is Labyrinth Champion's spiritual predecessor, however the ability to slap that ability onto another heroic creatures pushes Livewire Lash just a few marks above Champion for me
  • Mox Tantalite - still not 100% on this choice, as Chrome Mox may just be strictly better in most cases; for me, however, I don't want Chrome Mox in the early game as I need those resources I would exile to Chrome Mox to push me into the mid game
  • Arcane Signet - I mean why not, it's better Fellwar Stone
  • Past in Flames - my recursion spell of choice, as it's flexible, can be used twice, and isn't restrictive like Finale of Promise or Dreadhorde Arcanist; also gets around Teferi, Time Raveler unlike the aforementioned
  • Angel's Grace - this card is mostly in here to buy an extra turn to win with when your back is against the wall; it's probably not worth running, in reality, but many times this deck just needs one more main phase to finish off a pod, and this will get you that if nothing else
  • Zada, Hedron Grinder and Mirrorwing Dragon - I cut these a long time ago, and I stand by my reasons for cutting them; that said, I think the cards are just too powerful not to play in this deck, and while I'm not especially fond of them, I see them as a necessary evil
  • Inventors' Fair - this is a fine tutor that will fetch two of the three main win conditions and doesn't take up a spell slot; can also gain marginal life and works nicely with Boros signet to help outweigh the downside of making colorless mana
  • Fabled Passage - better Evolving Wilds is good; helps thin, doesn't require me to pay life, and doesn't come in tapped (most of the time)

The One's Left Behind

  • Oblation - I think the card is fine, but I'd honestly rather play nothing than Oblation; it's fairly costed and balanced, but two cards in commander is worth a lot more than two cards in other formats
  • Fall of the Hammer - the worst removal spell, got replaced by Declaration in Stone; still a fine card if you'd rather play this over something else
  • Titan's Strength and Samut's Sprint - thses are fine cards, but scry vs draw is a big downgrade, and the power boost is rarely relevant outside of Zada/Mirrorwing, Krenko, or commander damage kills
  • Finale of Devastation and Dreadhorde Arcanist - these are fine cards, but they're too restrictive for me to warrant playing, and for what it's worth they both fail to even function when a Teferi, Time Raveler is in play
  • Fellwar Stone - bad rock is bad
  • Akroan Conscriptor - I hyped this card up for a long time, and it was a tough cut; that being said, it is one of the worst heroic creatures because of converted mana cost and only being phenomenal with either Cloudshift or Phyrexian Altar
  • Mana Confluence - bad pain land is bad; wouldn't recommend this or City of Brass for any two color deck
  • Plains - not going to cut any of the other lands, and I have enough basics to go around and then some

Eyran - I cut Guttersnipe because it's too narrow and didn't do enough for me

Frewsax - Chandra's Ignition is good, but I don't personally like it so I'm not running it; I definitely see it's use, though; Formation is a really bad cantrip at 2 cmc and banding is not quite where I think I need to be with combat; Djeru's resolve is certainly good, but preventing damage is never going to match up with real protection or indestructibility

Modern Horizons update is here! Primer is getting updated as well as the Changelog, even if the list doesn't 100% reflect the new changes yet because of cards not being put in the database yet.

Djeru's Resolve because it untaps your commander or other creatures so you can still block. Formation was a joke, but banding is actually really useful on defense for sure.

Have you tested Veilstone amulet? seems like it would give your board some extra protection. Also can Oblation also work as a draw engine for yourself by targeting tokens?

Any reason for using the Fellwar Stone and not just putting an Exotic Orchard in?

Frewsax - Djeru's Resolve has uses for sure, I just don't personally like it.

HenryVape - I actually just cut Veilstone Amulet but haven't had time to update the changelog yet. Also yes, Oblation can be used on tokens as a double cantrip for three mana

jkpz28 - Mana Rocks > more lands

Do you think Fountain Watch would be a good addition? Several wincons among your artifacts and enchantments, and Fountain Watch is a lot easier to keep alive given all the protection/indestructible effects.

Hey bud, love this deck. I made one based almost entirely on it, just subbing in a few cards I had for ones I didn't. One that worked well for me in a game yesterday was Gideon's Sacrifice . Was playing against a Gishath and it was awesome to redirect all his damage to a token each turn.

Durdle_Turtle89 - Fountain Watch is neat, but paying 5 mana to do nothing but protect 15/99 cards in my deck (which granted are mostly win conditions) isn't that worth it because I generally get enough use out of them the turn I play them to make it worth it, or I overload my opponents removal to the point where they can't answer everything

Ruggs - Glad you like the deck! Unfortunately Gideon's Sacrifice doesn't target, so you can't get it back with Feather, but it is certainly a powerful one-time fog for a turn; as a mini Teferi's Protection I like it a lot

Nice list! Out of curiosity is the Pyroblast just used to provide some defense for a critical spell from being countered?

June 30, 2019 11:59 p.m.

Control_Train says... #10

KMart - Yep! Pyro is there as a defensive measure against blue decks, and you can get it back to your hand with Dreadhorde Arcanist if necessary without destroying anything of your own.

Awesome primer! As I've been going through Feather decks for ideas I've been noticing a lot of interesting repeats (they all have Teferi's Protection despite it only working once? How odd) now I understand why.

Just want to add my two cents here on a different direction you can go. Arcane spells - feather sees spliced spells as targeting even if the original spell does not, and it's a great way to get extra effects in there.

For instance Zada, Hedron Grinder + Desperate Ritual spliced onto something that targets. Makes insane amounts of mana.

Crack the Earth + Spiritual Visit + a targeting arcane spell, say Blessed Breath + Zada or Mirrorwing Dragon = annihilator x where x is the number of creatures you control, for 3 mana.

I haven't completely tuned it yet, but just want to throw out some alternative ideas if people want to take a look.

Curious if you have thoughts on taking out a plain or mountain for a reliquary tower or adding a spellbook to deal with hand size. I find with my feather deck that I'm constantly discarding to hand size.

Great deck though found a couple ideas to boost mine a bit.

Glad you liked the deck and thanks for the positive feedback! I would Play Reliquary Tower but I absolutely cannot afford the colorless land. I need 4 colored mana on turn 4 to play Feather and hold up protection. Spellbook is a consideration but it doesn’t do anything other than turn on Mox Opal. For that reason I’ve had a hard time justifying it and if I can’t find more than one cantrip early I can’t abuse it. I’m heavily sceptical on even Thought Vessel.

As far as the Arcane idea, I really love the concept. I’ll check out your list as soon as I’ve got more free time. I didn’t go with it because there isn’t enough support for it to give the consistency for me, and I was hoping for some support in MH1 for splice, but that never came to fruition.

In advance, im not english raised so there will be some/alot of typos.

I was playing edh today with this deck and a player got really salty with me because in his head i played wrong, so id like to explain them here and see if i played them right.

1st thing: Played a boardwipe, blasphemous act. When no1 countered it and every1 said ok i said in responce ill made my commander indestructable with a 1 plains instant.

2nd thing: Other player then mr salty tried to destroy 3 non creature cards with that 9/9 green creature that gives you a 3/3 elephant. He targetted my aria of flame with 5 counters on it. Then something of another opponent, that player picked up a token and put his card in gj. Then thought for 5-10 seconds and said he didnt wanna target another target. I said in responce ill play 3 instants and it turned out to be enouf damage from aria to kill the 9/9 creature playing owner so the other player had to put his card back from gj.

These were both in the same game in witch i was going pretty well, drawing the right answers and ended up winning the last game of the night (after losing 4 games).

He got real salty after it saying that he didnt like me and after asking him he said it was because of above 2 examples. He said because the other player already put his card in his gj, i was to late to respond to it (he said that after the game, not during) And we didnt discuss the first example because i didnt wanna escalate it further and just appoligized saying that ive been playing for half a year now and still make mistakes and it was my second fnm playing this deck.

I know every1 gets salty every now and then and its rough if certain cards you play dont get any value while others do. But my deck was mostly derping around the other games while he was pretty strong.

I can understand he doesnt like playing agianst this deck cause it has alot of answers on target destroy cards and some other effects, but it wasnt happening the preveous games, plus hes playing a ninjiutsu deck where he was burning every1 for up to 13 damage some turns so i didnt interfere with his plan at all night.

Built this list. Loving it!

Helnas For your first question) Based on my understanding of the stack I believe that you could not cast the indestructibility spell after all of your opponents pass priority. When you cast blasphemous act you gain priority (meaning you can cast instants and activate abilities). If you take no action you then pass priority to the next player. This process goes around the table until either 1) nobody responds: or 2) another player casts a spell. This means that after your last opponent passes priority, the blasphemous act would resolve without an additional chance for you to respond. (hopefully this helps, I don't claim to fully understand the stack myself as it can be rather confusing)

For the second question) This one is a bit more simple. When Terastodon enters the battlefield its controller chooses (up to) 3 targets. All three targets are chosen at once and all three targets are destroyed at once. This means that once you have priority you can cast instants at will. After everyone has passed priority then each of the targets would go to the graveyard. However, killing the creature would not stop the ability from happening. Once the creature enters the battlefield the ability will resolve (excepting corner cases like Stifle )

Hope this Helps!

Primer should be completely updated! Sorry that it took three months to update completely :/

A small note for PewPew and Helnas; once the Terastodon resolves, you will get priority again after it resolves when the ability is placed on the stack with all targets announced. So you can (and should) wait for it to resolve to decide what you're going to try and protect.

Really close to 200 upvotes, thanks to everyone who's upvoted and/or commented. I'm glad so many people seem to like Feather!

Have you considered Allay and Shattering Pulse for this deck? Depending on how much artifacts and enchantments are a nuisance in your meta the buyback ability could be worth the extra mana. I know they are in my meta. They put in their work in my feather deck.

Control_Train says... #20

KayneMarco - these seem like fine cards if they're doing well for you; my personal hold up against them is they're a bit expensive. Paying five mana for only half of Wear/Tear versus just playing Wear/Tear or something similar doesn't seem sustainable to me, but like I said if they're working for you then that's great.

If I were going to use a card like this, I'd personally use Orim's Thunder because it can hit either type of target and costs 1 less overall, but in my testing that was too slow and too hard to hold up effectively. My meta is also flush with spot removal for all types of permanents, so my experience (and low first impression of Allay and Pulse) may be a symptom of that. Thanks for the comment and suggestion!

I have been fallowing you for a while and have been keeping updated with your posts for a while. I have to say i love your build. I have almost the same build by now because i love to more focuse on going wide if you need to.

Some notable changes i have made was: -1 accelerate +1 heal (a delayed bandige is good for 1 also helps with erly hand size), - 1 thought vesal +1 crome mox (faster mana and if i was gonna discard anyway i might as well get fast mana also 1 max hand size card isnt worth it when you can cantrip during you end step to have a fake hand size till your oponits turn), - finale of promise +1 archangel avacyn (finale was honestly underwelming and i had hard time with wide boards. This gave me a way to block really well or avoide a board wipe all together. Then flip to ither make the token player cry or wipe some small dudes just to cloud shifter her back to reuse the indestructible again and set up for another board wipe)

Like I said I'm a really huge fan and want to know what you think about some of the choices I had made as well. Thank you so much

Love the deck.

How would you rate Declaration in Stone ? Is it a godsend, a ‘eh’ card or is it on it’s way out?

Primarily, Do you use it mostly as a kill spell on an individual enemy creature, Do you mind mass killing enemy tokens or do you use on your own tokens for all the investigate tokens?
