Permeating Mass and Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder Interaction?

I need some help with this particular interaction. If I am attacked by Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder and block with my Permeating Mass , since blockers assign damage first (the the Mass "deals combat damage), does Yidris become a copy of Permeating Mass before he assigns damage? I am trying to determine exactly when Yidris would become a copy and if his trample & triggered ability would still resolve? I hope this makes sense and thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help......that make sense. I guess its still a pretty good way to humble Yidris a bit for future turns......

First, assigning damage is different than dealing damage. Assigning damage is when you declare how the damage between the creature will be dealt.
From a Rules stance, you are incorrect that blockers assign damage first - attackers do (Rule 510.1 and subparts).
At the time Yidris assigns damage, it still has trample, so it can assign 3 damage to the Mass, and 2 to the defending player.
Once both attackers and blockers assign damage, both attackers and blockers deal their damage simultaneously with one another (Rule 510.2). The Mass will deal 1 damage to Yidris at the same time Yidris deals 3 damage to the mass and 2 to the defending player.
Both Yidris and Mass will trigger their abilities upon assignment of damage. Yidris’ ability goes on the stack first, since Yidris is controlled by the Active Player. Mass goes on the stack second. Mass will die as a state-based action after damage is dealt, but the fact that it dies does not remove its trigger from the stack.
Since Mass was second on the stack, it resolves first. This is when Yidris becomes a copy of Mass. however, it’s becoming a copy of Mass does not remove Yidris’ trigger from the stack, so that will still resolve and its controller’s spells will get cascade that turn.
