Mask of Avacyn

Artifact — Equipment

Equipped creature gets +1/+2 and has hexproof. (It can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.)

Equip (: Attach this to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)

I mean, Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves seem obvious. Next best things are Whispersilk Cloak and maybe Mask of Avacyn. Kaya's Ghostform and similar cards might work as well.

+1 from me. Very interesting deck and idea.

My only puzzlement comes from not seeing many ways to protect your commander. I figured I'd see stuff like Mask of Avacyn and Diplomatic Immunity all over the place.

I'm new to Commander, though, so I might be missing something.

What's your plan for when the Doomblades start flying?

This is pretty nice. I'd add a bit more protection for Imodane though, as he's pretty vulnerable and will likely be a primary target. Some more equipment perhaps (Darksteel Plate, Mask of Avacyn, Champion's Helm), some cards that prevent (blue) players from countering him when he appears (Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast) or maybe some cards that mess with opponents' mana bases when they try something against him (or you). I'm thinking Price of Glory, Tectonic Instability and War's Toll.

It's not just trying to make a budget deck work.

If you're like me and have a thing for more out there commanders (think Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant  Flip or Ben-Ben, Akki Hermit), then you need to work harder in the 99 to bring the deck up to parity since you're trying to get theme with less card support than Big stompy Jodah, the Unifier has.

Continuing in terms of card support, there are many effects that can protect a creature. Swiftfoot Boots gets reprinted every 5 minutes while Lightning Greaves is an extra effect in the same vein. Mask of Avacyn, Whispersilk Cloak, Neurok Stealthsuit and Mirror Shield all fill a very similar role. You can get 4 of those equipments to protect your commander for under a dollar each. On the flip side, an effect like Pariah's Shield exists on very few cards (I only know of Pariah as a similar effect) so outside of a white colour identity, you've got to use one card for that idea which was printed nearly 20 years ago and has never (The list is so diverse it basically doesn't count) been reprinted.

Pariah's shield isn't a bankbreaking card, but the scarcity of similar effects shows how even the most creative budget player is stuck away from creative/interesting strategies when their brew needs a specific piece which will cause problems in their budget.

RiotRunner789 on Hexproof in Mono White?

There are a ton of instants that grant hexproof but no white enchantments.

You have a few other equipment though, Champion's Helm, Mask of Avacyn, and Mirror Shield.

Have you considered Mask of Avacyn as a budget Lightning Greaves?

Hexproof is fun (:

Howdy! I have some recommendations!

  • Umbral Mantle can give you an infinite/infinite if you equip it to a myr, or just give you a lot of untaps. Not that you can't do that already, but this gives you an extra +2/+2.

  • Oblivion Stone is an excellent board-wipe. Drop it turn four and slowly but surely just mark everything that's yours. And you could use it as a negotiation tool. "If you murder his commander, I'll keep that combo piece of yours safe."

  • Well of Knowledge reads weird, but it's basically saying "(2): Draw a card. Any player may play this ability but only during his or her draw step." It'll be good for everyone, but better for you.

  • Mirrorpool is just good utility.

  • Thaumatic Compass  Flip is good ramp and lets you just say "Actually, no, that creature isn't attacking."

  • Luminarch Ascension is going to give you as many white angels as your heart can handle.

  • Illusionist's Bracers is just going to double whatever fuckery you're up to.

  • Mask of Avacyn, Lightning Greaves, and Swiftfoot Boots are all excellent protection for your boy.
