I have modern affinity, so I'll probably have the cards to convert it for when I want to play Pioneer. Really nostalgic for me because its beginning was just when I started playing. A bot worried about Deathrite Shaman , Treasure Cruise , and Dig Through Time though.

Neither Dig Through Time nor Treasure Cruise are banned in the format. Make of that what you will.

Edit: Ninja’d!

TypicalTimmy I thought that wizards only sold sealed product not signals, but yeah unless my lgs starts doing this as a consistent event that fires every week on a day where there isn't already magic and I see a fun deck do well in a big tournament then I will probably just stick with playing eldrazi tron in modern forever. NEVER BAN CHALICE WIZARDS I WILL CRY! I do want to make Arclight Phoenix and Thing in the Ice  Flip work though. MoonHollow124 I don't think Deathrite Shaman will be an issue without fetches.

I suppose the rock will be decent with Deathrite Shaman

TypicalTimmy while I'm sure that is mostly what they are trying to do, I do feel that they are trying to make eternal formats more cost friendly to get into. With Shocks being the most expensive lands, flat out banning the fetches that already drive up the cost modern, this doesn't seem to bad. Worth looking into, and in about 16 years or so, they'll add another new format.

October 21, 2019 12:46 p.m.

SpiderJuan says... #7

Jeskai Ascendancy could also be pretty insane, what with Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time legal.

October 21, 2019 12:55 p.m.

I wish it had innistrad. Delver of secrets, snapcaster mage, and thought scour would make the format much more appealing to me.

That said, UR Prowess / Phoenix seems really good. Monastery Swiftspear , Arclight Phoenix , Treasure Cruise , Opt , and anything goes to dump things into the graveyard. Cathartic Reunion seems good.

Poor blue decks. Blue seems so bad as a primary color in this format. It seems fine for support and that's about it. It gets you Supreme Verdict and treasure cruise.

Absolutely BG Rock, since this is the only format where I can run 4x DRS haha

October 21, 2019 1:50 p.m.

scrotality but no fetchlands. It's hard to tap drs for mana.

I wonder if every deck will default to using Smuggler's Copter again. Also Siege Rhino is back, which will probably reclaim it's status of boogeyman of the format.

I'm kind of bummed that M13 isn't included. I can understand why Innistrad block is not included, but I really-really want to use Vampire Nighthawk in this format. I guess Thundermaw Hellkite and Thragtusk are to blame.

October 21, 2019 4:52 p.m.

Rabid_Wombat says... #13

And now that Modern's card pool is this large, it no longer serves the needed role of "format where we can make as much money as possible."

;)

berryjon says... #14

Man, what a really weird way to spell Extended. 7 years of cards, almost to the day. If only it rotated....

Pass on the format. Like I have with Historic and Frontier.

Also, Frontier and Pioneer? That's certainly a way to wear your origin on your sleeves.

October 21, 2019 8:19 p.m.

Boza says... #15

As long as Pioneer has saheeli rai and Felidar Guardian both legal, I refuse to play the format. I think this is by far the most obnoxious thing you can do in the format.

October 22, 2019 9:43 a.m.

berryjon says... #16

Actually, I'm going to jump on the WU Approach deck as something to watch out for. This is a format that has Approach of the Second Sun , Dig Through Time , Supreme Verdict and Sphinx's Revelation in it. It's a monstrous Control deck that has a lot more options than was available in Standard.

Too bad Wizards forgot that when they killed Extended in favour of Modern that they carried the former's ban list with them. A no-ban format it going to degenerate quite quickly and while I can see Wizards using these early tournaments to figure out what to ban, it's also going to poison the early impressions of the format for a long time to come, probably doing more harm than good.

edit: SEE! SEE! The guy who posted the first decklist right below me did just that!

Of course it's a matter of taste, but I'd like to express here that I absolutely hate the idea of this format.

To me, after looking at the card pool, it is un-exciting, too "clean" if that makes sense. Modern was supposed to be Legacy-lite in terms of affordability, game speed/power lvl, card pool and interactions. If Pioneer was playable in Arena, I could see this argument being made for demand.

Right now, who is this really for? As a Modern player myself, I was absolutely excited when I first heard about Pauper. Because it was actually different in the way the card pool was designed. It brought something different/new to the table. In a way that was also the case for Modern when it was introduced. Now, we're just copying the idea behind Modern while taking away from it and at the same time adding nothing new (except for 3 cards on the ban list, yay!).

A real innovation would have been to allow EVERYTHING after RTR, including supplemental sets for example, which would actually create a completely new format, that would be fun to solve and have unique corner stones.

EDIT: No offense to the people who actually like this tho, to each their own

Been bored all day and just brewing random decks throughout based on decks that were brutal in their standard lives and adapting. Modern decks also had influence on it.

As a player who got tired of Magic, but did enjoy Frontier that never really kicked off at my LGS, I'm mildly interested in this.

The addition of Thoughtseize to my already strong "Shadow" deck, boosts its power.

As might some of my other old decks. Good thing I kept them all together in paper.

Time will tell if this format turns into what Frontier did, which was or lose.

I think bans may need to be applied to Aetherworks Marvel and Felidar Guardian / Saheeli Rai although Abrade might be enough to shut down Marvel

There are also different cards from the ones that were in when the Cat Combo was a problem - Thoughtseize might be enough to stop it.

The thing I like about this format is that it goes back far enough to make a decent card pool, it includes far more Gods and some Legendary Artefacts, it stops being able to effectively run four colour decks due to no fetches (which will also keep costs down), and is better for people like me who don't want the expense of putting a Modern deck together.

It seems to me that the pool of cards harkens back to a time when FNM had a lot more people playing, at least in my area. If those people, like me, have kept their decks together, it's not much adjustment to haul them back out.

If this devolves into what Standard has become, with people only playing the same three or four netdecks, that will kill it for me.

SMASHER101 says... #27

I remember the Paradoxical Outcome sai deck that was good, if that's good again I might play the format.

SMASHER101 says... #28

There WILL be netdeckers, I can guarantee that Argy.

October 24, 2019 8:37 a.m.

Argy says... #29

Well if I can beat them, I'll continue to play.

I did beat them when playing Standard.

So far my decks are doing OK in playtesting.

I think no access to fetchlands is going to shut some deck types down.

Since I have used so very few fetchlands in the past, most of my decks need little change.

Thoughtseize is a REALLY big boon to my Cast a Shadow [Pioneer] deck.

October 24, 2019 9:39 a.m.

Hey guys!

I'm a red wizard by nature, coming from years of playing Burn in Modern.

I've been looking at red powerful cards in this format and I'm not quite sure whether I should go for Goblins cuz they're fun and actually pretty decent, RDW or big mana spells. What do you think?

sergiodelrio I know, but at the same time I think super aggro strategies are still viable since I haven't seen amazing removal spells either. I think I'll try and make Ilharg work somehow :)

Wonder when/if they'll add a Pioneer section to the forums on this site soon. I mean, they did for Oathbreaker recently, and that's not even a format that WotC does anything with. Mind you, it's only been a few days since the announcement for Pioneer and I'm sure they have their hands full after setting up a deckbuilder section and trying to sort out all the legality stuff, so I'm not all that surprised they haven't made a forum section yet.

Hope you enjoy testing against it!

Since I'm personally adding new competitive Pioneer decks all the time, if you want to keep up with what's new, I suggest following me.

Alternatively, just keep checking the gauntlet folder I have linked here a couple of times.

I played my first in paper game of Pioneer tonight with StuBi

Both our decks went quite well.

Improvements can be made in how we Sideboard, and we probably just need more practice against different types of decks.

I never thought I'd be playing Competitive Magic again.
