Favorite Voltron Commander?
Commander (EDH) forum

I'm looking into playing a new kind of EDH, and Voltron sounds fun. Any suggestions for commanders?? I really enjoy playing diplomatically and not particularly being a threat until a moments notice to swoop for game.
Just after a little looking, do you think Bruna, Light of Alabaster could make a super shifty control/voltron?

Personally in my playgroup( fairly competitive) My friends have Sigarda, Host of Herons voltron and as Osang metioned above Uril, the Miststalker
I personally don't like voltron decks because they're so vulnerable to a wrath in four player free for all, And depending upon if you play 1v1 or FFA, voltron decks are really weak in comparison to other decks Of my decks I prefer U/R tempo control, B/U/G combo, Phelddagrif group hug, and my casual Karador, Ghost Chieftain reanimator are favorites of my decks.
Perosnally i like to play a more interactive deck which i find slaking in voltron decks such as uril, sigarda, and skitlles

I think control/voltron is really Weird because Control is very wrath heavy with a lot of late game options Where as voltron is very weak against wraths and very tempo early game focused

You can have control aspects in that color, but focusing on the core objective of making a Voltron out of your Commander makes the deck so much more effective; also vice versa, focusing on a passive, political control shell is much more effective if that's the deck's focus. It's difficult to mash them together since you're looking at Aggro and Control melding together.

If you decide to use Bruna, Light of Alabaster , run Traumatize . Mill your self, attack with Bruna. Get all the enchantments.

I personally enjoy Krond the Dawn-Clad for aura Voltron and Even though it wasn't really intended My Ruhan of the Fomori is quite deadly with a sword or twon equipped.

i really like Doran, the Siege Tower hes not as popular but he can do a poop loads of dmg fast and u can get him out early. With Slagwurm Armor he becomes a 2 turn clock.

Voltron is usually a vicious beat down. I highly suggest Eight-and-a-Half-Tails . He protects himself and his equipment so well.

Though 8.5-Tails isn't a control commander. Great with artifact equipments.

I personally enjoy Daxos of Meletis for equipment based Voltron decks

Chill players use Zuo Ci, the Mocking Sage for voltron. Look at that sexy evasion ability.

I have to say Sigarda, Host of Herons ,-Her casting cost is easier than some (Progenitus , Krond the Dawn-Clad and most of the 3-color commanders)-Selesnya is a good color for auras and equipments and it has good ramp, protection and removal, perfect for voltron.-Finally, she is insanely hard to get rid of. You cant target her, you cant make them sacrifice her, you can only kill her through boardwipes since she is a voltron commander so combat damage is usually not enough to kill her. And anyones first priority with sigarda is making her indestructible. These are my thoughts.

What? no luck for Sygg, River Guide ? Mr. I can give myself protection for two mana, I can be unblockable against a good number of opponents (blue is a very common color in my experience) and I give you access to the best counterspells, non-destructive monster hate (e.g Condemn ) and the best voltron enchantments?

If you are going to go voltron and make it at least half decent them you need a hexproof commander like sigarda or uril. White gives you access to some auras that give indestructibility which is nice.
But yeh..... In my experience a voltron commander without hexproof can't do anything in a, at least semi competitive, 4 player free for all.

jpeachesd I have two voltron decks, both have put up many wins.
Bant Derevi, Empyrial Tactician : I Vant, my burd... artifact voltron.

Bruna, Light of Alabaster is my current favourite, she's actually pretty resilient to boardwipes since everything that goes to your graveyard comes back, provided you can keep casting her. There's nothing like casting Bruna with Hall of the Bandit Lord and swinging with Eldrazi Conscription , Spirit Mantle and Battle Mastery .
I've heard of Thrun, the Last Troll being a decent Voltron commander since his regeneration fends off boardwipes.
For all Voltron commanders using White, Flickerform is really, really useful.

DaShPrime Wrath of God says FU to Thrun ;).
As a follow up, the reason I went with Derevi is because my meta is HUGE on boardwipes like Damnation . This means that most of the time commanders aren't able to stay out for more than a turn or two so I needed a commander that could be reliably cast repeatedly. Derevi gives me that, while also allowing me to untap mana rocks or tap down blockers. The best part is, Derevi's ability says "put" so it makes it uncounterable. All in all this makes for a commander that ALWAYS costs 4, flash, flying, 2/3, and can provide some untap effects. Short of tucking her there's not much of a way to stop her.

@Ohthenoises: that's what your Spearbreaker Behemoth or Withstand Death is there for :)
I don't really get how Derevi is good as a Voltron commander though. I get how he's good as a commander, but in Voltron not really. The problem most people have is that their stuff goes away after the commander dies, unless you're planning to use Exalted.

DaShPrime Artifact voltron. You wipe creatures on your turn? Ok, at your end step I flash Derevi in for 4, re-equip everything on my turn, swing again.
She is good because most voltron strategies are blown out by being denied their commander a few times. (Most win via commander damage.) In a meta that has 5-7 boardwipes in each deck I needed a way to have a commander that wasn't going to cost me 13-17 mana just to cast without relying on Darksteel Plate and Shield of Kaldra which, while they ARE nice they aren't always at my fingertips.
TL;DR she always cost's 4 no matter how many times she dies.

Right haha, I keep forgetting there's this little group of cards called Equipments. Maybe because the price of the Swords makes me wish I'd never heard of them
Kemba, Kha Regent is also a pretty good voltron general, esp since you have the option of not swinging with her if they have something like Maze of Ith . I seem to find that most of the best Voltron commanders have White in them somehow. Rafiq, Uril, Bruna, Sigarda, Derevi, even Zur. Not to mention that cards like Ethereal Armor , Puresteel Paladin and Eidolon of Countless Battles are all White.
And if you use Skithiryx, you're an asshole in my books hahaha.

I have a friend who runs a Rafiq of the Many deck and it's absolutely brutal if you don't have answers right away.

I'm pulling apart my Khemba deck and doing a red/white number with Aurelia, the Warleader . I think she has potential as a voltron commander. It will also be the first time I will be building a deck with alternate commanders, as I will be including Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer and Tajic, Blade of the Legion . Lots of nasty equipment, mean creatures, and spells that give me extra combat phases.

I really don't view Voltron decks as the kind that holds back, you're looking at Commanders that fit a control shell if you want to hold back and wait.
Voltron decks are usually just suit the guy up and go to town, not the kind of deck you seem to want to build; don't be discouraged though, that can be still possible with the correct colors.
Voltron decks that see a lot of play include Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon and Uril, the Miststalker . Zur the Enchanter is also good, though banned in 1v1.
Do you have a color combination in mind?
