Coming Back After a Week —Nov. 27, 2020

Well dang. I leave for a week due to finals and stuff with 2/3 upvotes on the deck, and now we're at 23! Adding to that we reached a few Top Ranked position, including the #1 Selesnya Deck on Nov. 25th, 2020! I'm thankful (I'm one day late for Thanksgiving but whatever) that people find this deck interesting! I'll be doing an update later today with a newer decklist I've been cobbling together. I hope you all enjoy it!

Thank you!

Are you committed to the artifact combo lines? Totally fine if you are, but those were a good fit for Teshar because he's mono-W and has artifact synergy. With a Selesnya commander like Hamza, you have access to more streamlined creature combos (and the good part about this is that they function as a backup beater plan much more efficiently). If you want to look into that, there's stuff like Devoted Druid + Vizier of Remedies infinite mana, Spike Feeder and Archangel of Thune infinite life and counters, and plenty more.

I recommend it because your commander automatically helps with those combos, and because green gives you access to creature tutors to help find them (or find beaters if you want to go that route).

I just wanted to say that just because a Commander has not been literally just released, does not mean it has been "solved".

What I mean is, there are some older Commanders (both in and outside of these colors) which can be fun, competitive, adaptable, AND fairly unexplored.

The best example in my mind is Dragonlord Dromoka.

He can be built simply as a beatdown strategy and work fairly well, but, you can instead try building him as a heavy-handed infinite combo deck as well.

Effectively having Grand Abolisher as your Commander allows you to do your infinite comboing without any pesky interruption and win every single time you have the mana and cards.

And to boot, I've never actually seen anyone do it before. (I wanted to, but never did.)

And even if a Commander has been built by many people, many times, they may not have done it in all of the possible ways (styles of play).

Many people have made a Wolf-Tribal deck for Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves, but I haven't seen many people make a heavy blink/flicker deck for him, abusing the life gain with cards like Well of Lost Dreams and saccing the extra tokens with Phyrexian Altar.

Point is, I don't think the Commander has to have just come out to be unexplored/have unexplored avenues.

(A personal favorite of mine is Yasharn, Implacable Earth blink/lands matter.)

abby315:

I will definitely look into those. I liked the artifact synergy for the "Wow" factor, and since I had pieces lying around already. It didn't occur to me to make it more creature focused. Thank you for pointing it out!

Reznorboy:

I never particularly said that the Hamza had been solved. I meant Teshar mainly, sorry if it came across that way.

Solved might be a bad way to put it, and thanks for bringing that to my attention. I meant solved more as in optimal for my playgroup as we do have some decks bordering competitve at our 75% range.

I do agree that commander is all for brewing and innovation, and not everything has been done yet. The reason I love the format so much is to brew decks! I just meant that the way I wanted to take Teshar had been overdone a bit and I wanted to try some new territory but in a similar vein if that makes sense? I apologize for saying solved and will change that. Thanks for the thought provoking comment!

This is pretty cool, Hamza is a pretty cool commander. I see you're focusing on artifacts, but there are some great lords for plus counters:

Abzan Falconer

Bramblewood Paragon

Tuskguard Captain

Pridemalkin

Trollbred Guardian

Champion of Lambholt

Also, Felidar Retreat is pretty busted.

I meant that I was agreeing that Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle is more or less solved. (I don't think Hamza is). I was just trying to point out that if you want something fresh, it doesn't have to be Hamza.

No problem! For other cards that fit the synergy, I'd take a look at cards used in Shalai, Voice of Plenty decks. Same colors and counter synergies. Shalai herself is a great include for protection on your combo turn if you're using creatures.

The other thing I'd recommend if you want to go the creature-combo route is Concordant Crossroads and Thousand-Year Elixir. Great includes to combo out on one turn, and both fetchable with Enlightened Tutor. Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions! Those outlast lords look super fun to be honest. I'll find a spot for them!

Reznorboy

I apologize for misunderstanding your comment. I've been running on 3 hours of sleep as it is finals week and this is typically what I do for my break. My apologies!

Very good idea! Do you have any suggestions on what to pick for payoffs for like ifinite mana with the Devoted combo? Genesis Wave and Walking Ballista come to mind but other than that I'm drawing a blank!

Arcaneful Sure do! Walking Ballista is probably the best option, but here are some others:
Ezuri, Renegade Leader gives infinite trample damage to any untapped dude (which will probably be your mana dork you're tapping for infinite);
Nylea, Keen-Eyed can draw all the creatures in your deck and then cast Craterhoof Behemoth for the win;
Helix Pinnacle but YMMV because it's only good in the context of infinite mana;
Mirror Entity also gives infinite P/T but unfortunately no trample.

I'm sure there are others in white, but I don't play a Selesnya deck so I'm not familiar with them. There's always something like end of turn White Sun's Zenith.

If you were to add other pieces to the combo you can get more convoluted, but I think having Walking Ballista, Craterhoof Behemoth, and Nylea, Keen-Eyed in your deck with appropriate tutors (Worldly Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Chord of Calling, etc.) would be plenty. You can add some of the other options and cut tutors if you don't like to play with a lot of them.
