Sideboard

Maybeboard

Just a little black thing, well lots of little black things.

Looking at the latest set I saw a pair of cards that my old vampires event deck had been missing- Asylum Visitor and Indulgent Aristocrat . (I have since added some of the set's other discard enablers, as similar tools appear to be missing in black). So I decided to see whether these could be used to make a competitive tribal vampire deck in modern. Happily, with the banning of twin token and mass creature hate has died down enough to make this strategy possible, 9_if not fully viable_) scratch that, I just went 3/1 at fnm. The key to playing it is to get a card draw tool, then empty your hand as quickly as possible into useful creatures/disruption. with scrivener/asylum you can expect to draw a lot of cards, with zombie infestation helping you turn the useless ones into sacrifices, as well as trick out asylum and bloodghast.

I think there is potential for a couple of massive top-end creatures- I've been running diviinity of pride for tron (and other low aggro matchups), and from under the floorboards (which has been surprisingly effective), but am still testing. Let me know your thoughts.

Am testing Gravecrawler / Mind Slash with more scriveners as a sideboard option.

The gameplan

Play aggressively, comboing big damage turns 3/4/5 against decks with poor board presence, prioritising power for the various lifelink sources. Trade aggressively, and drop exess cards to zombie infestation. Madness out cards as instants just before your turn. When your hand is empty try to keep blood scrivener and Assylum visitor on the board.

Why Monocolour

Mana fixing costs life, and a lot of modern meagame abusing decks heavily rely on this missing life to 'have enough fuel in the tank' so to speak, so with a few lifegain sources many of these decks just fizzle. sure, they're prepared for kitchen finks, but its not the same when you are pathing [vampire aristocrat], rather than a bigger threat, and trying to fight off the beatdown.
