Get your life total as low as you can by casting spells and using abilities that cost/lose you life in order to trigger the Fateful Hour ability on Thraben Doomsayer, put counters on Font of Agonies, and most importantly, make Death's Shadow as big as possible. Use Phyrexian Unlife to keep your life total low and maximize Shadow’s stats without accidentally killing yourself.

A splash of life gain was added to keep you afloat if you get too low without the safety net of having Phyrexian Unlife out, and to let you keep paying life for abilities. Life gain also keeps Font of Agonies from being a dead card if you have it while you’re low on life.

I originally made this deck for my roommate Harrison to try to get him into Magic after he told me he used to play Hearthstone. He said his favourite play style in Hearthstone was to use the Warlock class to get himself down to exactly 1 life point which then allowed him to pull off some insane game winning combo, so he wanted to play a Magic deck that felt similar in concept. This is what I came up with. (In hindsight, Near-Death Experience would have been the route to go to truly match the Hearthstone vibe.) However, my roommate decided he didn’t actually want to give Magic a try, so I’ve rebuilt the deck from what I originally made for him into something a little less gimmicky and a little more focused.

This deck isn’t meant to be competitive, but that said, if you have any suggestions on how to improve the deck, or just have any questions or comments on the deck, let me know, I'd love to hear them!
