So, this deck did me proud in Richmond! I obviously lost the main event, but after I dropped, I went 3-1 in the modern rebound side event and won 2 Modern Master packs and 9 BotG packs! This deck just preys on all the combo/control decks! My losses were all to aggro decks, which I still have a bit of trouble with when they're mono-colored (i.e.- fetch-less so I can't activate traps as easy). I even beat out a Living End deck! Think about it! (Thank you Surgical Extraction!)

I saw your comment on fatality292's deck T1: Mill... T2: Mill... T3: Mill... and was hoping you could advise me with my Library Destruction deck. On that page I have left a detailed description explaining where I wanna go with it.
If you could tell me if I am going about it the right way and help me finish it I would very much appreciate it.

well put together. I would swap one for one on the Thought Scour to add one Mind Funeral if you have it to add.The funeral is just too powerful to not have four of in the deck.

Playing in modern i have found mill decks to have artifact decks that happen really quickly, Poison/Infect, and the obvious. Goddang Emrakul, the Aeons Torn to be the biggest problems. Fast aggro can be a pain too. but it looks like you have a bit of lifegain with the incursion, the recall in the sideboard for the first one in my list of problems. and the leyline for the last one.(in my opinion the miller killer) I would drop the green all together and go with a couple more of the recalls. That way you can dump the tomb and the pool and 2x more the Watery Grave other than that it looks really solid. A plus one from me because i am a fellow DIMIR fan.

@Quadsimotto - I keep the green splash for Nature's Claim first and foremost for decks that SB Leyline of Sanctity . That's even worse than Emrakul, the Aeons Torn imo since you can't do anything against them once that hits the table. If they have it in their opening hand I'll need a 1 turn answer for it if I wan't to have a chance of winning the game. Hence the green splash. It also helps that my deck doesn't care about the lifegain they get from Claim, plus they have the added benefit of being spot removal for Affinity-style decks that run around in modern in addition me siding in the Hurkyl's Recall . So when facing Artifact decks, it's like I side in 2 board wipes and 4 spot removal that are cheaper than Doom Blade ! ;)

I also don't use all 4 Mind Funeral since having multiples in your opening hand isn't very good since they'll just sit there until turn 3 at least. I prioritze the Breaking and Glimpse the Unthinkable before Funeral anyway, in the hopes of milling land and having the Funeral just finish them off after the solid mill spells do their work.

I have never seen Darkness and i really like it.it might fit in my deck better then the two removal spells as i can absorb large strikes worth of damage.

I personally LOVE Darkness ! It just saves my butt in many instances, since Modern is a format that is mostly dominated by creature wincons. Even combo decks like Splinter Twin combo out to make a million creatures that swing for the win, which is something that the mill decks that use Fog Bank for defense can't handle. It handles both weenie aggro decks and huge creature-ramp decks the same, which makes it very viable in my book!

Have you thought about using Extirpate in place of Surgical Extraction as it has split second. Also, I LOVE the Darkness idea, definitely using that idea

Haha just read the comment about, I guess we both like Darkness !

I do like Extirpate as a card, but I find myself tapping out during my early turns often enough to warrent the use of the phyrexian mana to pay for Surgical Extraction . My buddy likes to use a Splinter Twin Modern deck, and often I can get either one of his Deceiver Exarch or Splinter Twin cards on turn one or two using either Thought Scour or Hedron Crab and I often don't have a black open that early. Its great fun to play Thought Scour on the first turn of the game revealing either part of the combo then Extracting it so he can't do anything exept attempt a Delver beatdown, which takes him long enough to net me the win.

I like the synergy with Archive Trap and Surgical Extraction /Ghost Quarter . I am very impressed with this build. I also like the interaction with Misty Rainforest and Hedron Crab deffinetely +1 from me

I like Shelldock Isle , but why include it if you curve out (save Trap which is typically zero) at 3? It also ETB tapped...

I dig your use of Darkness , to echo other posts. Out of curiosity, have you tried out Remand ?

March 19, 2014 3:53 a.m.

@Kornex2000 - Thanks for the +1! Although I will remind you that there isn't really synergy between Surgical Extraction and Archive Trap , as it is you who searches their library not your opponent. Many people splash white for Path to Exile for the added synergy with Trap though.

@aeonstoremyliver - Shelldock Isle functions much the same way as Augur of Bolas does in the older mill lists. It's virtual card advantage that synergizes well when I side in Ensnaring Bridge . The CIPT part of it does hinder its function as a land, but since I hardly ever need more than 2 mana to play my spells is why I'm able to run it. If its my only land in a starting hand, depending on what else I have I'll mull to 6, but most of the time I can play around it just fine since more than 1/3 of my deck has a cmc of 1.

As far as using Remand goes, I'm not looking for a control deck. Keeping 2 open for counterspells when the majority of my mill spells are sorcery speed is hard to do effectively, and it doesn't deal with what my opponent does during their first 2 turns. My mill deck is quite good at defeating the combo decks that thrive in modern right now, even agaist the Living End deck due to my MD Extractions. It's the aggro decks that cause the most trouble. I use IoKs to take out early threats, then stall with Darkness/Crypt Incursion later and so far it has worked well in combination with my sorceries. Also I run fewer lands in general compared to most lists, which means there are some games that I don't get more than 3-4 lands out which makes holding mana for counters harder. I did see a good Mill/Control list a while back that tries to control the game but has fewer mill cards in general. I'm more in the 'Burn-Mill' camp that just tries to win/disrupt as fast as possible.

maybe Relic of Progenitus in the side in place of the crypt?

March 19, 2014 9:35 a.m.

Kre says... #16

Relic of Progenitus gets rid of my own graveyard, which is not something I want to do when playing Snapcaster Mage . Nihil Spellbomb in the SB gives me the option to draw the card and doesn't need to cost the 1 mana to activate. It's just a bonus if I make use of it. I just really like the Crypts since they don't cost anything which doens't affect my normal tempo of Milling.
