So this past Friday, eating some Wingstop with friends after a fun night of EDH, we all challenged each other to make a deck in a color or colors we don't like, picked by someone else in the group, without using EDHrec (this was mostly pointed at one person). We otherwise didn't have any limitations, just that we had to figure out a commander ourselves, and think of what to do with them ourselves, to see where our brains would default.
I don't particularly like red, and they know it. So naturally, I was tasked with making a mono-red deck. I didn't really like most of the stuff I saw from the possible commanders, mostly either powerful individual creatures (see Akroma, Angel of Fury), kindred things I don't particularly love (goblins and dragons), or things that were interesting, but I knew would immediately make me the target (looking at you, Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer
).
Then I saw Homura, Human Ascendant. I loved OG Kamigawa and all of its janky weirdness. I figured I could make something around a giant, powerful anthem. And what love getting a big power buff and flying? Why, crappy creatures with double strike of course! I'm not sure why my brain went this direction, going wide would almost certainly be a smarter option, but there's still something about double strike that tickles me to this day, even after playing for almost 25 years.
So yeah, I jammed in as many stupid little double strikers as I reasonably could, threw in some buffs, added some neat pieces like Demonmail Hauberk or Blood Frenzy *list* to solve the mini-game of "kill my own commander," and bam, my mono-red deck. Because Of how cheap (and bad) the creatures in the deck are, I decided to go the budget route, something one of my friends very hilariously did not do.
