Pulling Teeth

Sorcery

Clash with an opponent. If you win, target player discards two cards. Otherwise, that player discards a card. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of his or her library, then puts that card on the top or bottom. A player wins if his or her card had a higher converted mana cost.)

Bloodcurdler/Peer into the Abyss I like because at first glance they kinda look like blobs but upon a closer examination you see the abomination

Foreshadow/Hair-Strung Koto: Give me haunted house vibes

Thought Scour/Pulling Teeth: Torture much?

Brink of Madness/Dreamborn Muse: Not inherently scary but becomes more and more unsettling the longer you look.

Grafted Identity: This is one I like because it doesn't really look scary but understanding the events leading up to someone sewing another's face upon theirs is rather terrifying.

I'm not a huge fan of one-use single-target discard, especially stuff that's very conditional like Pulling Teeth (probably like a 50% chance to do nothing), or stuff like Necrogen Spellbomb (needs some kind of artifact recursion engine to be powerful).

In addition, I feel like a couple of your card choices have much better versions that you could run. Withstand Death feels much worse than Heroic Intervention, and the 1 mana difference is not all that significant. Eyeblight's Ending, while very flavorful, is a 3-cmc kill spell and there are quite a lot of powerful elves you'll want to be killing. Doom Blade, Murderous Cut or Hero's Downfall feel like much better options.

Finally, you're missing the best mana elf of them all: Priest of Titania. A 2-cmc dork that taps for tons of mana is incredibly powerful, and with a 5-cmc commander, you'll want every bit of powerful ramp available to make sure you can keep casting him and making hordes of elves.

Quest for the Nihil Stone can be comical along with Shrieking Affliction and both are fairly cheap so it will stay in budget if need be. these make it extremely unforgiving for having no cards in hand. I always favored Hypnotic Specter over Liliana's in 1v1 because lili's is more multiplayer. Plus if you have both him and Dark ritual in hand you can cheat him in on turn one.Pulling Teeth is also a nice card and Hymn to Tourach.

Thank you so much GearNoir! I took a few of your suggestions to heart. You were definitely right about Pulling Teeth and Chain of Smog, as after I tested them in a similar Penny Dreadful list, they just didn't meet requirements for good card advantage. Cry of Contrition looks to be a MUCH better replacement, especially with the extra removal now in the deck. I ended up replacing the Diabolic Edict in my sideboard with the far superior Geth's Verdict, but sadly, after looking at how intensely mono-black my entire deck now is, I think I'll pass on the Mishra's Factory. Never thought about how powerful Hypnotic Specter could be... I'll give him a shot in the mainboard, see how it rolls. Again, thanks for the input!

Great start!

Looks like you're trying for completely creatureless mainboard, but I would recommend Hypnotic Specter instead of Notion Theif...in fact you may just want to drop the U splash and go mono-B.

I would consider dropping some discard however and pick up more spot removal - Murderous Cut is huge, Geth's Verdict, Ruinous Path, Mutilate, etc.

I'd ditch Chain of Smog (not much advantage here for you losing cards) and Pulling Teeth (with such a low curve, you'll be paying 2CMC for one discard most of the time) IMO. Instead you could use Smallpox and Cry of Contrition or perhaps Mire's Toll.

Just some alternatives.

I'd even go so far as to recommend a 4 of Mishra's Factory even if you can't include Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.

Hope that helps!

I've had a lot of success running both Call the Bloodline and Asylum Visitor for card draw and hand filtering. Master of the Feast is pretty much the opposite of your current gameplan, and tormented thoughts sits a little high on the curve. Consider Cunning Lethemancer, Abyssal Nocturnus, Blackmail, Cry of Contrition, Raven's Crime, Delirium Skeins, Megrim, Mire's Toll, Necrogen Mists, Pulling Teeth and Quest for the Nihil Stone. Shrieking Affliction is traditional. For sideboard, Faerie Macabre, Bloodhusk Ritualist, Hypnotic Specter, Scepter of Fugue, Sinister Concoction, other than the traditional 'this will help against a specific matchup stuff.
