For Chainer, Nightmare Adept, looting is your friend its sorta like having a limited second hand. Of course you can use his ability only once a turn so I think having a good amount of recursion like Apprentice Necromancer is good. Pair it with cards like Grim Haruspex you can refill your hand to discard more cards. So I would build it as a looting deck focused on recuring good stuff.

  1. Discard and cast Apprentice Necromancer using Chainer, Nightmare Adept’s ability.
  2. Sacrifice Apprentice Necromancer bring back a creature from your graveyard such as Archfiend of Despair swing and sacrifice it at your end step.
  3. With Grim Haruspex in play you will draw a card which you can discard to Chainer, Nightmare Adept to recast Apprentice Necromancer next turn.

Using madness cards can help you retain some more value as well.

Another fun thing you could do is target Phyrexian Delver with Apprentice Necromancer and you can recur another target creature permanently. Keep in mind you can do this on other people’s turns as well so with enough mana you could recur 3-4 creatures a round but keep in mind Phyrexian Delver does drain your life.

You can also utilize sac outlets if you do use nonpermanent recursion. So Viscera Seer, Altar of Dementia, Goblin Bombardment, etc.

Encore could also fit in Rakshasa Debaser.

Just try not to include too many different things or the deck becomes too janky. Tho we all love our jank.

Out of the two I would go with Chainer, Nightmare Adept if you want a deck that is somewhat reliable and can utilize the cmdr while also not having to focus on the cmdr.

On the other hand using the lunch lady as a cmdr really requires you build around her or she is pretty useless as you wont have food tokens to activate her ability. But with limited food token cards I think only The Underworld Cookbook actually cares about discard. I do think she can be a fun janky cmdr and have a Stuffy Doll deck planned for her.

In terms of commander I think they can be pretty fun, although not as strong as they initially seem when you realize how mana intensive they really are.

Intrepid Adversary: I would put in a Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa deck for some flicker shenanigans. Swing in with my white weenies then flicker Intrepid Adversary paying its etb to pump my unblocked creatures.

Spectral Adversary: Good for its flexibility and would maybe put it in a simic or bant deck. I like that it can target itself.

Tainted Adversary: Grave Titan but not as good

Bloodthirsty Adversary: meh

Primal Adversary I do not care for.

All of these have more efficient cards that more or less do the same, so these cards more of a fun include.

I am working on a Rakdos morph deck and have come across Thran Lens and Ghostly Flame.

Thran Lens seems to have more obvious applications such as:

Ghostly Flame on the other hand I can't think of any useful applications as it doesn't circumvent targeting a creature with "protection from red/black". Even if it did that would be a niche ability not prevalent in my meta.

So I was curious if there were any cards/abilities that benefit from Thran Lens and Ghostly Flame beyond the ones I mentioned.

As much as I love flickering I have always wanted to use phasing. It just doesn't quite fit my play style, so I do hope they make the ability more reliable because tucking your creature away for an entire round in commander is a bit long.

I had put Teferi's Veil into my first commander deck, but it did not function as I had hoped. So I'm still looking for a proper place for it.

golgarigirl interesting i haven’t heard about that but if it is true I will probably do the same because that seems pretty dumb, why wouldn’t they make the werewolf mechanics work together.

I think it would be pretty cool. Of course they will need balancing but if your playgroup is cool with it you could give everyone copies of the proxies to test out in decks. Once you guys find a balance you can make some custom proxies on etsy probably.

DemonDragonJ I’m curious have you ever proxied your custom cards and tested them out in games?

September 2, 2021 8:39 p.m.

Not sure about how all the mechanics work yet but we got a werewolf commander so I am happy.

Also “disturb” seems like a cool ability but I have a feeling the flip side will only be spirits since I imagine it is like disturbing the grave and a ghost appears.

That is a hard one because it is pretty easy to remove so theoretically you shouldn’t win that way often. I think it is one of those things where it needs a little bit of play testing to strike a balance.

Same Junkygoatgibblets my playgroup if anything are curious fellows and are interested to see how a deck will playout especially if it seems unfitting or is janky. Part of the play experience is seeing your opponents do cool things and using cards in ways you would not have thought to do yourself.

On the otherhand there is also nothing wrong with building a straight-forward deck.

Said on Infinite or not?...

If I’m understanding ur set up correctly this does not go infinite. Mystic Reflection states “the next time” so not until the end of turn just the next instance. So what would happen is:

  1. You target Felidar Guardian with Mystic Reflection.
  2. Cast Rattlechains or any other creature and it will enter as a copy of Felidar Guardian.
  3. You target Felidar Guardian with the copy then when it enters the battlefield again you target the copy of Felidar Guardian
  4. When the copy enters the battlefield again it would enter as Rattlechains

So you exiled the original and the copy once each which nets you two tokens. Many other ways you can go infinite.

September 1, 2021 5:12 p.m.

I don't run Mairsil, the Pretender but I feel like we get a handful of cards with activated abilities that are worth using assuming we aren't going for peak efficiency and casual fun.

From DnD alone I would consider these depending on how I built the deck:

Some other sets:

But also just because a commander doesn't get new cards worth putting in doesn't mean it can't be fun. There are tons of fringe commanders that are fun building just because they lack support.

libraryjoy Same I think Kamigawa has some pretty interesting commanders and great art. I think a Kentaro, the Smiling Cat deck that utilizes Maskwood Nexus and has only Wastes as lands as a restriction could be interesting.

FormOverFunction That is an interesting card I havent heard of Brine Hag before. I’m actually building a deck that utilizes Turn to Frog affects to basically make my opponents play vanilla creatures and that would fit in perfectly.

I really only play commander so I’d say the Luxophile and Zoophile are possible to reach. Getting to 80 life is possible running a lifelink deck. And 30 creatures is also obtainable through token.

The problem with Necrophile is through milling or wheels like Traumatize and Whispering Madness 30 creatures doesn’t take much if it checks everyones graveyard.

Pyrophile is my favorite of the four the closer to winning you are fhe faster you die if you lose the flip.

Sweet these are great suggestions, I shall add them to the list. Thank you!

August 31, 2021 9:58 p.m.

Well if you want to tap/untap your own creatures the inspired ability goes well, but there are not many worth using. You could also look for cards with similar wording to Renegade Wheelsmith and Stonybrook Schoolmaster.

Otherwise there are a couple cards like Azami, Lady of Scrolls that allows you to tap your own creatures to draw cards and then you could untap and repeat.

If you are targeting your opponent's creatures here are a few cards you could use:
