Hair-Strung Koto Discussion

Hi! Wow!

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kind words, advice, and upvote! I'm glad you like what I have so far for the description. I always get those up before asking for help on decks because if there's no description it's near impossible to help. Anyway, I wanted to make a Intruder Alarm combo deck and a Zur deck, so putting them together seem perfect! I wanted a really unique deck since my last deck was heavily based on someone else's.

I see your point about streamlining the combos. I've been worrying I was going a little too far in some places(especially with #2) and I agree with your assesment.

Combo #1

Yeah those two creatures, Steward of Solidarity, and Necrotic Ooze(with them in the 'yard) is the main game plan. All others are secondary and may be cut. I know the Steward isn't as good and is near useless alone but I needed some consistency without having to cash out for Demonic Tutor haha

Sun Titan is great. He hits half my deck :)

Standstill seems okay. It looks kinda easy to play around and doesn't help me if my opponent's board presence is greater. Still, I'll consider it.

Yeah, the lack of haste in the colors is killer. Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves and their tutors, and Hall of the Bandit Lord are all I have atm. The pillowfort strategy how I live the extra turn to win and I'm glad you noticed and appreciated that!

Grand Abolisher, Shielded by Faith, and Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir are all being considered. Great suggestions!

I agree with you about all the extra creatures, but I'll keep Steward of Solidarity for now because of the cheap cost and because Sun Titan can get her back.

Combo #2

Yeah, honestly... someone telling me I'm overcommiting on #2 is exactly what I needed. You're right haha

I'll probably end up shuffling this part around a bit. I like the schoolmaster and I like how he can also combo with Sunstrike Legionnaire. I'll leave them, Hermetic Study, and Psionic Gift, then probably toss the rest.

Vedalken AEthermage is good. I'll pick one up!

Combo #3

Gray Merchant of Asphodel will probably be cut but Hell's Caretaker has a lot of synergy with my recursion package of Karmic Guide, Reveillark, Sun Titan, Fiend Hunter, and Auramancer. He's just generally very good and near infinite with Alarm out. I'll ditch the combo but I think he can slide into another category.

While all that's going on.

I've decided Suture Priest and Soul Warden are out. Altar of the Brood and Hair-Strung Koto will stay for now.

I like Trinket Mage because he's a cheap tutor, but I don't have many other targets for him.

Martyr's Cause is one I have actually! I haven't tested it out yet but we'll see!

After streamlining Combo #1 and Combo #2 here's what they could look like:

Thanks for laying everything out for my like that! Extremely helpful!

I like that way of looking at it. Pillowfort first, combo second. Thanks for that advice!

Again, thanks for laying all the suggestions out like this! It's especially helpful when you've already talked about the deck a ton and now you're giving the suggestions to go off of what you've already said. I'm finding this extremely helpful and will try to do it like this when I help people!

Ethereal Armor is an easy addition. I already have one so I'll throw it in there!

Empyrial Armor will be good when I get my Necropotence!

Once again, loving the summarized lists. It's nice to see what the deck could look like in this way. You are good at what you do friend. You deserve that top helper rank.

I'm glad you recognize some creativity and uniqueness in the deck. I'll gladly take all of your advise into consideration.

I'm going to be updating the deck soon, perhaps this weekend. I'd love it if you'd look at it again once I do... though I know you've definitely spent a lot of time on it haha! Let me know if it'd be okay to tag you or something :)

My sincerest thanks!

Suns_Champion on More combo help!

RazortoothMtg Thanks for your help! Zur the Enchanter is the commander. I know I'm missing out on Red and Green, great colors for Alarm combos, but I don't mind.

I'm still running some mana dorks, and Silver Myr could make Puppet Conjurer but that's it I think.

Altar of the Brood is perfect! Thank you!

Marrow-Gnawer seems to clunky but Skirsdag High Priest might work!

I like those tap outlets... especially Hair-Strung Koto which becomes another mill win-con.

Thanks again! If you have any more ideas hit me!

Gidgetimer Yes perfect!! I can't believe I didn't think of that! That enables Puppet Conjurer cards too! Thanks!

RazortoothMtg any other cards like puppet conjurer?

Who's the commander? Is there a specific reason we need to be Esper? Because Impact Tremors, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Earthcraft, Glare of Subdual, Kyren Negotiations, and Llanowar Behemoth could all be good. It would also allow you to add Voyaging Satyr/Kiora's Follower + Intruder Alarm + Forbidden Orchard for another infinite, and allow you to add Birds of Paradise type cards so Puppet Conjurer type cards could be infinite.

For the Impact Tremors, you have Altar of the Brood kind of.

Tap for Token: Marrow-Gnawer (requires another rat to start), Skirsdag High Priest (requires Morbid and 2 other creatures to start)

Tap outlets: Galecaster Colossus, Hair-Strung Koto, Mothdust Changeling, Patron Wizard, Opposition,

Other cards that could be good: Wake Thrasher,

Pieguy396 on Good replacements for wheel effects ...

It looks to me like you're fine on wheel effects, if you're looking for cards to take out, I would start with Altar of the Brood, Hair-Strung Koto, and Invoke the Firemind. Also, just so you know, Trade Secrets is banned in EDH.

Righteous Authority is another card that comes to mind for me in terms of something that at a glance looks really great with lots of potential with so many Spellbook effects available...and all the ckeeky kamigawa cards out there like Jushi Apprentice/Kiyomaro, First to Stand but again mana investment makes it pretty tough to pull off for 5 mana to be just part of a combo piece.

@Sinist3r yeah id love to take a peek at another Skaab Ruinator brew!and yeah i agree about card disadvantage, life gain, and +1/+1 counter based cards to be difficult to navigate traps for a lot of players (I've been that guy more than once..).

@Xica thank you for bringing Nimble Obstructionist to my attention! i'll have to playtest that guy.... i would like to see you being right about some of these cards finding a place.

@sylvannos Hair-Strung Koto and Realms Uncharted seem pretty interesting... Hedron Crab with maybe some shennagans with Pili-Pala + Freed from the Real and Crucible of Worlds?

Glare of Subdual and Long-Forgotten Gohei were some of my favorite cards in Standard from eras past, but sadly aren't that viable in Modern.

I've also wanted to build a deck around Quest for Ula's Temple, Nullstone Gargoyle, Hair-Strung Koto, and Realms Uncharted. They're all missing some key components, however.

Other oddball cards I'd like to use are Fossil Find, Boneyard Wurm, and Nighthowler. I also wish there was there was room in decks to play the Skarrg, the Rage Pits cycle of utility lands from the original Ravnica.

EpicFreddi on Bant Devoted Company (Not counters ...

Okay, can we all collectively (hehe) agree that counters company is stupid?
Anyway, I'm writing today because I was tinkering with the idea of playing the Vizier/Druid combo with Bant Colors.
Bant would not only make Noble Hierarch much better, but it would give us access to Treasure Mage which would get us platinum angle, Wurmcoil Engine and Hair-Strung Koto (yes, that's a card. When we have the combo we can finish the game with it.)
The Koto would be a "cute" idea, but well, i like cute ideas.
Bant would also enable the Knightfall-Combo in addition to the Druid-Combo.
For the infinite-Life-combo the only sac-outlet I found would be Starved Rusalka . But with the activation cost I would need 4 cards, so I'm not sure about that. Maybe as a 1-off.
Let me know what you think. Any other additions/ideas?

greatdevourer on Tips for Momir Vig? 1st iteration

Let me start by saying that you have picked a great commander. I like Momir Vig, Simic Visionary. He is so much fun, as long as you don't mind shuffling alot. Here's my Simic deck Simic Toolbox for a reference.
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary let you build a toolbox deck that has many options and deal with a wide variety of threats. Let's use that.

I'm going to start with basic strategy, then move onto what to remove, and then what to consider putting in.
Due to the likelyhood of Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, Gaea's Blessing, or Elixir of Immortality being in an opponent's deck, the mill stategies tand to not work well in commander games. Especially multi-player games. Now, I'm not saying that you can't mill the opponents, just don't rely on that stategy too much.
Additionally, you should be in the 34 to 38 lands range. Only having 29 lands could really slow you down. Don't rely on mana creatures because opponents will target them to hinder you.

I would remove the following:
Blanchwood Armor, only sees forest, auras aren't that good in commander, and there are better options.
Curse of the Bloody Tome, only works on a sinlge opponent.
Khalni Heart Expedition, there are much moer efficient land seach methods.
Ring of Kalonia and Ring of Thune, there are better equipments and other artifacts to consider.
Gridlock, weak tap target permanent ability. Too much of a mana sink.
Gatecreeper Vine, Creatures with defender can't attack and in later parts of the game, just disappoint more often than help. The search for a gate only nets one card.
Skullwinder helps your opponents as much as it helps you.
Wood Elves only finds a forest. Borderland Ranger, Sylvan Ranger, or Farhaven Elf may be better options. And/Or add Breeding Pool.

Without haste, creatuers that have tap abilities are just targets until they lose summoning sickness. Let's minimize those.
Boreal Druid, Kiora's Follower, Llanowar Elves, Merfolk Mesmerist are all cards to consider cutting for lands or stronger creatures.

These are maybe remove or maybe keep, depends on where you want to focus:
Fertile Ground, more land would be better.
Ghostly Touch, better ways to untap a permanent
Paragon of Eternal Wilds, only sees green creatures.

Now for the toolbox creatures. Let's really expand on your +1 counters theme. In no particular order:
From my deck, look at Cytoplast Manipulator, Cytoplast Root-Kin, Cytospawn Shambler, Forgotten Ancient, Helium Squirter, Plaxcaster Frogling, Spike Feeder, Spike Weaver, Triskelion.
Additionally Armorcraft Judge, Baloth Pup, Oran-Rief Hydra, Ainok Guide, Avatar of the Resolute, Battlefront Krushok, Hooded Hydra, Experiment Kraj, Fertilid are all fun cards with abilities that capitalize on counters.
Mystic Snake gives you a repeatable counterspell when you have Roaring Primadox or a Crystal Shard on the field.
Murkfiend Liege, makes everything stronger and untaps your dudes each turn. Truly obnoxious with a Hair-Strung Koto in play.
Gilder Bairn can accelerate your creatures and planeswalkers. But to really abuse it you need a Holdout Settlement, Springleaf Drum or Hair-Strung Koto in play to tap it.
Sphinx of Magosi has been a favorite of mine in commander decks. Flyer, card draw, and keeps gettign bigger.
Omnibian is a good way to remove an opponents blocking creature by reducing it to a 3/3 after blockers are declared and before damage happens.
Simic Guildmage is good for the counters, but if you really want to run some auras then he gets better.

Other cards to consider:
Crystal Shard lets you block and then bounce a creature you control so that you can reuse the 'enters the battlefield' triggers.
Durable Handicraft give you an option to put a counter on any creatures as it enters the field.
Hardened Scales is a great card in this deck and is cheaper than Doubling Season.
Halimar Depths, Khalni Garden, Llanowar Reborn, Oran-Rief, the Vastwood, Temple of Mystery and Treetop Village have always been good to me.
Simic Growth Chamber lets you bounce the Halimar Depths, Khalni Garden or a tapped basic. Also retriggers the landfall cards.

Writing this up has made me want to get off my chair and go build my Simic commander deck. Thanks!I hope that these suggestions help you. As always, temper these suggestions with your collection and your budget. Feel free to take a look at my decks and let me know what you think.
