FNM Update

So I took this deck to FNM tonight on a crash course to see how it would perform.

I ended the night 3-2 and took 4th or 5th place...can't remember exactly. My two losses went to the two players that tied for 1st place. This was my first time ending FNM with a winning record and my first time placing, so I was very happy with that. To make the night better I won 2 boosters, 1 of which contained a FOIL Jace, Architect of Thought. I guess you could say I was the overall winner of the night.

Not bad for a prototype deck!

I went 1-3 at FNM and it should have went alot better, I made to many player mistakes and it cost me alot of games. The first game I lost against a W human deck in 3 games. First game I played I got mana screwed and by the time I was ready to start playing the game was over. The second game I kept his creatures from staying around and powering up and as a result I beat him quite soundly. The third game I stayed with a hand without any removal in it and I paid for it when he turned a Champion of the Perish into a 5/5 and I had nothing to respond with. In my second round I won against a badly put together blue deck I am not sure what the strategy of this deck was but 2-0 win for me with little to no resistance in either one of those games. In my 3rd game I played against a UW control game. I won the first round after a long struggle to kill him, I had to focus on killing him with 2 Gravecrawlers along with a Geralf's Messenger I found out later that on the next turn he would have done 16 damge and healed himself 16 points, I am not sure what his combo was but I am glad that I got the win. In game 2 I ended up losing after Oblivion Ring and Detention Sphere took out my Vampire Nighthawk, Geralf's Messenger and Gravecrawler I had no response to those exiling cards or the control spells that he had and I suffered for it. After the game I looked at my next card and it would have been a Brimstone Volley which would have ended the game with my win. In the 3rd game I took a hand with 4 swamps in it along with a Geralf's Messenger, Gravecrawler and Blood Artist I should have done a mulligan because in that game I got mana flooded and his detention sphere and oblivion ring really hurt me and gave me a lost. In the final round I again went 2-1 this time against a RW Human deck. Honestly these 3 games I don't want to remember I played a Rakdos Keyrune instead of a Geralf's Messenger had I played the messenger the game would have gone to me. In another game I didn't take a muligan when I should have and took a loss and for the 1 win I had it was simply because his deck didn't perform and I drew into cards that played the game for me. All in all I should have done much better and I am beating myself up for it. I need to work on doing mulligan's and looking at what my opponent uses to my advantage instead of just playing my deck the same way.

Considering cutting 2-3 lands in favor of Evolving Wilds to make sure I curve into the 2 req plains for the doomsayer/silverblade unless anyone thinks my mana balance needs to actually loose white? It'll be fine once the Godless Shrine gets reprinted but as a temp fix what do you guys think?

FNM Failure

So I've been out of the game for about 8 months, and I entered my first tournament literally minutes after this deck was built. Partially due to inexperience/unfamiliarity with this deck, I got stomped my first 4 games. Once I got home and played casually with a friend I started doing a lot better, but still the deck didn't seem to flow as well as I thought. I was under the impression that the current standard had everyone playing a lot of board wipe, and that I'd need to be worried about keeping my goblin hoard alive and functioning, but I actually had just the opposite problem. I had a hard as hell time getting Krenko out / alive due to the 4 mana issue (which the Goblin Electromancer + Battle Hymn helped with I figured out once I had dropped from the tourney) and if Krenko DID get out, EVERY game I played he either got arrested, oblivion ringed, or fiend hunter'd. I noticed that the Faithless Lootings didn't make much of a difference (and I'm starting to think there would be a better alternative... suggestions? since I'm playing blue as well) and I literally never played Teleportal... would really love some suggestions on how to replace these. Burn at the Stake always spelled out a victory if I got it off, and all my counters dealt with literally anything people threw at me, but that was in the rare event that I could get away with tapping all 4 for Krenko turn 4 or 5 and not get wiped before my mana untapped the next turn. PLEASE give me suggestions here, I traded away a lot of my alternative deck components to get some Red/Blue dual lands for this deck.

Added Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip and Vorapede to the maybeboard, not sure if I should swap Overrun and Increasing Savagery for them.

Alright so I played against a Rakdos and got f-word up with Slaughter Games. But now I'm trying to make up to it with a few more cards, especially Nivmagus Elemental.

While I really enjoy making a single big guy and swinging for loads of damage, it doesn't quite work outside of casual. Leaned away from +1/+1 counters to ramp up the aggro and dropped some straight up bad cards. Overall it becomes much quicker and more competitive while not having to shell out any more money than I had to before.

Mainboard Settled

Over the past month, I have been playtesting and tweaking the deck for some time. And I have come to a decision on how the mainboard deck plays best. Rather than having creature cards like Delver of Secrets  Flip and Hypersonic Dragon, this deck needed to focus more on the spells it can cast with greater efficiency and synergy. Epic Experiment is a great card to have here because many of the cards in this deck have flashback and/or can be brought back from the graveyard with Mystic Retrieval.

Took out the Cagebreakers for Precinct Captains and threw some Riders of Gavony in the sideboard to hate on tribal. Would've loved to see the Cagebreakers work, but after a little testing their drop is unfortunately a little too high.

Added some original duals and ramp spells for more consistency in the mana base. I need to drop two cards, but I'm not sure which ones yet. Also, i think i need some utility lands, like Tower of the Magistrate for equipment based decks

Will be adding in 2x Tamiyo, the Moon Sage as soon as I get them. As well as 2 more Detention Spheres, and a Sphinx's Revelation.

I'll be taking out 1 Hover Barrier and 1 Jace, Memory Adept once I get those additional Tamiyos.

Added in 3x Hover Barrier for blocking.

Will be removing Think Twice for Sphinx's Revelation.

Well, the deck's been changed a little bit, runs good but still needing work. Dropped 1 Jace AoT, Rakdos Return, Increasing Ambition and put 3 Rakdos Keyrune in the main. Beyond that, it's not changed much.
