Sam Stoddard gave us a little hint

What is this mysterious, high costed spoiler and how could it make a big splash in a 3 colored format?

APPLE01DOJ says... #2

I dunno, Debt to the Deathless is the coolest card ever. Sadly only EDH playable :/

Hyper bad Black Sun's Zenith ?

Gidgetimer says... #5

I'm not sure, but with Quad black and a minimum mana cost of 6 that X better work wonders. The absolute max I see it ever being cast for is X=3 so to make a splash in standard it either needs to be a permanent or immediately win the game. It could be a black enchantment with "At the beginning of your upkeep each opponent discards X cards at random" but they don't like random discard and MBD doesn't need to remain a thing. Outside of that I don't see much being powerful enough to matter though.

I'm thinking it'll just be another overcosted Exile spell comme Silence the Believers and Gild

TheRedDude says... #9

the only way for it to be playable would be for it to multiply x or have an even better effect than Sphinx's Revelation

August 30, 2014 11:29 a.m.

Was talking about this with a buddy of mine and he suggested it is A. A permanent with morph, so it would never be hardcast. or B. Some sort of Death Cloud variant, perhaps one-sided or C. one Jp3ngu1nb0y would love, Entreat the Demons

August 30, 2014 11:32 a.m.

I think it's a creature... that does something to benefit creatures of another color, hence "Make a splash" referring to adding a color to MBD, or it is a "Wave" effect ie. Killing Wave . It could even be a mass recursion effect.

August 30, 2014 11:45 a.m.

jr92_2000 says... #12

@Gidgetimer I'm not even sure that's strong enough. Random discard on turn 6 (at the absolute earliest) doesn't seem to justify the cost.

If it's meant to be hard cast, it better be one hell of a spell.

erabel says... #13

My guess is that this is a Morph card of some sort. The XXBBBB is either its normal cost and the Morph is more reasonable and splashable, or the normal cost is reasonable, but you get a huge effect if you can unmorph it for XXBBBB.

Search your library for any number of cards that cost X and put them into your hand, then shuffle your library.

August 30, 2014 4:03 p.m.

HavokX says... #22

You may put up to X creature cards from your hand, graveyard, and library on the battlefield.

August 30, 2014 4:09 p.m.

That card would cost XXBBUG

August 30, 2014 4:16 p.m.

spyroswiz says... #24

Maybe a similar card to Death Cloud . That would be insane with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and devotion!

August 30, 2014 4:25 p.m.

derKochXXL says... #25

Just a general thought, as I assume this is going to be a morph creature. But how awesome would off colour morph activation be? (Fun fact: In German "Kot" is a word for feces.)

August 30, 2014 6:41 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #26

We have no idea what it actually is but I think BlastercoolWeird probably has it. Some type of effect where target opponent discards x cards, sacrifices x lands and x creatures, and loses x life. A one sided Death Cloud

August 30, 2014 7:51 p.m.

SimicPower says... #27

When I think for some reason I think of some Descent into Madness variant.

We should get something big, though. Remember, the last time quadruple black was in a mana cost, we got Griselbrand . This should be... exciting.

August 30, 2014 7:51 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #28

PAX spoilers are up. One of the mechanics is delve (Tombstalker ). Perhaps it has delve?

August 30, 2014 10:19 p.m.

SimicPower says... #29

Probably will have Delve.

August 31, 2014 2:23 a.m.

Irishduce2 says... #30

How about delve...? Like give all creatures -x/-x? It would technically be the four mana sweeper people wanted!

August 31, 2014 10:22 a.m.

So I reread the hint and I think we are misinterpreting him. He has the cost going downward, not from left to right, as well as the X's being listed first. This leads me to believe that it has abilities ordering 2 X abilities and 4 Black abilities. Possibly a black Morphling or a Trading Post -esque artifact?

August 31, 2014 noon

what?

it's absolutely going left to right like a mana cost.

August 31, 2014 12:16 p.m.
August 31, 2014 12:22 p.m.

Sorry, the mobile client has them going down. but the weird order still has me in the same boat, as well as the spacing

TheRedDude says... #37

OK, id like to say that since Stoddard said despite its pretty steep cost it would make a splash. This most likely means its meant to be hard cast, or he wouldn't have said despite it.

August 31, 2014 8:48 p.m.

idk when Wizard drops hints it's often worded in a way that will turn heads, because obviously they want to build hype. Theros had a similar hint which was 'a creature that, when it deals combat damage give you the effect of one of the power nine,' they were hinting about Medomai the Ageless a card that didn't actually do a ton in anything competitive, but I know I and a few others were excited about it. In this case the interest is generated by hinting at a clearly ludicrously expensive card that is apparently still good enough for standard.

I imagine the high casting cost will HAVE to be mitigated somehow because few X cost effects are worth playing 6+ mana for in standard.

August 31, 2014 9:10 p.m.

cr14mson says... #40

obviously a black Storm Crow !

August 31, 2014 9:40 p.m.

TheGamer says... #41

Eek... Dat cost dough. I feel it'll be some weird board wipe that gives you life or card advantage or something great. Or less it'll probably be some bulk rare no one will ever take a second glance at.

Empty the PitsXXBBBBInstantDelve (Each card you exile from your graveyard while casting this spell pays for 1.)

Put X 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens onto the battlefield tapped. The Sultai would rebuild the empire on the backs of the dead.

Combine this with Necromancer's Stockpile ...maybe I'll play Zombies post rotation?

Well, that wasnt what i expected.

September 5, 2014 1:16 p.m.

TheRedDude says... #46

most likely gonna be t8-9 a few zombies. isn't a good wincon

September 5, 2014 3:32 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #47

That is fucking atrocious. So you pay 8 for 2 2/2 zombies, or to make it cost effective you should be paying 4 so you need to exile like 4 things. That's feasibly. On its own it's crap. If you can support it with delve then it's playable. Instant speed is good.

September 5, 2014 3:33 p.m.

Caes says... #48

With all the support delve is getting, this card is more than capable of ending the game easily. Consider the following cards:

Jace, the Living Guildpact

Sultai Ascendancy

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant

Commune with the Gods

See the Unwritten

Bitter Revelation

...and more help to fill the graveyard for this spell.

September 5, 2014 3:49 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #49

It's not that fast though. Most of them are 3 or 4 drops that do a card or two a turn. In order to really impact the board you're going to want a lot of zombies - and that means you're going to want a lot of cards. Also remember that delve can't help with the really absurd BBBB casting cost.

September 5, 2014 4:06 p.m.

NixTheThird says... #50

I think the speed of the wincon will come down to if you can stack the multiple graveyard filling effects all at once rather than individual cards being fast or slow. With all the control that Sultai will have (Hero's Downfall , Sultai Charm , Negate , Bile Blight , etc) you will have some time to make the game go long and sit on an asencency, sidisi or jace for a couple turns. All the time you'll probably be pecking away at their health because you'll be killing their creatures and finding openings for Courser of Kruphix or sidisi. With all that said, you won't only have 4 things to get rid of in the grave when you crack this on turn 8-9 (if that's when you decide to hit them) because of all the control cards plus self milling you've been doing.

It isn't an Elspeth level finisher by faaaaar, but it still has potential. Frankly I think its absolutely correct to be more worried that the BBBB will hold it back more than anything else. But again, in a control scheme deck, I think it can work.
