Creature that can reanimate others while being in a graveyard

Commander Deck Help forum

Hello everyone!

I'm currently tuning my EDH Challenge: Feed the Grimgrin!. The deck is a weird mix of combo and reanimation and winnig frequently involves going through some solitaire-ish turns. During testing I often find myself stuck in a situation where I need a creature that, while in a graveyard, can reanimate other creatures.

I tried searching Gatherer with so many different criterias, but the closest I could get was Soul of Innistrad's second ability (which is expensive and puts the creatures into hand, not play).

I have a strong feeling that no such card exists, but I will give it a last try and ask here: Is there a creature card that can reanimate other creatures from graveyard to play, while being in the graveyard itself?

There isn't and thankfully so. This would be too good. There are a lot of creatures that can self-reanimate like say Dread Wanderer, but none that reanimate others while dead.

Are you looking for creature cards that do what Rise from the Grave then I think there are a few Demon of Dark Schemes Geth, Lord of the Vault

I think the rest are tapped type Gravespawn Sovereign and Agadeem Occultist

This is the only thing I could find but there may be some more

you could try Tortured Existence as a way to discard creatures and Raise Dead other creatures...

there is Prized Amalgam but its kinda slow for the combo

The best option would be something that brings itself back but if you tell us the combo maybe we can help with a work around.

self-reanimate + Dread Return + Gravespawn Sovereign or other similar piece is ok.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It confirmed what I was worried about. I now understand that (as Boza said) such card would probably be too good and rightfully doesn't exist.

Specifically, I was looking for something that I would have the option to Buried Alive or Corpse Connoisseur for and then use it to bring back something else. Imagine magical christmas land where there is a Rooftop Storm in play and you Buried Alive for Gravecrawler, Blood Artist and the missing creature (to reanimate Blood Artist), cast the commander Grimgrin, Corpse-Born and kill everyone on the spot. I will have to stick with Entomb for Dread Return in this case.

Other than that I'm aware of all the suggestions you all mentioned. Currently using the most common reanimation spells (Reanimate, Animate Dead, Necromancy...) with looters, Liliana of the Veil discard or above mentioned grave tutors to get creatures into graveyard.

What you need is a two creature combo that you can use to reanimate from the graveyard. For example, if you have Buried Alive, you can bury Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Walking Ballista and use two reanimation effects to bring them both in. Since Grimgrin is a free sac outlet, this also leads to a lot of combos - grimgrin + Blood Artist + Gravecrawler + Carnival of Souls is just one example.

Thanks! That two creature combo looks appealing and I will definitely playtest that since I'm already playing Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. I've also realised that replacing Walking Ballista with Triskelion doesn't require Grimgrin to go infinite (if I'm not mistaken).

Also, didn't really know Carnival of Souls existed! Will have my eye on that since it could be a nice alternative for Rooftop Storm combos.

Yes, triskellion negates the need for Grimgrin, just make sure to use the last counter to kill triskellion. However, you can use Blood Artist effects as well with Walking Ballista, just use the counter from undying to kill the ballista.

Other cards to consider are Palinchron which will generate infinite mana with Grimgrin and Mikaeus, any persist creature will work for infinite triggers. Puppeteer Clique is particularly awesome, since you can reanimate your opponent's graveyards and simply kill them with their own creatures.
