Modern FNM 3-1! —Aug. 15, 2014

It was a smaller crowd, so fewer Swiss rounds. Lots of good players, though.

Match 1, Splinter Twin 2-1:

Cool guy who literally sleeved this deck up prior to the tourney. In fact, he finished sleeving as the match began. First game I quickly reduced him to zero. I kept a one land hand with several one drops and drew into land to be able to cast Eidolon and friends. Second game he Twinned out at 4 life. My opening hand had. Third game was grindy. He upped his defensive game and stole my Eidolon with Veldaken Shackles. I was able to stick Torpor Orb second turn, which inevitably won me the match. Was able to burn and lock him out with Orb and Eidolon.

Match 2, Affinity 1-2:

My good friend PhyrexianPlague piloted this deck. The night before, we playtested and I swept the match quite handily. This match, however, was quite close. Game one I stomped him pretty hard. Game two he had a Vault Skirge and Arcbound Ravager on the board, and I zero removal. He sacced a bunch of stuff to Ravager, the Ravager to itself, making the Skirge a 6/6 Flying Lifelink to block my attack. I Skullcracked in response, but didn't draw into an answer. He won with 5 life on the table, I believe. Game three was a lot closer. I removed his early threats, including a Spellskite and Vault Skirge, then had him below 10 life. I had a lone Guide left that was ticking his total away like a boss, after he had removed everything else with Galvanic Blast. We both were top decking. Dude had 3 Cranial Plating on the board. He Negated a top draw Flames of the Blood Hand, dropped an Ornithopter, and passed. I counted 18 damage once Orny was equipped, buying me one turn, as I was at 20. I swung, had him at five life and dropped Vexing Devil, which stuck. He dropped a Mox Opal, upping his artifact count, and swung with Orny for 21. I was one card away from a Shatterstorm... Good game!

Match 3, G/R Ramp 2-0:

I was on the play with two lands, Eidolon, and some burn in hand. I dropped a Mountain and passed, killing his first turn Arbor Elf. Eidolon stuck and I passed. He shocked himself for a Farseek, then I swung with Eidolon and played Devil, which he took 4 for. I ended the game quickly, before he could stick a beasty. Game two went very much the same. I gave the good natured kid some constructive advice on his deck. While shuffling before the first game he caught glimpse of a Guide and exclaimed loudly, "Oh HELL no! You're playing Burn?!?!" I replied, "I most definitley am not playing Burn..." After the first turn I said, "I'm playing Red Deck Wins; there's a slight difference." Lol he got a kick out of that.

Match 4, B/W Tokens, 2-0:

By now everyone in Realms Games knew what I was playing as my last opponent was quite loud... This kid mentioned, "Usually I have a good matchup against RDW, but I dunno about your deck." I noted a Tidehollow Sculler in his sideboard he had showing and guessed correctly he was playing B/W Tokens. 'Twas a race.

I ended the first game quickly with Guide, double Ball Lightnings (lucky opening hand with two lands, top drew Mountain), and some burn. Game two he opened with a tapped Godless Shrine, I opened with Guide and swung for two. He played Runed Halo, naming Guide. I played Eidolon and passed. Eidolon saw a Path to Exile, he took two, and passed. I burned him, laid a Lavamancer, passed. He stuck a Pack Rat, passed. I kept a Bolt handy and laid Lavamancer. I attacked, he made a copy of Pack Rat, blocked, I Bolted in response. He played Spectral Procession, passed. I drew Arid Mesa, passed. He swung with his 3 1/1s, triggered Vault of the Archangel. I activated Lavamancer, killing one. Debated on killing another with a Bolt, but kept it. He gained two life. I sacced Mesa, bolted him at EOT. I drew Skullcrack, played it, activated Lavamancer, and swung with the other for game. Phew!

I came in 4th but was bumped to 5th due to an 8Rack pilot going 3-0 and dropping for some baby mama drama. I was given $6 store credit and picked up a Voice of Resurgence. Great time had!

Eidolon of the Great Revel was the MVP for sure. I think I'll be making some changes, though.

Why do you run fetches in a mono-colored deck? It is basically tap pay 1 life search your library for a basic mountain?

I listed my reasoning in the description for running fetches...

I, along with other competitive RDW lists, run fetches for a few reasons:

  1. Grim Lavamancer fuel and to trigger Landfall on the opponent's turn for Searing Blaze

  2. A shuffle

  3. Deck thinning. Mathematically, the effect is minute, but it does prove effective in grindy matches

I get that jazz but the other competitive rdw lists that run fetches are typically dega boros or rakdos.

instead of the Flames of the Blood Hand and Searing Blaze I would use 4 Browbeat

August 13, 2014 1:32 p.m.

I wouldn't use Browbeat , as it's a horrible card. It's good at first glance, however you're giving the opponent the best option, thus it never does what you want it to do. For card draw I use Reforge the Soul , which has less of a drawback. I've tested Browbeat extensively and it just doesn't work.

Flames of the Blood Hand and Searing Blaze are rather necessary in my meta. Flames assists with the Lifegain that is popular and Blaze is a great 2 for 1 removal spell that I can trigger on the OP turn w fetches.
