Modern FNM I went 4-1!!! —May 17, 2014

I'm pleased with how this deck performed. I used another list. I've made changes since. Lots of people, so five rounds of Swiss.

Match One:

I played an odd Selesnya ramp home brew. I swept the match. It was relatively easy and I closed both games by turn four or five. I have him lots of feedback and encouraged him to play with an Elves list. 1-0

Match Two:

I played against an Orzhov Lifelink/Extort deck. This was my roughest matchup. Even with Skullcrack game one, I was unable to close the game. I ran out of gas and top decked Mountains. Game two I sided in Everlasting Torment and Slagstorm. I didn't see them. In retrospect, I should've taken a mulligan or two until I found Everlasting Torment. I also had the opportunity to Lightning Bolt a Trained Caracal in response to an enchantment buff. That and not getting Torment cost me the match. 1-1

Match Three:

I played against a young gal fairly new to MtG. She was in high school yet. She played an interesting Simic Evolve deck. She was pretty cool to play against. I actually felt kinda bad for sweeping the match. I did give her lots of encouragement and constructive criticism, though. 2-1

Match Four:

This guy had a Dimir Standard Mill deck that would've been FANTASTIC in Standard. But I also swept that match. I have him some tips and card suggestions (even showing him my Modern Esper Mill list) that I hope encouraged him some. I'm a nice Spike... 3-1

Match Five: The Final Countdown! Haha. Yeah, so I played against Living End, which is quite humorous as I play tested this deck against the friend who accompanied me, who has Living End. Anywho my opponent, Chad, was a super cool, fun guy. He listed all the phases of his turn, "Upkeep, Untap, Draw..." which I joked with him about. He plays lots of MTGO.

He was on the play the first game, dropped a land, and passed the turn. I dropped a Mountain, Goblin Guide, and swung for two. He cycled at the EOT, discarded Faerie Macabre with zero targets, then played his turn. He dropped and cracked a fetch, getting a basic land, exiled Simian Spirit Guide, then played a Cascade spell into Living End, then passed. I dropped a land into two Rift Bolt, then passed. He missed his land drop and swung in for five, then passed. Rift Bolt hit for six, I dropped a land, Ball Lightning, and Lightning Bolt, ending the game I believe. He may have cycled a Street Wraith at some point.

Game two I sided in Everlasting Torment. He did not have Spike Feeder and mulliganed to four. Long story short he cascaded Living End turn three, pulling out some hefty bodies. I was able to bring back Vexing Devil, swing next turn after a bunch of burn, and won with Brimstone Volley. 4-1

I had an absolute blast, met some great people, and ended up 5th place. I scored a Maelstrom Pulse with store credit. Groovy! There was a R/G Tron that drew for first. Melira Pod came in 4th. By buddy's Affinity deck placed 3rd. Knowing this, I need to main and side more answers to life gain, as I can't out tempo it. Kitchen Finks and Thragtusk are definitely a thing. I'll be making some changes soon!

Blizzicane says... #3

Since your splashing white I would recommend for you to run Boros Charm and Lightning Helix as Boros Charm is a one sided Flame Rift and Lightning Helix can potentially save you while your top decking and is great versus mirror matches and other aggro. I also recommend Searing Blaze as the opportunity to hit them two for one is too good to pass off in modern, in legacy Searing Blaze is not needed as much because burn in legacy is so much faster due to cards like Chain Lightning . Shard Volley is something else to consider personally in my modern RDW I don't run it because I already have cards like Boros Charm and Bump in the Night in potential spots but it is a great card.

Now for cards I would probably consider removing:

Brimstone Volley is consider a non efficient card as it costs three mana and won't always trigger because as a burn deck your main goal is to damage the opponent not their creatures and if you waste your burn spell towards their creatures then that is less damage to kill them so I would remove it.

You should not use Reforge the Soul for reasons alphine stated in your deck help post and because if you don't get to use its miracle cost or if its in your opening hand its a dead card and your potentially refilling your opponent's hand to if they are running some form of aggro.

Figure of Destiny is way too slow for this deck as he is not packing haste or some form of damage, while he is great as a mana sink he can be even more easily answered than Ball Lightning which I already believe is not worth the mana investment because it will come down later when the opponent will probably now have some form of removal by now if they didn't already have any.

Well that is all the input I have for this deck. :3

I originally had Boros Charm included and have yet to acquire Lightning Helix . With only one Sacred Foundry that I have, I found it to be rather inconsistent. I have actually considered splashing for Bump in the Night , adding a few more fetches, and Blood Crypt though. That may make Searing Blaze worthwhile.

I do like the idea of Searing Blood to kill a dork, Bob, or whatever with 2 toughness and the 3 to the dome. I like the 2 for 1 effect. Seems more consistent than Searing Blaze .

Brimstone Volley so far in testing has been a beast. With Vexing Devil , Keldon Marauders , and even a turn 6 Ball Lightning in a grindy match, I'm guaranteed the Morbid trigger. I'm considering cutting one in favor of the aforementioned cards, though.

Figure of Destiny is decent, and may be replaced with more burn. In testing, he's been a 4/4 at best, but something that eats removal. I go back and forth about Ball Lightning . If unanswered, he's huge. If the opponent catches on or has some First Strike tech, he often gets sided out. Tomorrow night will be a true test... (Insert suspenseful music here)

snowstorm much appreciated feedback!!!
