2nd Place at first tournament —March 5, 2017

First Frontier tournament this deck came second.

It worked exactly as I wanted it to.

Match report to follow.

Lookin' good! I've never played Frontier before, how is it?

They are starting it up at my LGS so I don't know, yet.

I'm just adjusting some old decks I used to love to play.

My guess is that the format will be dominated by CoCo, seeing that the top-rated Frontier deck on this site is CoCo Elves.

Ah so CoCo strikes again...

Fuck CoCo's price tag. ;) Ensoul Artifact is OP in my opinion. 5/5 for 2 mana? Yes please! Deck is great as usual, +1

A version of this deck worked very well for me during the Origins season.

I was sceptical about whether I could replicate the lightning in a bottle for Frontier ... and initial testing suggests that I can!

The deck is extremely Aggro, but can also hold Opponent threats off with a few counter spells and Enchantments.

Have you considered using inventors goggle's, the auto equip to an artificer would help keep the whirler rogue alive.

That's a wee bit too situational, I'm afraid.

This deck has a very focused vision of what it wants to achieve and that doesn't fit.

This looks great. A budget Frontier deck I can get behind. I wanted to make a frontier deck around thopters and Tezzeret the Schemer. Right now I just have my Humans Tribal frontier deck but I really enjoy the format. +1 from me.

have you thought about metallic rebuke?

February 19, 2017 4:55 p.m.

Argy says... #11

Uri Hangarback Walker doesn't suit my play style.

tehe10293847 Metallic Rebuke is not as useful as the Counter spells I already have, imo.

One other thing.

With so many copies of Declaration in Stone in my local meta, Hangarback Walker is next to useles.

I don't know howmuch a budget you are on or if you already have this in mind, but maybe Disallow instead of Scatter to the Winds

February 21, 2017 11:38 a.m.

Argy says... #14

TheRedeemed I think you might have missed this, from the "Mechanics" part of my Description:

"If timed right Scatter to the Winds can throw three +1/+1 Counters on a Darksteel Citadel that has been Ensouled, making an Indestructible 8/8."

I did miss that. That is a good idea

Hope of Ghirapur, Metallic Rebuke, Stubborn Denial, Hangarback Walker? Hope gives you another turn 1 play to turn into a turn 2 5/5 flyer, and rebuke and stubborn are strong counterspells in this deck. Hangarback gives you resiliency to removal, and gives you free wins against certain decks.

I've addressed Hangarback Walker above. Too many people play Declaration in Stone in my local meta.

I don't like the limits on Stubborn Denial.

Hope of Ghirapur would probably need to take the place of Gudul Lurker. If it doesn't end up being Ensouled it feels like a wasted Creature.

I'll have a play around with Metallic Rebuke to see what I think of it. I usually cast Clash of Wills on Turn 2 or 3 to make my Opponent lose tempo. Not sure if this will always be ready to cast then.

WizardLogic good call on Metallic Rebuke.

I've tested it and you're right, in this deck it is very strong.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually, after some real world testing tonight, I'm going back to Clash of Wills.

It allows me to stop some Turn 2 plays of my Opponent, which Metallic Rebuke does not.

I am also considering putting Frost Walker back in.

The early big damage might be important.

Took Orbs of Warding out of the Sideboard and replaced it with Reality Shift.

With stuff like Snek Deck sometimes I need to get rid of a card that I miss Countering, or that Claustrophobia doesn't effectively nerf.

I feel that an Ensoul build in frontier can do so much more with more than one color. But, if this is working well for you... +1 (and this deck is 23 dollars, so it has that going for it too).

February 25, 2017 8:19 a.m.

Argy says... #23

Yeah Bovine073 I've been considering adding

Gonna wait first to see how this plays irl.

Our LGS has yet to run its first Frontier day.

The worst matchup for this deck is Dark Jeskai Control.

Tbh this would probably need more Control cards to beat that, which already has.

I know you dislike the idea of Hangarback Walker, but it honestly poops on control decks. Resolving it on turn 2 and forcing them to commit a removal spell instead of building up card advantage is good tempo swing, and if they don't bother popping it early the 2-3 thopters it makes are great against their planeswalkers or big targeted removal spells, and are also resilient to sacrifice effects. Hope of Ghirapur is also good against control shells, as they are forced to kill it or let you sac it for value and stop them for a turn cycle. Phyrexian Revoker can be used to shut down pesky artifacts or planeswalkers, and they are forced to commit a removal spell for it. Smuggler's Copter is also quite good, it dodges sorcery speed removal, loves wearing ensoul or carrying a sword, and provides you a way to ditch dead draws and turn them into real cards.

If Jeskai Black is proving to be dominant in your meta, it could also be worth it to include creatures that generate incremental value, or have built in resiliency, such as Aether Swooper, Bastion Inventor, Trophy Mage, Glint-Nest Crane, Filigree Familiar, Padeem, Consul of Innovation, Quicksmith Spy, and Treasure Keeper.

If all else fails, fight them over spells resolving with Unsubstantiate, Negate, Metallic Rebuke, Disallow, and Dispel.

Hope brainstorming goes well, good luck beating Jeskai Black!

Argy says... #25

I didn't say that Jeskai Black is dominant in my local meta. I just said it is this deck's worst matchup.

As I said, my LGS hasn't run its first Frontier day yet.

I've been playing around with the thought of Smuggler's Copter for a while. I might try it instead of Thopter Spy Network, which is often a dead draw in my hand.
