Arcane Teachings Discussion

Atrabilogie on He's A Land Eater - Under $20 land *exile* deck

It's a really good deck but as it has been said, it struggles a lot against aggro and multicolored decks.

I really think a red splash with Ancient Grudge is kind of inevitable. You wouldn't especially need expensive dual lands as outside of Splinter all spells require only one colored mana (and the deck has 8 mana elves)

Blanchwood Armor would obviously be switched with Arcane Teachings, Boar Umbra or Elephant Guide IMO.

Arcane Teachings, and Burning Anger both seem kinda janky but fun.

What about the old classic Viridian Longbow?

It's probably worth it to add red for Power of Fire, Fire Whip, Lightning Prowess or Arcane Teachings.

This deck is dope. I don't have any super-powerful suggestions but I can think of a couple fun ones that might have a place in your meta, depending on what it is like.

If you're the only one really running a tribal theme (beasts/elves from the looks of things), you might be able to make use of Harsh Mercy, if not to watch your opponents squirm as they decide what to give-up, it can at least make for some fun politics as people declare creature-types of their allies to try and save them. It's a bit weak in that it obviously won't hit the best stuff on the table most of the time, but it's super cheap at only and makes for fun diplomacy.

If you find yourself regularly outnumbered, you could try out Pulse of the Tangle, as it can get more beasts out onto the battlefield for your other synergies while potentially allowing for some great card-mileage.

If you've ever been at the receiving end of a Blasphemous Act, it could be fun to include a Tephraderm into your creature roster. Fun as it is on its own, if you're feeling particularly devilish you could try out a fun little combo using Tephraderm, Darksteel Plate, Druid's Call, and a 'ping' granting ability like Viridian Longbow or Arcane Teachings. Just make sure you have a sac outlet to break the infinite loop! Enjoy your unending tide of squirrels.

Also, consider Totem Speaker for long games.

Anyway, just my two-cents. Keeping reppin' the beasts. +1

UniqueUserID on Combat damage replacement effects interactions!

I was trying to make the ever so useless Silkenfist Fighter playable. However now I have a lot of questions regarding Combat Damage effects....

1) Reconnaissance allows you remove a creature from combat. If Laccolith Grunt was blocked does it ALSO remove his damage effect too?

2) From what I read Combat Damage is strictly the damage from attackers and blockers in the Combat damage step. So you cannot use Curse of Stalked Prey and Arcane Teachings to "ping" damage to get the bonus since it does not count.

3) Is this following scenario correct? I have a Silkenfist Fighter with Arcane Teachings attached. I also control Reconnaissance and Always Watching . Can I declare attackers, then ping for 1 damage. Then if blocked Silkenfist Fighter untaps, so I can ping for another 1 damage. Here I can continue to attack OR withdraw from combat with Reconnaissance and ping for the 3rd and final time. Is this correct?

Thank you for reading!
