Rank the Dual Lands

When M13, Innistrad, and Ravnica blocks were in standard we had the best duel lands to play with since Revised. M14 has no duel lands, Shock lands will rotate out, and Theros duel lands (which aren't bad) aren't as good. Which duel lands do you wish would always be around? Here is how I rank them.

  1. Shock lands Overgrown Tomb
  2. M10 land & Innistrad lands Sunpetal Grove
  3. Onslaught & Zendikar fetch lands Arid Mesa
  4. Nimbus Maze Futuresight
  5. Futuresight & Shadowmoor filters Graven Cairns
  6. Scars of Mirrodin tap lands Copperline Gorge
  7. Scry lands Temple of Silence

I left out the original duel lands because they are on the reserve list...unless you play online. I stopped at 7 because the remaining duel lands seemed to be about equal; pain lands vs life lands or purely situational like tribal lands and gates.

I would say fetch lands are first and shock lands are second as fetch lands are mostly played in any deck that can run them even some mono-color decks plus they can search for shock lands as well but I can see some people choosing shock lands first. But they are definitely higher than M10 Lands as those see much less play but they are still great lands.

I would go even farther than Snowstorm and say that fetches are better than the original ABRU duals. Shuffle effect at no mana cost, can't be hit by Wasteland , extra landfall triggers, can be used with graveyard recursion to ensure land drops each turn...the list goes on. ABRU duals are just convenient, but don't have anywhere near fetch lands' synergy.

As far as ranking them goes, my top 10 would be:

1) Fetchlands (Polluted Delta , Arid Mesa )
2) Alpha/Beta/Unlimited/Revised Duals (Tundra , Bayou )
3) Shocklands (Godless Shrine , Breeding Pool )
4) Buddy Lands (Rootbound Crag , Sulfur Falls )
5) Man Lands (Celestial Colonnade , Lavaclaw Reaches )
6) Grove of the Burnwillows
7) Pain Lands (Sulfurous Springs , Brushland )
8) Filter Lands (Fire-Lit Thicket , Cascade Bluffs )
9) Fast Lands (Darkslick Shores , Razorverge Thicket )
10) Tribal Lands (Auntie's Hovel , Murmuring Bosk )

Everytime I read someone type "duel lands" I picture two lands back to back walking 10 paces and then turning and firing. Lol

But all kidding aside I like this post. The fetches also get my vote. The are always useful all the time no matter what. Free shuffle? Sweet. Go get a land that produces 2 colors of mana? Good deal.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks for getting my brai. Working this early solkanarswampking. (It's 6 am for me right now)

The original "duel land": Arena .

Auntie's Hovel and Murmuring Bosk are NOT part of the same cycle. They tap for different amounts of mana (2 and 3 colors), bosk is also a painland, bosk is also a forest, so it can be searched for via Misty Rainforest , Verdant Catacombs , etc.

My rating would be1. ABUR duals2. fetchlands3. shocklands4. Grove of the Burnwillows 5. checklands6. fastlands7. painlands8. manlands9. scrylands10. refuges

Ha I can't believe I type duel instead of dual every time. Good point about fetch lands snowstorm, I forgot about fetch lands importance for some mono color decks, I actually looked at a mono red goblin deck on here the other day that ran 8 fetch lands. At first I didn't understand why until it hit me, pay 1 life to get 2 lands out of your deck so you're drawing more spells. Ingenious.

I fixed the title because it was hurting me.

1.Polluted Delta since it fetches blue, and most decks I run, black grabs bayou
2.Scalding Tarn over Misty Rainforest only bc more decks running UR than UG, personally use misty more
3.River of Tears bc of the art lol
4. Shocks all have there moments but I think Stomping Ground or Overgrown Tomb
5. Isolated Chapel

Fetches are #1 and will probably be reprinted (all of them) beginning this year. If not, WotC can kiss goodbye to the Modern crowd they're trying to grow. Having only half a set of the best dual lands available to a format is stupid.

I hope they get around to doing future sight, but in the present. I missed that set. But seems uber cool.

For me, I would go with:

-Shock lands

-Check Lands

-Pain Lands

-Man lands

-Fast lands

Granted, I play Tempo and believe that untapped lands are the best things ever, so I'm only slightly biased...

Also, I personally hate fetch lands. They absolutely wrecked the modern format. Every top deck has the same mana base, decks are warped around them, and if you don't have them, your deck is terrible and you're just bad at Magic. Patrick Sullivan has an excellent spiel on why fetch lands are terrible, for anyone interested.

But yeah, I'm also in that boat of 'I hope Nimbus Maze lands become a thing soon'.

ThatBlueMage, how did the fetches ruin Modern? I agree that they're unbalanced until they're all reprinted in standard, but they certainly haven't wrecked the format. There are top tier Modern decks that don't use fetches. Merfolk is really strong right now, and has been Top 8-ing a lot recently. Affinity is also strong.

Yeah, the fetches are expensive, but Modern is hardly a budget format. And compared to 'Goyf and Bob, they aren't bad at all.

From best to worst, based on how I seem to evaluate their worth at any given time:

  1. Dual Lands I can't afford and don't own
  2. Dual Lands I couldn't afford previously but somehow was able to budget for but don't own
  3. Dual Lands I can afford normally but don't own
  4. Dual Lands I own that aren't in my deck
  5. Dual Lands in my deck and currently in my library
  6. Dual Lands in my hand or graveyard
  7. Dual Lands in play under my control, untapped
  8. Dual Lands in play under my control, tapped

LOL nobu_the_bard. What about dual lands you paid a bunch of money for, rotated out of Standard, and are now worthless?

January 24, 2014 12:47 p.m.

sylvannos says... #19

@OpenFire: But they are in the same cycle. Murmuring Bosk and Primal Beyond are just farther along in the cycle. The mechanic is the same, reveal a tribal card or the land comes into play tapped. Murmuring Bosk is just the best one. It'd be similar to if there was an ABUR "dual" land that was something like a Forest Swamp Plains. We'd still include it in the list of ABUR duals if it was printed in Alpha, but recognize it as the best "dual" land.
