Most Missed Trigger?

General forum

I'm only familiar with Standard (And a little EDH) but DAMN IT ALL I swear I will always forget the lifegain trigger off of Soldier of the Pantheon . Seriously. And I know I'm not the only person out there to do it. I've had it done by opponents too.

What's the deal? Why is it that I and no one can seem to remember that part? Can you all think of any other often missed triggers like this?

i've definitely done it with Essence Warden .

Opponents' creatures to a soul sisters player. They always forget opposing creatures.

I also forget that trigger but with the soul sisters in a couple of my EDH decks. Soul's Attendant and Soul Warden . Also in my vamp edh i forget about Blood Seeker 's trigger.

I've missed a lot of Horizon Chimera and Oloro, Ageless Ascetic . Same with Soldier of the Pantheon .

I got to turn 6 and realized I hadn't gained any life with Oloro yet..

Rhystic Study probably has the most-missed trigger in all of Magic. And missing that trigger sucks so hard.

January 14, 2014 10:12 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #8

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic lifegain triggers are the worst. I've remembered the trigger like halfway through my turn once. It's definitely a feel bad.

Blizzicane says... #9

One trigger I always would forget was Oloro, Ageless Ascetic when I was playing with someone's EDH deck I would always forget to gain life at the beginning of each upkeep because I am not use to commanders actually doing stuff in the commander zone and it seem the opponent I was playing would forget now and then to. XD

Spootyone says... #10

I can imagine soul sisters has a ton of missed triggers.

And Epochalyptik, you're so right. One of my friends runs Rhystic Study in EDH and it usually takes us a good 5 or so turns before we actually get used to it...every...time...

January 14, 2014 10:15 p.m.

Spootyone says... #11

It's funny so many are mentioning Oloro because i have another friend who runs him and he just never misses that trigger. I wish he would haha.

January 14, 2014 10:16 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #12

You don't run it for the trigger. You are running it because it is an aggressive creature with protection from half the format. You don't have the trigger firmly in your mind because you don't plan the use of the card around that ability.

I miss the life gain trigger on Oloro, Ageless Ascetic in my EDH deck with him as the commander all of the time for that reason. I never miss his draw trigger, nor do I ever miss a trigger on either of the soul sisters. This shows that its not that I miss life gain triggers, I simply miss triggers when it's not the main purpose of me running the card.

Wow I just realized that most of these post are base on lifegain triggers. XD

Desecration Demon .

People either just expect you to know what it does and act accordingly (without actually announcing the trigger), or forget to announce the trigger all the time.

You figure with how prominent he is in standard right now that people would learn how to play with him, but my 4th round win last friday says a bit different. ;D

(He missed announcing 6 consecutive triggers, and got DQ'd for improper play. I wasn't particularly proud of calling the judge here, but I get a bit tired of being the nice guy sometimes.)

life gain in Time to Feed , my friend and I missed this a couple of times. But only because he had a lot of "fight target creature" spells/abilities in that deck

Gidgetimer says... #16

Oddly enough my playgroup also never misses a Rhystic Study trigger.

January 14, 2014 10:20 p.m.

Spootyone says... #17

Lol see? Take note, new players! Life is so irrelevant that you will actually miss triggers!

Maybe it's just me but facing down a turn 4 6/6 flyer has always allowed me to remember his trigger haha.

It's probably just me because I don't know the value of it, but a great deal of the time I miss my Dark Confidant 's trigger and lose on their next turn. What's usually on the top of the deck? Ancient Grudge . What matchup do I usually play against? Affinity. GRRRR

Well I might have 1 or 2 Consuming Aberration and When I counter someone else's spell I forget to trigger his ability. And that just sux so bad

January 14, 2014 11:15 p.m.

Arorsthrar says... #22

I'd have to say the most missed trigger is the untap step XD. So many people forget to untap all their permanents before they draw. Otherwise I'd have to say Young Pyromancer and heroic triggers WHEN the spell is countered (since heroic is still triggered). Otherwise I'd have to say Soldier of the Pantheon .

Ichorid I always forget it's during the upkeep. So many dredge games lost because I just needed that one creature lol

January 15, 2014 1:05 a.m.

Spootyone says... #26

Actually, that reminds me: Mana Vault . I always forget the untap portion can only happen during upkeep, so I tend to untap, draw a card, curse at myself, and then repeat the same madness forever...

January 15, 2014 1:08 a.m.

My playgroup misses all sort of triggers, I'm usually the resident nice guy constantly reminding everyone of their triggers. Sometimes it gets tiresome, but I'd rather not win a casual match due to missing important triggers that will eventually lead to them losing.

January 16, 2014 7:02 a.m.

Dredge Triggers! I have a modern Jundvine list (My Vines Bring All The Zombies To The Yard) and my graveyard gets so big sometimes I forget Dredge triggers and I want to die.

January 16, 2014 7:41 a.m.

Dalektable says... #29

I definitely have to agree with Soldier of the Pantheon . I play white weenies and i can't tell you how many times i have forgotten that trigger.

January 16, 2014 8:12 a.m.

CharmedGeek says... #30

Not a trigger as such, but I keep forgetting that some activated abilities can be used multiple times, such as on Zombie Infestation . There's a few games which I could have won had I remembered that!

I see Thassa, God of the Sea missed more times. That and the life gain from Scavenging Ooze

About Rhystic Study ...

Is this trigger not your opponents trigger?

It should technically go - You cast a spell - They announce trigger - You decide to pay or not pay - If you do not pay, they decide to draw or not draw.

If you/they miss it, they do not automatically get to draw. They have to announce the trigger, and let you decide if you want to pay.

All too often, I've seen people cast a creature, and later in the turn the controller of Rhystic Study ask if they paid the extra 1... when the caster says no, the player draws a card.

But if the trigger was missed, they should not get the card... and if they want to 'turn-back' to the time it should have triggered, the caster should be allowed to pay the 1.

....or am I missing something?

January 16, 2014 12:54 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #34

Rayenous: You are correct, if the trigger was missed the 2 options are: Put the trigger on the stack allowing the opponents to pay the 1 to prevent the draw if you are being nice to the Rhystic Study controller; or say tough luck they missed the trigger.

CW says... #35

for me its Thassa, God of the Sea s upkeep scry, but in my experience every green duelist I play against always forgets Witchstalker s +1+1 counter trigger every time I counter something or draw at the end of their turn with a rev or something

January 16, 2014 4:18 p.m.

acbooster says... #36

For me it's not so much missed triggers, but rather cost reductions. Just yesterday I played Semblance Anvil and forgot the reduction about 5 times.

It's those AEther Vial s. I go untap, draw, DAMMIT!

January 16, 2014 4:57 p.m.

Once, using Isochron Scepter , I misread the card and cast it without imprinting anything. That was so bad.

A lot of people seem to not realize or forget Necropotence means I do not have a draw step. It comes up surprisingly often when I play with it; for example, people not realizing it causes me to miss out on the effects from Howling Mine or Underworld Dreams .

We had an entire table cleaned up after someone said he was going to go infinite on my turn once; we were tired and it was late, so that seemed sufficient. It was only as we were finishing someone asked him how the infinite combo worked, and he explained it would have been in response to my draw on my draw step (I don't remember how it worked, sorry), and we had to point out how Necropotence works, heheh.

In our defense it was technically morning and we might have been drinking a little bit.

January 16, 2014 5:15 p.m.

Surprised no one here has ever said Howling Mine or Font of Mythos . Both cards are quite easily missed in my playgroup. Many people I've played with, as well as myself, miss these triggers completely for several turns

January 16, 2014 6:04 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #41

Similarly, I miss Consecrated Sphinx triggers all the time. Normally it's good for two cards before it gets hit with a kill spell... if I remember! I miss quite a few triggers, thinking about it...

SharuumNyan says... #42

Yup, AEther Vial is a big one for me too.

January 17, 2014 5:23 p.m.

SharuumNyan says... #43

I never miss a card draw trigger like Rhystic Study or Howling Mine if I have a Reliquary Tower out. I put it on the top of my lands during an EDH game to remind me to draw cards whenever I can.

January 17, 2014 5:27 p.m.

IS it a bad thing if you see someone else's card and they forget the trigger and you don't say anything? Example being playing EDH, they were piloting a Nekusar, the Mindrazer , with Jace's Erasure , and they put their enchants to the side and forgot about them I see em but don't say anything. Once they realizes it I say its their job to remember those types of things.

January 17, 2014 9:12 p.m.

Du_Co says... #45

@ Ijustliketolift It does say may, so if they forget its on them, though in a casual setting when I play with cards like that I do it without being asked, because Im playing with my friends.

January 17, 2014 9:22 p.m.

nobu_the_bard says... #46

Generally speaking if an opponent misses a trigger for some reason, but I see it, I remind them. It's not fun to miss things and I hate seeing it happen to other people as much as I hate having it happen to me.

January 17, 2014 11:18 p.m.

acbooster says... #47

When I'm playing against my full out Spike friends, I'm unforgiving. If you miss it you miss it. However, with the others I tend to point it out. This is generally because the Spikes play as if they're at a competitive event even though we're with friends.

January 18, 2014 12:05 a.m.

I'm in agreement with acbooster.
