Dragons of Tarkir additions —March 13, 2015

Now that we're deep in the heart of Dragons of Tarkir spoiler season, I thought I'd update the deck with what I feel are the Atarka DTK must haves thus far:

Dragon Tempest, Dragonlord Atarka, Haven of the Spirit Dragon, Sarkhan's Triumph & Savage Ventmaw

Fairly glorious additions I would say and hopefully there's a bunch more DTK goodies to come. Now...All we need to do is collectively pretend Sarkhan Unbroken doesn't have in the casting cost.

Resetting the comments while I'm at it here. Once again, a big thanks to all who have provided feedback.

if you need something to cheat creature in to play like quicksilver amulet you could also put Elvish Piper

i also like Fury of the Horde in my scion deck a second battle phase is always nice

Good suggestions maxshadow987. Piper is awesome, I may try to find a home for her in here. Fury is cool too - The conditional CC might come in handy in a pinch.

Since you're playing green, Triumph of the Hordes. I like all my decks to have an Infect Win Condition.

i have also another idea if you have the budget for Sword of Feast and Famine

you can do Hellkite Charger + Sword of Feast and Famine for a great ways to get combat phase after combat phase

Perhaps Vergil_Redgrail. Infect is always dirty, I mean that in a good way. The +1 & trample would also be cool. Definitely a card to consider, thanks.

That's a great idea maxshadow987. Would be even easier with Aggravated Assault out too (I run a similar trick in my Uril build: Aggravated Assault + Bear Umbra ). So my question to you...What card would you cut to make room for the sword? I'm at that tough stage where I can make a strong case for just about every card in here now.

that is a hard question i dont run your deck so it is hard say but if it where me play a couple of game with it and see what you find the lest useful

Personally I would take out Coat of Arms for the sword. Its the kind of card that could end up hurting you depending on the type of opponent since it pumps ALL creatures that share a type. If you come up against a token deck you are never gonna cast it. With dragons you probably won't ever have more than 2 out at a time and if you do... you are already winning :)

Interesting, that's a good point LittleBlueHero. Although extremely powerful in the right deck (Krenko says hi), CoA is definitely situational whereas the sword would likely be value all the time. I'll have to playtest a little more to see if that's a viable swap.

Heya Forkbeard,

What are your thoughts on running Sneak Attack, Berserk and Greater Good? I've yet to fully play test these and would value your input.

Thanks,

ZC

I think all 3 of those cards would be awesome, perfect symmetry too. Use Sneak Attack to cheat out a dragon, cast Berserk, sac to Greater Good after the damage is done, profit. I don't currently own a Sneak Attack or a Berserk but I might give Greater Good a try as it would also go nicely with Kiki + Feldon tokens.

Along those lines, Surge of Strength would be another decent way to slam Atarka in for victory. Hmmmmmmm...

i would like to see Summer Bloom added to the deck but that is just me

I like it thevodkaboy. After playing the deck a number of times now, it could definitely use a little more ramp. Summer Bloom is pretty situational and not ideal late game but it's definitely a cool spell.

Have you had any issues with mass removal you might need? I also run an Atarka deck and even tho Atarka does manage to hit at least once, I end up in serious problems against other strong creatures, specially with those who can enter the battlefield faster than you (even with ramp). Kaalia's deck is an example of this, when Atarka enters my opponents are already running a lot of angels/dragons/demons or they already destroyed all the lands, etc., reanimator is the same pain. lol

If this could be the case for you as well, try Blasphemous Act and Starstorm for other flying creatures that you can't hit with Earthquake, even Chain Reaction could be good so you don't have to leave it all to be dealing with other fliers one at a time with the frontier siege/chaos warp/beast within.

Forkbeard says... #19

Actually, I haven't really had those issues yet arceus. The ramp spells have served me well so far, I'm rarely behind...In fact, I'm usually the threat as far as getting the fatties on the table first. On top of the removal cards you mentioned (mainly Beast Within, Chaos Warp, Earthquake & Frontier Siege), the utility dragons tend to swath a path rather nicely. Balefire Dragon, Flameblast Dragon, Scourge of Kher Ridges, Scourge of Valkas, Tyrant's Familiar...You get the idea. Thundermaw Hellkite is another great surprise to open the skies for Atarka to swoop in.

Lastly, the deck is really focused on keeping creatures out. Although a good table clear is sometimes necessary, I tend to play this deck aggressively. I like the suggestions you've put forward - If I ever find I'm in need of further mass kill, I'll keep those 3 beauts in mind. Thanks arceus. I'd be interested in checking out your decklist, I didn't see it listed under your decks.

Ranger's Path and Three Visits are other ramps spells you mite consider (I know you already have the better 2 skyshroud claim and naturs lore) but as i like to say "if it's worth running its worth running 2" if possible

Savage Ventmaw + Aggravated Assault might be a thing...

Some really good stuff showing up in DTK for this deck. Excited.
