I respect the build. I'm not sure that I love Amulet of Vigor in the deck though, nor that Syphon Flesh is neccessary. Secrets of the Dead also feels slightly win-more since it looks like only Gravecrawler, Yawgmoth's Will, Army of the Damned's flashback, and Havengul Lich trigger it.

On the topic of Havengul Lich, I believe you already have the components of a somewhat messy combo (besides anything with Rooftop Storm- that's pretty obvious). Cast a Fatestitcher from the graveyard to gain a sweet tap ability; if you can get Grimgrin in there as well, you pickup a means to untap the Lich; add a land that can make larger doses of mana (e.g. Cabal Coffers), and you can cast all zombies from your graveyard. If your Coffers taps for enough, just feed creatures to Havengul to keep untapping the Coffer and recasting dudes from the sandbox. Geralf's Messenger works pretty well here as well (or anything with Undying), as you get two untaps. The only uncertainty I have is that Grimgrin's untap ability says to untap "Grimgrin," and I'm not sure how that translates to Havengul copying the ability (I've never found a ruling). All that does require a decent mana investment to get started though, so it's pretty much limited to the late-late game.

Somewhat still in the same vein, I'd reccomend Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Crypt of Agadeem, and Nephalia Drownyard to the list. Ooh, also an Underground Sea (budget permitting), Fetid Pools, and possibly Bad River (or other black fetch) and basic Island. The Nykthos is just good, and the Crypt+Drownyard combine well with your plethora of Zombie Apocalypse effects (though Balthor the Defiled is conspicuously missing). Underground Sea, Fetid Pools and Bad River just juice up Coffers a little more. The basic is a concession to Blood Moon/Back to Basics effects, even if it's otherwise miserable. Maybe Reliquary Tower could go? I cut it a long time ago, since discarding with the deck isn't that bad. Anyhow, you write a good intro and the list is one of the more sensible ones I've seen. Keep up the good work and God bless. -McDeity

Aside from assisting Grimgrin's ETB tapped factor, Amulet of Vigor is actually more handy than it looks considering I'm currently running 9 'enters tapped' lands. Unless I spruce up the land base, I'd have to really be struggling with cuts to consider axing Amulet. Totally agree with Syphon Flesh though, it's mediocre at best - every so often it shines but it's definitely a contender for replacement. Secrets of the Dead stays put! Not only is it fantastic from a thematic standpoint, the draw is insane with Gravecrawler in the mix (he's almost always my first tutor target as he enables virtually everything). At 3 mana, I'd hardly call it a win-more card.

Regarding your second paragraph, yeah...The overall deck synergy complements dozens of sneaky interactions.

Onto the lands - I like the idea of Crypt of Agadeem, Fetid Pools (really like the Island Swamp factor + cycling may come in handy if I pull it late game) & Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx in here, good calls. Also agree with your Island suggestion - although Blood Moon/Back to Basics are rare in my meta, it would still really suck. I would absolutely run Underground Sea but yeah, I'm not ready to drop $350 on an ABUR dual just yet. I don't think I'd cut Reliquary Tower for the aforementioned draw engine and as for Nephalia Drownyard & Balthor the Defiled, I ran both of those in here in previous iterations and ended up removing them at some point - Drownyard is too slow + too little value & I found I was running enough recursion without giving my opponents potential advantage as well.

Great feedback & suggestions McDeity, I appreciate it!

Nice build, really like it. I've got a similar deck I'm finishing up, but I run Gisa and Geralf as the commander. But, I do run Grimgrin, Corpse-Born in the 99, and now I look forward more than ever to playing it. Its nice to also see that I could switch out the two as commanders if I so choose.

Thanks bushido_man96, G&G + Grimgrin are definitely fun decks to pilot. I checked out your build - I really like the idea of Rooftop Storm + Soulquake. Brilliant!

Dang. Gonna have to get that for my grim deck. Wow.

Thanks, Forkbeard. That was a combo someone else pointed out to me, and thought, "Yeah, that's going in there." I've got the last of the cards en route to put that together, and am looking forward to playing it. I might swap Grimgrin, Corpse-Born as the commander and see how it runs, too, but I don't have quite as much mill going on to make him work consistently. I think I'd have to do a build more similar to yours.

Nice list man, I have been looking for ideas for revamping my Grimgrin deck recently so finding this has been helpful. What are your thoughts on Coat of Arms for decks like this, as it makes your zombies huge if you have several of them. The only thing for it is that if there are several tribal decks in your play area it get bad really quick as it also pumps your enemy's creatures.

Thanks blackaddicus, glad you like the deck! Coat of Arms is one of those spectacular tribal cards that rides the line between amazing and jank. In the right deck it can work wonders, especially in a 'go wide' strategy - for example, it can be game ending in goblins or elves (incidentally I do run it in both my Krenko + Rashmi tribal brews - I really enjoy playing tribal, I have 6 tribal decks at the moment). On the flip side, as you pointed out I often find it benefits my opponents just as much. I'm pretty sure I had it in here at some point and ended up swapping it out for that reason, it just didn't jive with what the zoms were trying to do.

Forkbeard I love this deck. I'll be using it to give my Grimgrin deck a much needed upgrade after not changing it much for 2 years. What are your thoughts on Door of Destinies ?

Forkbeard says... #10

Nice one sarmmeth, thanks very much. I really, really like Door of Destinies but I always end up cutting it in my tribal decks. For starters, it can be really slow. As soon as Door of Destinies gets enough counters on it to start doing some work, an opponent usually takes it out. In my experience I've found that playing a tribe lord is preferable or something like a surprise Coat of Arms when the time is right. Shame because I love the tribal flavour of the card, I just haven't had much success with it.

kinda a funny thing, but Undead Alchemist is a fun card in zombie decks

August 28, 2017 3:25 p.m.

Forkbeard says... #13

Thanks jfly517. I've looked at Undead Alchemist a few times and have gone back and forth on whether or not he should be included. Certainly a unique, interesting effect - I like the token creation + reanimate possibilities, but he would neuter Grimgrin's damage. I could always try the card out for a bit, see how it goes.

Have you ever had Corpse Harvester in this deck? It pairs well with Gravecrawler and Relentless Dead, though it seems like you have lots of tutoring already.

I have had Corpse Harvester in the deck! I always go back and forth on whether or not I should reintroduce him to the zombie army...he's definitely good, albeit a little slow.

with the 2017 commander decks came path of ancestry: could it be a nice addition to this deck?

October 1, 2017 2:16 p.m.

Forkbeard says... #18

Maybe! I didn't really consider Path of Ancestry in a 2 colour deck, but I am liking the idea of the scry bonus.

Have you thought about Kindred Discovery ? Costs more than Secrets of the Dead but it triggers alot more (sry i cant make the card to link somehow)

October 2, 2017 1:46 a.m.

Forkbeard says... #20

Kindred Discovery is a great card, lots of tribal value. I'm running it in 2 other tribal decks (slivers & elves) and I can see it being a good fit here too as I am light on card draw options. Good call Falkenbach1, I might try to slot it in here.

Congratulations on the deck.Sorry for my English.I'd like to know how the performance of this deck is in a copetitive mood.I've been looking for a competitive list for a long time.Thank you very much for your attention.

March 1, 2018 7:22 p.m.

Forkbeard says... #22

Thanks FaiberJC! I would say that this deck is more on the casual side. There's some juicy game ending combos + zombies are notoriously resilient due to all of the recursion going on, but this deck is too slow for cEDH. The average CMC is on the high side & unfortunately this deck completely folds to any graveyard hate.

TLDR; Fantastic & thematic kitchen table brew that packs a punch, will not take first prize on the competitive EDH pro tour.

artifacts and enchantments are usually also a problem for this deck and all demir coloured decks. You found any ways of dealing with that?

March 4, 2018 3:55 a.m.

Forkbeard says... #25

Yeah, artifacts and enchantments are the bane of Dimir decks for sure. A well timed Cyclonic Rift is usually the best bet, or you could always throw in some counterspells if they're becoming a problem in your meta.
