4th at FNM —Nov. 29, 2013
So. I took this deck to FNM again tonight with the only changes being the changes I implemented after last week plus Thoughtflare and went 3-1, got 4th overall.
RD1 Azorious... unknown? Weird matchup against a weird deck that seemed conflicted about what cards it should have. I'm not sure I saw 2 of the same card ever on my opponents side of the field.
G1 small weenies, then suddenly BOOOM Jace, Memory Adept mills out all my Elite Arcanist. I manage all 4 Zhur-Taa Druid on field and squeak through lethal damage with 2 cards left in library.
G2 combo out a win
1-0
RD2 Dimir mill. This deck devoted itself to creature removal and mill
G1 Jace, Memory Adept ultimate plus Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver for several turns previous mill me out
G2 sideboard in 3 Pithing Needle and Elixir of Immortality, get milled out without seeing any of them except in my graveyard.
1-1
RD3 B/W/R midrange deck
G1 combo the win just in time
G2 Slaughter Games my Elite Arcanist
We take a break so I can go cry.
I mange to squeak lethal by a Blood Baron of Vizkopa and a Obzedat, Ghost Council with some well timed Simic Charm on some 3/3 golems from Hammer of Purphoros and win WITHOUT the combo or any of the pieces... I was in awe.
2-1
RD4 Fathom Mage, Archangel of Thune, Horizon Chimera combo
G1, When I see the third color of lands I randomly guess the combo, his face tells me I'm right, and its a race to see who combos first. I win the race but he had 2 Archangel of Thune on the battlefield plus a Fathom Mage by the time I won.
G2, Another race to see who can combo fastest and I end up winning the race but he again had 2 Archangel of Thune on his side of the battlefield. Very intense.
3-1
Last 2 games of the last 2 rounds were really intense but my deck held up and won.
After FNM thoughts:
Thoughtflare is really good... I only saw it once the entire night but I really liked it when I saw it. Lightning Strike seems to be a dead card a lot of the time and most games it got sided out for something else. Scrying against a mill deck does nothing... but make you cry. I could use some removal that is certain to work every time like Doom Blade. I also had 2 games where I couldn't combo a win but still managed to win. Game 1 for the night my Elite Arcanist got milled out, then Game 6 Slaughter Games naming Elite Arcanist. Each time I squeak by a win by some how getting lethal damage through (thank you Zhur-Taa Druid and Hammer of Purphoros respectively)
Negate is in sideboard. So far I've found it more important to stall and kill their creatures than worry about countering their spells. I am however considering replacing the Lightning Strike with Essence Scatter because of Fanatic of Mogis , Gray Merchant of Asphodel and the like.

Nah thats exactly what sideboards are for, negate stays there, lightning strike stays mainboard. If your uo against gray or fanatic, side it in. Also, whats the logic in using Inspiration ? I feel your wasting one mana? Divination its sorcery but when is it so important to draw during their turn?
November 24, 2013 6:28 p.m.
Its important for me to save mana or bluff save mana for AEtherize , Magma Jet , Lightning Strike , and the occasional forced Triton Tactics or Simic Charm and the late game Hammer of Purphoros to create a defender. I will however put a couple Essence Scatter sideboard.

I agree, instant speed draw is just better. I've seen a lot of people suggest Divination over Inspiration on a lot of different decks. I've got to think that those people haven't played it because the difference of leaving mana open and drawing EOT is huge. As he said, it lets you bluff your removal spells, or even leave mana for them, and draw if they aren't necessary. It makes your opponents more cautious which can actually mean they don't attack when they should. All in all its worth the extra mana and I would never even consider Divination over Inspiration for those reasons.

Bestach I completely agree. Inspiration is a lot better than Divination in almost more every situation.

I would highly recommend the following:
More mana dorks (Elvish Mystic , Sylvan Caryatid )
Our playgroup actually built our version of this and took it to an FNM... with just the Zhur-Taa Druid , you run into the problem where any removal pretty much wrecks you...
We found that with the other mana dorks + Guttersnipe or Nivix Cyclops , it gives another win-con.

this is wonderful, and I'll be doing my best to make my own copy of it for my playgroup. I'm been looking for a way to break the arcanist for a while, thanks.

If your having trouble against targeted removsl you could add something like Mizzium Skin or if board wipes are giving you trouble you could use something like Mending Touch or if burn spells are your probablem then you should just use Triton Tactics

@dominicd If there were any good tutors I would, Signal the Clans is just to random for me to play it, Commune with the Gods can put some good cards into my graveyard, and I have a lot of scry, card draw, and stall tactics.
@drakanar I had tried that previously but the problem I ran into was that it too many slots in my deck and turned into either needing Elite Arcanist +Triton Tactics and Zhur-Taa Druid (3 card combo, already hard to pull off) or Elite Arcanist +Triton Tactics and Guttersnipe +mana dork (4 card combo) so I pulled it. Honestly I haven't had that much problem with removal, mostly it's been stalling long enough to get the full combo out.
@asasinater13 No problem, always love to spread the brokenness around XD
@Felixlives I've looked into Mizzium Skin and I might look into it again but for now I have Simic Charm and I haven't had that much problem with removal. Mending Touch is in my maybe-board but I haven't had a problem with boardwipes, and yah, I use Triton Tactics to protect my creatures if I need to.

Hey Lord007, I am very new to Magic (as in I don't own a single card, I just visited a friend and he showed me how to play it) and I was wanting to build a deck. I was wondering if the three card combo is like an infinite loop that ends the game if the opponent doesn't have a Cancel or something like that, or if it just repeats every turn for 20 turns? Respond if you can, it would be very much appreciated! And by the way, if that is how it works then that is AWESOME and a very great deck and combo find! Thanks.

Hey man, the way it works is explained pretty well in the description, you may just need to learn a bit more magic. Whenever a card is untapped, unless something stops it from tapping, it may tap, no matter how many times it already had this turn. Since Triton Tactics untaps both Zhur-Taa Druid and Elite Arcanist they cant repeat indefinitely. Once you opponent realises what youre doing if they can, they will interrupt your combo by removing one of more of your combo pieces. Thats what the rest of this deck is for. Stopping them stopping you, holding out until you can combo, drawing your combo.

Thanks! That's what I thought was happening but I was not 100% sure.

Have you considered Thoughtflare for card draw?
November 28, 2013 11:40 a.m.
MajesticRutabaga I had not seen that... That will definitely be making it's way into this deck thanks!!
@bi0v0id: Dropbear did a very good job of explaining how it works. Thank you both for your interest in my deck. If you have any other questions I'd love to be able to help you out.
@Dalektable I'm glad you like it. It's so much fun to pull off at FNM against someone who has no idea how it works. The look on their faces is priceless and since they usually end up winning the round I never feel bad about pulling it off.

Wow. This is so close to under $30 that I have to be amazed.
This is a very fragile combo, and so killing creatures isn't going to help it. I would take out the three Lightning Strike s, and put in three Negate s. Countermagic is very important in this deck, and Negate counters (for starters): Magma Jet , Lightning Strike , Putrefy , Cyclonic Rift , and Elspeth, Sun's Champion . You could side in Lightning Strike against RDW, but countermagic is more important for this deck.
