Sylvan Basilisk

Creature — Basilisk

Whenever Sylvan Basilisk becomes blocked by a creature, destroy that creature.

Not modern for sure, but there was a time with Tempting Licid and Sylvan Basilisk were a combo. Can't think of newer examples but it's a really cool effect and I'm excited to see what people mention.

Old-school poison is always a real charmer... it took a lot more work to get it to function back then, ha ha.

If you're interested in making a mess with the old Thicket Basilisk and Lure combo, you might prefer Sylvan Basilisk in his place. The Sylvan wipes creatures as soon as it's blocked, not at the end of combat, ensuring he's never killed by blockers. For what it's worth, he can also bring down walls! Another good alternative is Elven Warhounds, who are one mana less and don't kill the blockers... but possibly do something even work! They stuff your opponent's creatures on top of his deck, forcing him to just draw the same cards again. This can buy you tons of time to finish a foe off, as he either has to keep replaying his creatures (accomplishing nothing) or just sit for a few turns until he draws through them all and then hopefully gets a noncreature way to deal with things. It's pretty delightful!

I'm just remembering that there are a few creatures that will destroy blockers before damage is even dealt, and these are great to put lure onto:

Engulfing Slagwurm

Evil Eye of Urborg

Sylvan Basilisk

Zombie Boa

These were found using a Gatherer search of Rules Text "becomes blocked" and "destroy".

@lilgiantrobot This is fantastic! I understand the importance of Engulfing Slagwurm/Sylvan Basilisk now. Between them and Nacatl War-Pride(which is a fantastic find by the way, thank you) the deck is starting to be more cohesive. Instead of only relying on Kamahl, Fist of Krosa I can now comfortably add in Jolrael, Empress of Beasts, Natural Affinity and Nature's Revolt.

In order to add emphasis on land destruction I also want to mention two more cards Verdant Touch and Quirion Druid. The druid is nice because he's like a mini Kamahl.

I'm going to try to revise the deck later today and look at it again from a new perspective. I think there's a lot of potential here :-)

@MrMeowser Its the power. The problem with using say Ambush Viper over Engulfing Slagwurm or Sylvan Basilisk (I said Cockatrice before and thats a bad choice since it flies) is that the Viper can only assign two points of damage, so it will only destroy two creatures. The Wurm/SB wording is important since it doesn't have anything to do with combat damage, just whether or not the creature was blocked. Slagwurm also have the nice bonus of gaining you a ton of life.

I threw up my list on another site yesterday and got a terrific recommendation I'll share here: Nacatl War-Pride. If enemy lands are animated its a one-card combo since it makes all the lands block a 3/3, and they're big enough to kill Jolrael's animated lands too!

Wizard Mentor needs little explanation. Professor Flitwick perhaps!

You could include some spiders from the Forbidden Forest.

Courser of Kruphix probably does a good Firenze.

Also can include a sphinx since one appeared in the third task of the Tri-wizard Tournament.

Mindslaver = Imperious Curse

Can't actually be used, but Stone-Cold Basilisk fits the flavour amazingly well. Sylvan Basilisk might fit the bill.

There might be one or two werewolves that would fit Lupin's character.

Dazzling Reflection looks a little bit like a patronus.

Razor Hippogriff = Buckbeak!

Young Pyromancer has wonderful red hair which may remind you of any member of a certain family.

Prodigal Sorcerer would probably fit nicely as a character. The new version could be Harry maybe, or the old version could be ... I'm not sure.

Dragon Egg = Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback!

Cabal Interrogator could be someone like Snape or Voldemort who can use Legilimancy.

Fiend of the Shadows looks like it might fit for Voldemort. Or something with undying.

Include a phoenix to represent Fawkes?

Mirror Gallery would fit for the final room in Philosopher's Stone.

I'm sure someone can come up with a good card to represent Dobby.

Unless Deathmist Raptor comes with the deck, it doesn't look like you run enough morphs/manifests to make it worth buying... I'd suggest a (cheaper) Basilisk (there are several, and I'm not sure which is best)... perhaps Sylvan Basilisk, Turntimber Basilisk or Lowland Basilisk, or a Cockatrice, such as Fleetfeather Cockatrice
