Elderscale Wurm

Creature — Wurm

Trample When Elderscale Wurm enters the battlefield, if your life total is less than 7, your life total becomes 7. As long as you have 7 or more life, damage that would reduce your life total to less than 7 reduces it to 7 instead.

Crow_Umbra on Twenty Years of Playing Magic!

This March or April will be my 10 year-aversary of playing MtG. I'll know for sure once my TappedOut Joined section on my profile ticks up to 10.

I was wrapping up my 2nd year in college when one of my now good friends told me very enthusiastically about MtG over a very crappy dining hall dinner. He started playing sometime around OG Zendikar or OG Innistrad, and what the world building and mechanics were like. He told me that I was starting at a great time, as Magic was returning to a super popular plane called "Ravnica", with 10 factions that represented different color combinations of this "color pie".

Since we were all broke college students, we played a very janky table top casual using the Modern format as our card pool. At the time Commander seemed out of our reach, both in terms of focusing a 99 card singleton deck, and financially.

That spring break, my friend took me to Target, where I bought some Return to Ravnica Magic Core 2013 packs (remember Core Sets?), a Simic Evolve starter deck (remember starter decks?), and a case of opened cards/bulk that Target would repackage from things people returned. First rares I pulled were a Deathrite Shaman, an Elderscale Wurm, and a foil Godless Shrine. At the time I was so bummed to pull a land as my rare lol.

I've taken some sporadic breaks from playing at times when I lived too far from my friends, but always kept up with new set releases and lore. My friends and I started playing EDH the summer of 2019 and we've pretty much stuck with it.

Now that our playgroup is becoming split again due to moves & differing schedules, my friend that got me into MtG and I are attending more of the LGSs in our area. It's been cool to have a friendship grow through and with MtG.

I think a card like that would be okay alongside a damage replacement effect. Something like Worship or Elderscale Wurm where you don’t prevent the damage, but instead replace it.

I definitely agree, and I am keeping the 2 for now, but the digging power feels good enough that I have the space if I need it for something else. I have 7 large creatures + 4 pacts + 2 turntimber (which does whiff once in a while). A lot of the time a Primeval Titan will seal the game, while a sideboard creature just puts me in a better spot (they don't have haste and aren't lethal the next turn usually). Depending on the situation, it can be better to gamble on drawing good. Even if I whiff on those draws, I just eliminated 3 bad draws which might have cost me the game anyway if they could have dealt with that singular threat.

Cultivator Colossus is the only fatty that isn't ideal to draw over a sideboard option, but even it isn't that bad. Elderscale Wurm is better stalling and just as good of a body, and Primeval Titan is just well...what the deck is built around.

Also, a lot of the non-fatty cards I can draw help me out depending on what other presence I have. There's a lot of smaller synergies throughout the deck. The only bad draw is really Sakura-Tribe Scout and Arboreal Grazer. Even lands can add value whether through lifegain (Courser of Kruphix), card draw (Cultivator Colossus), or their inherent utility (most of my lands do something).

Most of the time when I actually need something, it is a green bounceland (or enough smaller lands to get to 6), and this helps big time in filling that slot. It just so happens that it also fills the big creature hole pretty well too (around 60% consistency if I had none).

It really shines when I am low on threats, since this helps to replenish in a big way. If I don't have enough for Glittering Wish + casting the big guy same turn, this is the obvious choice (I can hold up interaction then cash in on card advantage if I don't feel threatened). If I've not used all the extra land drops I have access to, this is that much better as well. It's just an all around great card, and I'm only talking about one mode on it. Eliminating my opponent's largest threat is great, and the option of exiling their graveyard at instant speed can sometimes be relevant.

May I suggest Squall Line over Hurricane as the instant speed makes it more difficult to see coming? And you could throw in Elderscale Wurm to turn either Squall Line or Hurricane into a win-con.

The list I have here is not the best version against boros burn, as you can burn away my devotion permanents and keep me from establishing a strong board prescence. Basically my best hope is to slam early Champions and try to go fast. Out of the sideboard I bring in Blood Moons and Ruric Thar, if I can get to 6 mana.

I have played a different list in the past that opted for Primal Commands instead of Fierce Empath, and Courser of Kruphix instead of Llanowar Tribe. That version was slower but nearly impossible for burn to beat. Especially if I sided in Eternal Witness to chain Primal Commands.

I one point I had Elderscale Wurm in the side for the burn matchup, but my local meta rarely had burn players, so I took it out.

Glad to see you're making your own first deck instead of buying a precon. If you're looking for card suggestions you might check out

Elderscale Wurm - super hard for your opponents to get rid of if your commander is out, prevents dying due to damage

Dauntless Escort - will save all your creatures (for free at instant speed) from a board wipes since those are pretty devastating to tokens and creatures

Beast Whisperer - can help with your card draw, plus it's a great card in general that's probably just gonna keep rising in price

Return of the Wildspeaker - can be used for card draw or a big smack, another great card in general that will keep going up in price

Good luck with the new deck ;)

Trying to improve the synergy of the deck by adding more creatures. It just feels bad to have a Survival of the Fittest in hand without targets!

Out - Gauntlet of Power - Blasting Station - Whiptongue Hydra

In + Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger + Elderscale Wurm + Squallmonger

Gauntlet of Power feels like the worst of the mana doubler. At more than 4 cmc, you should not play a symmetrical effect. I replaced it with Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. Blasting Station was often a dead card in hand and cannot be tutored for when it can win the game. Whiptongue Hydra was replaced by Squallmonger: does the same for flyers, but can also win the game. Instead of blasting station I added Elderscale Wurm, which plays nicely with squallmonger.

No problem! I think on its face Quicksilver Amulet is probably better than Dramatic Entrance. My only insight to advocate for dramatic entrance would be because the artifact/activated abilities hate being sideboarded in game two when the opponent brings in Pithing Needle/Abrade.... dramatic entrance can also just be straight up counter-bait.... when the opponent sees dramatic entrance they will counter it if they can, but if your gonna amass the mana to cast the wurm anyway then they will likely just run out of counters.. at least that's why I use it.

Somthing else to consider if aggro is problematic in conjunction with Elderscale Wurm maybe instead of Tron Lands/Urza's Tower ect ect. Would be using Defender Ramp with Axebane Guardian/Overgrown Battlement, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Carven Caryatid... granted this completely warps the deck into something else entirely but I figured I'd mention it.

Good luck with the brew!
