Piloted by Elaine, comments in bold.

Game 1

E wins the toss and plays first. She keeps a hand of 2x Breeding Pool, Hallowed Fountain, Avacyn's Pilgrim, Geist of Saint Traft, Voice of Resurgence.

C mulligans a hand of Island, Drowned Catacomb, Sulfur Falls, Nephalia Drownyard, 2x Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, and Staff of Nin.

That will get me killed against even the slowest control deck, most likely.

C keeps a hand of Swamp, Watery Grave, Dragonskull Summit, Drowned Catacomb, Murder, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.

E1

E plays Breeding Pool untapped (C 20, E 18) and casts Avacyn's Pilgrim.

There's a little bit of asymmetry in these matches because she knows this deck so well. She knows she's basically free to pay 2 life to shocklands whenever she wants.

C1

C draws Devour Flesh, and plays Watery Grave tapped.

E2

E draws Hallowed Fountain and plays it untapped. (C 20, E 16). She casts Geist of Saint Traft.

Gotta put on some early pressure before he gets Barter in Blood mana out.

C2

C draws Gilded Lotus. He plays Dragonskull Summit and passes.

E3

E draws Voice of Resurgence. She plays Breeding Pool untapped. (C 20, E 14). She casts 2x Voice of Resurgence.

Well that just went from bad to horrifying.

E attacks with Geist and hits with it and its angel. (C 14, E 14).

C3

C draws Sulfur Falls, plays Drowned Catacomb, and casts Murder on Avacyn's Pilgrim.

E4

E draws Temple Garden. She attacks with all her creatures and hits. (E 14, C 4). She casts Abundant Growth on Breeding Pool, drawing Glacial Fortress.

C4

C draws Island and concedes.

Sideboarding

E boards in 3x Murder Investigation. She boards out 3x Spectral Flight.

I could also try to get Rest in Peace in, but not sure what to remove for it.

C boards in 3x Essence Scatter and 2x Dissipate. He boards out 3x Mystic Retrieval and 2x Gilded Lotus.

Game 2

C mulligans a one-land hand.

E mulligns a zero-land hand.

C keeps a hand of Sulfur Falls, Desolate Lighthouse, Nephalia Drownyard, Chromatic Lantern, Murder, Essence Scatter.

E keeps a hand of Breeding Pool, Sunpetal Grove, Avacyn's Pilgrim, Strangleroot Geist, Ethereal Armor, and Spectral Flight.

C1

C plays Sulfur Falls.

E1

E draws Hinterland Harbor. She plays Breeding Pool untapped and casts Avacyn's Pilgrim. (C 20, E 18).

C2

C draws Drowned Catacomb and plays Desolate Lighthouse.

E2

E draws Curiosity. She plays Hinterland Harbor. She casts Strangleroot Geist, but C Essence Scatters it. E enchants Avacyn's Pilgrim with Ethereal Armor.

C3

C draws Think Twice. He plays Drowned Catacomb and casts Chromatic Lantern.

E3

E draws Invisible Stalker. She plays Sunpetal Grove. She casts the Stalker and puts Spectral Flight on it.

C4

C draws Island and plays it.

E4

E draws Voice of Resurgence and casts it. In response, C kills Avacyn's Pilgrim with Murder, and casts Think Twice drawing Dragonskull Summit. E enchants Invisible Stalker with Curiosity, then attacks with it and hits (E 18, C 17), drawing Hallowed Fountain, which she plays.

C5

C draws Devour Flesh. He plays Dragonskull Summit and casts the Devour. E sacs Voice of Resurgence and gets a token.

E5

E draws Geist of Saint Traft and casts it. She attacks with Invisible Stalker and the token and hits. (E 18, C 11). She draws Hallowed Fountain and plays it tapped. End step, C flashes back Think Twice, drawing Swamp.

C6

C draws Barter in Blood.

Finally. But it still doesn't solve this mess.

C casts Barter in Blood. E sacs the token and Geist of Saint Traft.

I need the card advantage.

E6

E draws Geist of Saint Traft. She attacks with Invisible Stalker and hits. (E 18, C 8). She draws Murder Investigation. She casts Geist of Saint Traft and enchants him with Murder Investigation.

C7

C draws Dragonskull Summit and concedes. E wins the match 2-0.

Comments

You know, for a deck filled with creature auras going up against a deck filled with kill spells, that actually went a lot better than I thought it would go.

Not a lot to say here. When you get hosed, you get hosed. My draws weren't ideal, but they weren't awful either. The opposing deck runs at an excellent tempo, and while my deck should have been able to two-for-one it a bit more, the whole point is not to give decks like mine time to react. Very well-built.

Ow. And I guess the really annoying part is that you've got all the right answers to that kind of deck but it went off too fast.

Still, from the perspective of me getting entertained by this, it's nice to see Bolas's bad matchups and it's big of you to post your horrible losses as well as your amazing successes. Thumbs up, Kaley, this is why I like this series.

When Voice of Resurgence was first spoiled and everyone was like, "OMG He's so good!!11!1" I didn't see it.

But now I do, and I wish I had gotten my playset early. X_x

Excellent article as always Kaley. I'm glad you're playing a wide spectrum of decks, from casual to Tier 1 lists.

Thank you sir for letting my deck go up against the legend of bolas...sorry to see that it wasn't able to sneak a victory, but i guess that's a good thing in how the deck works and it works well!

Looking forward to more articles :)

I may just be a jaded DDD voter, but I have to say "OH GOSH, Elaine thought poorly of Auras. Quelle suprise," with as much dripping sarcasm as text can muster.

KrazyCaley says... #8

@TridenT - To be fair, I do think they're a lot worse in constructed than they are in a limited format. Beaucoup de removal in constructed.

TridenT says... #9

Indeed! And in the interest of further fairness, I'm pro-Auras more often than not. Even in constructed. I'm just also a fan of hexproof and making sure my Auras aren't vulnerable.
