Taking Bogles to Tier 1?

Modern forum

I love playing my bogle (aura hexproof) deck, it's aggressive and fun. It's my second favorite deck to play that I own, not just for the enjoyment of the deck, but also because of the number of decks that it is still good against; however, I do agree with the mainstream idea that bogles is a tier 2 deck. It seems like it's biggest problem is sacrafice...among a few others.

My question is, what would wizards have to print to make bogles a tier 1 deck?

PepsiAddicted says... #2

without asking for something too crazy? remove the target restriction on coronet. printing another hexproof creature wouldnt do much imo. i wouldnt play more creatures anyway. and auras are pretty solid atm.. so not much to print for wizards

edicts arent that much of a problem imo, not even spellskite is... counterspell in turn2 and turn2 x=1 chalice pretty much stop you from resolving coronet fast enough.grrr

I don't think the target restriction is a problem PepsiAddicted. Since it cost 2 white it's usually a turn 3 spell anyways and by then there's an aura attached to it. In fact, I think it helps cause it's the only enchantment Spellskite can't steal every time.

So you think the problem are counters and chalice?

Probably a cheap enchantment that gives a creature +x/+x, (any ability here), and spawns a token.

Dryad Arbor. Put it in your damn deck, people.

today im really not good with sentences.... and talking ;)

what i mean is when i lose a game its normally because of a turn2 chalice (before SB) that stops me from resolving the first aura = stops me from using coronet. playing courage for different CMCs in round 1 only works okay imo

so the biggest threats (for me) are turn1 (when im on the draw) discard (IoC etc) & turn2 chalice. A sac effect after turn2 should only hit your Arbor or maybe your spiritdancer if its out already. a late Ensnaring Bridge only works before SB

Otherwise, Leyline of Sanctity in the main deck solves most of your problems if not all of them.

jandrobard says... #8

Probably a hexproof Gaea's Herald for the side, and a hexproof Tajuru Preserver too. That rounds out their bad matchups.

Never having played it, I would think a one drop non-saccable creature might be enough

A hexproof StormCrow?? Seriously though, I'm not sure if anything reasonable could push bogles to tier 1. Perhaps an aura giving all your attached auras pro blue? That would hose your umbras being bounced before an efict or whipe. It would shut down spellskite (I think counts as blue).

Anyways... Tough question

GlistenerAgent: I run 2 Dryad Arbors in the deck and 3 Leyline of Sanctity in the sideboard. The deck still seems to be missing something. I could probably use more fetches.

PepsiAddicted: I'm totally seeing your scare of the chalice now haha. Cause that stops Nature's Claim too. The only viable answer to that is run Gaddock Teeg in the sodeboard and hope you're on play and draw him haha.

jandrobard: what do you want a hexproof Gaea's Herald for? Nearly all the creatures you want to enchant are turn one plays so they likely won't get countered. I'm with PepsiAddicted on this one, I dont think it's a creature thing. The creatures are fine. I think. I think it's an enchantment that does something.

Second question, what does bogles have against infect? Just paths? A lot of people run infect at my game store.

PepsiAddicted says... #12

Before SB i use Unflinching Courage to work around a possible chalice, after SB its natures claim and Qasali Pridemage

March 3, 2015 5:44 p.m.

Put the Leylines in your maindeck. See how it goes.

PepsiAddicted says... #14

For infect maybe SB Melira, Sylvok Outcast

March 3, 2015 5:48 p.m.

InnerFlame says... #15

GlistenerAgent: why do you say that?

March 3, 2015 5:50 p.m.

It solves most (if not all) of your problems. Discard, Liliana of the Veil, Vendilion Clique to some extent. Counterspells and control decks in general are a non-issue, and you shouldn't try to beat sweepers.

i played all 4 copies of leyline mainboard for a while when we had like 50%+ burn in our store after the release of eidolon. it was fun. but right now i wouldt do that

March 3, 2015 5:56 p.m.

Burn and Abzan are the two most popular decks. I'd play a couple.

yeah maybe test it, testing doesnt hurt :)

I would love to see Bogles hit Tier one! It's def. my favorite Modern deck to play next to my Lili's Junk deck. I think That making yourself hexproof is a good way to start either with Leyline of Sanctity, or I also run Aegis of the Gods as an option, or I think there is another one, uhm, True Believer. Melira is good againt Infect, and Tajuru Preserver helps against Liliana decks as well. Dealing with Chalice of the Void seems like it might be a bit tricky tho. I'm sure there is a solution somewhere. I'll think on it!

BotaNickill: Gaddock Teeg works against chalice if you're on play.

kyuuri117 says... #22

Isn't Krosan Grip legal? That seems like it would stop chalice

I don't think sacrifice is such a huge problem for Bogles. Besides Dryad Arbor, there's Fists of Ironwood to help with that, not to mention you often end up with multiple creatures on your opening hand anyway.Chalice of the Void and Engineered Explosives are annoying as heck, but they can be dealt with. Seal of Primordium and Krosan Grip do the job, mostly.

What really screws up Bogles and keeps it from being tier 1 aren't any of these things. It's how often you have to mulligan like a retard to get a half decent hand. And I don't think there's anything Wizards can do to help with that.

On a side note, I wish they'd print another G/U hexproof creature. Favor of the Overbeing is such an underrated card.

Spellskite prevents infect from popping off. I like the MB white leyline idea.

Slycne says... #29

My question is, what would wizards have to print to make bogles a tier 1 deck?

Short of increasing the power level to stupid degrees, like every card is on Daybreak Coronet and Ethereal Armor level, Bogles biggest issue is consistency and resilience. The ideal card would be some 1/1 hexproof creature that could bestow for a cheap cost. This would let the deck run another playset of hexproof while still keeping the aura count high enough.

March 3, 2015 8:57 p.m.

PepsiAddicted says... #30

Thats actually a really good idea

March 3, 2015 9:27 p.m.

unfortunately bestow wont come back for 3+ years if ever and probably not

March 3, 2015 9:30 p.m.

BotaNickill says... #32

It makes for a complicated sideboard, but if you have Melira, Sylvok Outcast for infect, Tajuru Preserver for Liliana of the Veil, Leyline of Sanctity for burn/discard/counters, add Gaddock Teeg, or perhaps add Reclamation Sage to get around the early Chalice of the Void and we might just have a sideboard here?

March 3, 2015 9:51 p.m.

Don't play Melira, Sylvok Outcast for Infect.
