Are there any other cards like Open Into Wonder?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have a Marchesa, the Black Rose deck, and being able to cast Open Into Wonder, subsequently put counters on my creatures, and draw cards is perfect for my deck. Are there any other cards that can imitate that effect? I know Bident of Thassa functions similarly, but I don't have enough fliers to make use of a card like that.

Dethrone is an attack trigger so you don't really need evasion. Anything that dies will be back at the end step including Marchesa if she got a counter.

Some of the best card draw with her in my experience was Grim Haruspex, River Kelpie, Baleful Strix, Sage of Fables, and Mulldrifter.

If it was less about the card draw and more about the evasion Herald of Secret Streams, Archetype of Imagination, and Wonder are solid options. Even Archetype of Aggression has good uses here. I don't know any cards that do both of these things...

Levitation for evasion Coastal Piracy for card draw

From personal experience, you'd rather trade creatures in combat than leave their board unscathed... the inevitable crackback is much more severe. I used to run Herald of Secret Streams and cut it for that reason. Got 99 Upvotes And A Bitch Ain't One - Marchesa for reference.

I'm just trying to put counters on Marchesa so that she can resist board wipes and removal. Her mana value makes her difficult to get out early at times, even with loads of ramp. I'm not trying to win with combat damage.

Coastal Piracy is awesome, but I don't run enough evasive creatures to make it worth it.

The closest thing I can find is Keeper of Keys, but I really don't think I can rely on retaining the monarch ability with my mid-range deck.

Might I recommend going for haste instead then? Things like Anger, Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded, Fervor, and Hammer of Purphoros are some options. Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves for your commander specifically.

These allow you to immediately trigger dethrone over and over again as you aggressively attack into your opponents. Then you can drop your own board wipes and not care because most or all of your things come back.

Sage of Fables, Metallic Mimic, Unspeakable Symbol, and Vigean Graftmage all come down before Marchesa and ensure she enters with a counter. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed doesn't protect Marchesa but is still worth its weight in gold here.

I prefer Marchesa entering with a counter from the above cards over haste. Haste will get an immediate counter on your turn but does nothing to protect Marchesa until your next turn if she dies. Vigean Graftmage is also a free sac on everyone's turn since it enters with counters. Sac Vigean and 1 other guy (preferably etb/death trigger), have Vigean enter first, and graft a counter onto the other creature as it enters so both can be sac'ed on everyone's turn instead of once per round.

Can't say much towards the ongoing discussion, but there are Ghostform and Wind Sail. Also, with a focus on spells like that, Battlefield Thaumaturge could be useful.

theindigoeffect - You gonna get your list up? I've had Marchesa built for like 8 years or so now... let me know when you get around to it.
