Modern Vampires of Eldraine

This deck was originally 95% Competitive, however overnight it dropped to less than 50% Competitive.

**Here is a brief overview of the deck construction:

It starts with a a very basic mana base:

  • Swamps

  • Mutavault to use mid-game for the 2/2 creature effect

  • Castle Locthwain for card draw - the loss of life will be off-set with the lifelink creatures

As for creatures we begin with the 1 drops

Moving on to the next set of creatures costing 2**

  • Gifted Aetherborn - 2/3 with deathtouch and lifelink for ? I think its a no-brainer!

  • Kalastria Highborn - If another she or another vampire are going to the graveyard, pay a then she hits the opponent for 2 and you are gaining 2. Nice bonus lifegain ability when you are probably already gaining life from a lifelink vampire dying.

  • Gatekeeper of Malakir - a 2/2 for but you are almost always paying the kicker () and having the opponent sacrifice a creature.

Now, to the movers and shakers for 3

  • Drana, Liberator of Malakir - A (kind of) Vampire Lord that can keep buffing your creatures as long as you can keep hitting your opponent. Most likely your opponent will have a flyer out by turn 3, but her first strike ability helps get around some of that.

  • Vampire Nighthawk - Flying, deathtouch, lifelink - I like this because it can make your opponent think twice before attacking with their flyers, unless they are able to keep bringing creatures back from the graveyard. Even then, you are still gaining life.

  • Bloodthirsty Aerialist - Flying and when you gain life she gets a +1/+1. I have used this card in MTG Arena and I have had a good deal of success with it. One drawback is that you don't see a benefit out of it until at least T4, but by then you should have a stable board to support her for one turn.

  • Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord - Typically, if Sorin resolves, I use his first +1 right off the bat (deathtouch, lifelink +1/+1) which you can use to pump up your other Vampires to help negate the loss of life from Castle Locthwain or Lacerator. I tend to hold off sacrificing any vampires until midgame, unless you are in trouble and need that 3 life. I keep his -3 ability on hold until I am ready to try and win the game, or if I am behind on mana.

Finally, the only converted mana cost of 4 card in the deck

  • Vampire Nocturnus - A great Vampire Lord that gives your creatures flying and +2/+1. If he hits the board you are almost always going to have a black card showing on top of your library, and can easily seal the deal in a turn or 2.

As for spells, there are only 2 sorcery spells

  • Inquisition of Kozilek - This 1 drop lets you maintain board advantage by getting rid of threats before they hit the board.

  • Thoughtseize - The most expensive card in the deck behind Mutavault. Like Inquisition of Kozilek above, for a you get to maintain your card and board state advantage, before your opponent can even play. The difference between the 2 is Inquisition of Kozilek targets nonland card with a CMC of 3 or less. Thoughtseize removes that restriction and lets you target any nonland card.

Instants

  • Disfigure - this lets you get through to deal damage to your opponent by wiping their early creatures or helping destroy damaged creatures with its -2/-2 for .

  • Fatal Push - A nice removal spell for early board state advantage, or mid-game if your opponent sends something of yours to the graveyard.

  • Tragic Slip - Again if you need to get rid of something small early or finish something off this inexpensive instant will do the trick. If you had a vampire die, well then, -13/-13 should get the message across that you mean business.

  • Victim of Night - A nice converted mana costing spell that (unless you are playing a mirror deck or changeling deck) should take care of any threat your opponent puts on the board.

  • Hero's Downfall - I struggled with mainboarding this, but if your opponent gets a bonkers planeswalker on the board you have an option to deal with it, besides wasting creature damage, that needs to be blasting your opponent.

I was thinking of including the infinite combo Sanguine Bond / Exquisite Blood , but I felt like it wasn't needed, due to their high CMC. I feel like they would take up space on my sideboard, because if I want to put something in; it would be to speed up the deck...

I hope this explains why the deck is built this way.
I am open to constructive suggestions to help make this more competitive!

If you wanted to make this a little cheaper you can always drop the Thoughtseize s and add in a couple Duress . That should get it at or below $200.00. Budget is pretty subjective from player to player, but I hope someone else like this and gives it a whirl!

Thanks for stopping by!
