Sideboard

At first I really wanted to do full on Dragon Tribal and experimented with Dragon Tempest in Jund-colors when Dragons of Tarkir hit standard, but there's not quite enough good dragons around just yet. So I've toned it down into a more competitively viable Gruul-Dragons deck for now. Hoping for some great low cost dragons in Zendikar!

I've marked the cards that's up for rotation with the "altered" mark.

Ok, you know the drill. This deck takes a more midgame approach to the Gruul-formula, utilizing early ramp and efficient defence in the form of Elvish Mystic, Sylvan Caryatid & Courser of Kruphix to deploy one big threat after another. These threats either fly or have a big aggressive ground presence so your opponents have to deal with them as soon as possible, because you're probably gonna win a race for face.

Depending on your local meta or troubling matchups (mine's control at the moment!) the main deck can differ. Some prefer to have more removal a la Lightning Strike or Draconic Roar or maybe even Roast there from the start while others prefer more lasting threats instead.

Specific mentions:

  • Destructive Revelry speaks for itself. Up against whip-decks or Ensoul Artifact? Don't you cry no more!
  • Crater's Claws is supposed to be your big finisher but can double as removal.
  • Anger of the Gods is a really solid sideboard and I wouldn't leave home without it! Even though it kills off your ramp (and Goblin Rabblemaster if you're playing that) that's not a big deal since it lets you delay the game and stabilize the board in your favour. The majority of your threats will survive it. As a bonus, it exiles Deathmist Raptors & Hangarback Walkers!
  • Draconic Roar , having access to more burn is always good! It lets you interact with your opponent, keeping troubling creatures down and out of your way. You've got a lot to choose from so grab a couple of those that deals best with what you're mostly up against!
  • Mistcutter Hydra/Gaea's Revenge, control keeping you down? Well, no more! Having threats that can only be dealt with in a certain way puts a spoke in the control wheel. Even though they have answers, forcing them to have the right answer might give you the break that you need to finish them off.
  • Atarka's Command , generally better in low-end decks that flood the board quickly, it's still decent in mid/late-end decks buffing your creatures for some extra damage or countering some life gain. I'd use the odd one in the sideboard against burst life gain, like Resolute Archangel . If I'm lucky, it'll wreck somebody going for something like that!
  • Evolutionary Leap, one of my most anticipated cards from Magic Origins. It works wonders against removal since you can sac in response and draw a random creature from your deck, keeping you fuelled up against control decks. Other uses is to just sac after getting into a bad block or trade unnecessary creatures for (hopefully) better ones. A random bonus is making sure your creatures hit the graveyard instead of getting exiled so that you get more use out of Haven of the Spirit Dragon. I'm also running two token generators in the form of Goblin Rabblemaster and Xenagos, the Reveler, which let's me trade free creatures for actual creature cards if I'm in a bind.
