Tymaret Calls the Dead

Enchantment — Saga

(As this saga enters the battlefield and after your draw step, add a lore counter to it. Sacrifice after III.)

, — Put the top three cards of your library into your graveyard. Then you may exile a creature or enchantment card form your graveyard. If you do, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token.

— You gain X life and scry X, where X is the number of Zombies you control.

Neotrup If Tymaret Calls the Dead has one counter on it, can it be used indefinitely? (well until you run out of cards). Or can you only use the Saga once per turn?

Tymaret Calls the Dead I'm just coming back to MTG after a long break and had questions about Saga cards... (1) (As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter). Would an example of playing this card look like... Play on my main phase, put a lore counter on it then add additional lore counters on my next turns after my draw step? (2) When using this card, do lore counters get removed, or are they permanent? (3) (Sacrifice after III) Does this mean sacrificing the card when the lore counters hit 4?

Hey, KraKra21, thanks for checking out my deck!

Your suggestions are very reasonable, and the majority of my reasoning is pretty idiosyncratic! For self discard, I have to admit that I haven't much played with any of the current blue Merfolk Looter type cards in standard, and I don't have enough Lilianas or Rankle, Master of Pranks to feel really good about the black "everyone discards a card" options, at least off the top of my head. Personally, if I were going to try recurring Thassa's Oracle via Maskwood Nexus , I would probably play more self mill, by way of Tymaret Calls the Dead , and maybe back it up with Liliana, Waker of the Dead as insurance against drawing the Thassa's Oracle .

Also, I was originally playing a much bluer deck, with more shapeshifters and the U/G sagas. Thassa, Deep-Dwelling is just one of my favorite cards in standard, so she weaseled her way in the list when it made more sense; now she's one of the lone blue survivors.

I think a strictly B/G version of the deck would be fun, and potentially strong. Please let me know what you develop, and comment back with a link to your deck! I'll be delighted to try it out when my collection permits!!

Thank you for the suggestions King_marchesa, I had forgotten about those cards! I wish Liliana's Devotee was a zombie himself...I can see the Devotee in a different zombie deck which focuses on sacrifice effects. But Tymaret Calls the Dead seems like a great way to mill myself, and the eventual lifegain may come in handy. Maybe I can squeeze a couple in.

Liliana's Devotee is a good zombie lord. Additionally, Tymaret Calls the Dead seems pretty good here.

Hi there!

Not to bring you down here mate, but the deck seems a little inconsistent as is.

As I see it, there are several problems:

  • Lurrus of the Dream-Den has no targets aside from Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger, which makes it less than optimal. If Kroxa isn't in the yard, it's basically just a 3/2 lifelinker for 3. Kroxa is a fine option to have, but isn't a great target either, as it just goes straight back to the yard.

  • Same goes for Call of the Death-Dweller. Your only real target is Lurrus, as getting Kroxa would make for a very underpowered Mind Rot.

  • You only have Tymaret Calls the Dead to fuel your graveyard. Kroxa decks usually want as much fuel as possible to Escape a lot. That's why most lists also run Mire Triton and Magmatic Channeler. Not saying it can't be done without them, but when you add recursion in the form of Lurrus and Call, you really want there to always be good targets.

  • Aspect of Lamprey is a fringe limited playable. It gets worse by the fact that your curve is pretty high, meaning that sometimes it doesn't have a creature to attach to. If you feel like you need an effect like this, I'd suggest Inscription of Ruin. Not an amazing card either, but the flexibility makes it so it's rarely a dead card. Also remember that having an abundance of discard will empty your opponent's hand, at which point any following discard spells basically will be dead draws.

  • Same for Bad Deal - it's a bad deal, but more for you than your opponent.

  • Adding Fabled Passage would make the mana base smoother and add more fuel for Kroxa.

If you want this to be a hardcore graveyard/recursion deck, I think you'd be better off adding more fuel as well as cheaper creatures. If this is less focused on being competitive and more just for the fun of it, just disregard all the above.

But I hope that helps. Good luck!

I have a guide/repository for card-draw cards if you want to peruse it. You may find some cards with more synergies that you like. Weight of Memory can be decent for self-mill strategies, etc. EDH Card-Draw Master List

As for cuts... let's see...

I don't love Forgotten Creation, personally. I always felt like I had non-creatures I wanted to keep in my hand all the time. Your deck is a bit more creature-heavy than mine, so perhaps it's pulling its weight.

You have the necessary components for Gravecrawler combos, but not a ton of tutors to make them reliable to get out. As such, perhaps one of the weaker payoffs for that can go, such as Vengeful Dead or Plague Belcher. If you're using Buried Alive to find the pieces then you'll only ever need one, and Diregraf Captain is an excellent choice. That said, your deck is fairly token-heavy so perhaps the incidental groupslug is being underappreciated by me.

I don't really love Ancient Excavation or Compelling Deterrence.

Personally I think Endless Ranks of the Dead is a bit of a trap unless you're all-in on the token strategy, such as a Ghoulcaller Gisa or Sidisi, Brood Tyrant zombie deck. Very fun, but a bit win-more unless you can really make it pop off. I've never been satisfied with it's performance in my deck, but you're going wider than I do so perhaps it's fine. Something to think about though.

It all kind of depends on how much you're self-milling. You have a decent amount, but you aren't exactly going all-in. As such, Grimoire of the Dead may be a liability. I have played around with that card in some of my decks and it just seems to get removed before it works. When it did I usually won the game, though. It's fun, but unreliable. Rise of the Dark Realms is obviously more reliable but it's very pricey.

I never found the self-mill in my deck as useful as regular card-draw. There's not a ton of point to have 15 zombies in the graveyard if you only want to cast one or two of them over and over. There are payoffs, of course, but to me it feels like being in the middle-ground is way worse than being all-in or having minimal self-mill. I just hate milling over answers or Rooftop Storm!

I don't think you're running enough to make Nightscape Familiar worth it.

Honestly, I don't love Havengul Lich a ton. The color restriction makes it hard to use and you have lots of ways to bring out your own zombies already. He's better in a more mill-your-opponents strategy IMO.

Tymaret Calls the Dead is a bit of a weaker card. Exiling your own zombies is a bit of a non-bo (unless your self-mill strategy is really rolling). The lifegain can be nice but I'd rather run Whip of Erebos if that's the goal, or a better card-draw card if that's the goal.

Update: 3x Tymaret Calls the Dead in for 3x Call of the Death-Dweller

I had to move faster because there is a lot of very fast aggro out there right now. Tymaret Saga doubles up with Aphemia, the Cacophony to put out a lot of zombies and it works better than waiting on things to die to cast Call of dd
