WNM and TNM —Feb. 18, 2016
I made it to 2 modern tournaments this week, going 3-0-1 and 3-0 respectively.
Wednesday Night:
Round 1: 2-0 vs UR Ebony Owl Netsuke. Despite his 4 mainboard Gigadrowse and Exhaustion, I managed to make it through the tap-downs and aggro him down both games. Not too hard.
Round 2: 2-0 vs Budget RDW. When I saw the Hellspark Elementals, I knew this one wouldn't be too hard, even though burn is a bad matchup for me. Tasigur and Kalitas made the games much more manageable.
Round 3: 1-1 vs Abzan Company. Game 1 I landed a Kalitas, he played a Liliana, Heretical Healer Flip into a Fiend Hunter exiling my Kalitas. I bolt the Lili then Snap-Bolt the Fiend Hunter to get my Kalitas back, which went all the way. Game 2 he had a very iffy keep of 4 lands and 2 Birds of Paradise, then topdecked insanely into a win with Kitchen Finks and Murderous Redcap. Game 3 we went to time. The game could have gone either way.
Round 4: 2-0 vs Naya Burn. More burn? Cmon. Game 1 Kalitas went all the way. Game 2 I went Inquisition of Kozilek turn 1, Rise / Fall turn 2, and Kalitas turn 4. That ended it. I don't think my life dropped below 10 in game 2.
That ended the night at 3-0-1 which I was happy with.
Thursday Night:
Round 1: 2-0 vs Jeskai Control. Game 1 I got mana flooded while he got mana screwed. I got the better end of the deal, eventually making a big Kalitas and getting a Bloodghast and a Delver at the end. Game 2 we traded early, I eventually landing a Tasigur. He burns it to death, then I topdeck a second and cast that. Then I activate the second Tasigur's effect, then he burns it to death in response, then Tasigur's ability resolves and he gives it right back to me because my grave was Kalitas, Tasigur, and 2 Kommand. After that I activated Tasigur every turn for about 6 turns getting Faithless Looting every turn, which fixed my draws very nicely.
Round 2: 2-0 vs Jeskai Control. Game 1 he got stuck on 4 lands for a few turns before getting his 5th, but by then it was too late. Bloodghast, hand hate, and Snapcaster Mage was more than he could handle. Game 2 a lot of burn spells, Kalitas, and more Snaps did the trick.
Round 3: 2-1 vs Burn. Game 1 I didn't accomplish really anything. Total blowout in his favor. Game 2 I played turn 1 Delver, which flipped turn 2, then he tried to bolt it. I had a mana leak, but I let the bolt resolve. Turn 2 he tried to resolve an Eidolon of the Great Revel and made me glad I saved the Mana Leak. Tasigur a few turns later got pathed, which surprised me, but it was definitely good for him. Kalitas of the top was all I needed to win after that. Game 3, he got me down to 1 life and topdecked a land, letting me swing for lethal with Kalitas, Snap, and a Zombie token for the win.
That ended the night 3-0, so I won my TNM. I am very happy with that. It took me a long time, but I'm feeling very accomplished now. After going 0-3 for a lot of weeks playing UB bulk, I am very proud that I've now won my first modern tournament.
Maybe replace Rakdos Charm with some more efficient artifact hate. Hurkyl's Recall, Vandalblast, Ancient Grudge with a Breeding Pool mainboard all come to mind

@uskie Rakdos Charm also fills in the role of graveyard hate and possibly can also hate on token decks or Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker decks. It's here for it's versatility rather than it's artifact hate strength.

Lemmingllama is right. At the end of the day I don't really need that efficient of artifact hate, but rather I just need a critical mass and versatility. The curve in this deck is so low to the ground anyway that efficiency of cards like Rakdos Charm is just not an issue.
So with Eldrazi being popular, a lot of people are talking about Death and Taxes or Hatebears becoming popular. Both of these are super bad matchups for me because this deck kinda folds to that kind of hate. Mostly I find I just don't know how to approach the matchup, so any advice on what I should be trying to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's fundamentally a creature matchup. Just kill their things.

Oh. That's it? Hatebears / D&T are both matchups where efficiency is super important, so Lightning Bolt should shine, but Terminate seems super inefficient against them and Inquisition of Kozilek doesn't build tempo, and tempo seems kind of important in that matchup too. Engineered Explosives and Pyroclasm are likely pretty good. Counterspells feel wrong in that matchup, but PLEASE tell me if I'm completely incorrect about that. Remand looks like it should be sided out. Is Darkblast good enough? I doubt it.
Those are my thoughts at the moment, with my main questions being: is Terminate too inefficient against them? Are counterspells as bad as they sound against them? Is the tempo loss of hand hate too much of a drawback or is removing their Leonin Arbiters (hate that card) worth it?
Thanks!

Remand is bad. Darkblast kills their mana creatures, Thalia, Mindcensors, Flickerwisps, etc. Lists vary a lot, so it's effectiveness also varies.
Discard is fine against them. Terminate is good because it trades with a creature. Their beatdown isn't very fast (usually), so you have time to set up.

I realized that after I posted that aha. I used to use Rakdos Charm as twin hate so I completely forgot about that ability. Also- have you considered running a third Snapcaster Mage? I'm saving up for a third one so I'm wondering how two works out for you.

Thanks. Guess I'll try that out. Voice of Resurgence takes a big steamy duke on my deck, so I know I can't make the matchup favored, but I also don't mind accepting it as a bad matchup since it isn't super popular yet.
uskie 2 Snaps is a budget thing. If budget weren't an issue, I'd have Lilis, 4 Snaps, Damnation.... (leaves the computer daydreaming about winning the lottery)

Oh man dude, what a nice deck. My only suggestion would be to drop the go for the throat for a Murderous Cut, but either way man, nice deck. +1!

Thanks! I run GFTT because affinity is favored anyway so I can handle 1 dead card and there are just enough pro-red problem cards that I like having a non-red removal spell. Additionally, I can avoid fetching as aggressively against aggro decks if I have this and pay BB or UB for it rather than having to have RB. Murderous Cut is not preferred because this deck can't delve quite effectively enough to support it. Also, I can't pay with delve if I try to Snapcaster Mage it, so that doesn't work either. It's some pretty subtle reasons to play GFTT rather than Cut, but I'm pretty sure that it's correct.

I like Go for the Throat over Cut here, but only two of your four reasons hold water.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that since Snapcaster Mage is giving it flashback, which is an alternate cost, additional alternate costs cannot be used in conjunction, such as Delve. I thought I read somewhere that it doesn't work, but I may be confusing it with the rulings for overload. I for sure that you can't pay overload when paying flashback. I'll make a post in the rulings forum, if it hasn't been asked already.

Delve isn't an additional cost, its a way of paying the cost. So you can still delve even when you flashback a Murderous Cut.

Alternate casting costs are formatted "rather than pay cardname's mana cost". Delve still works on flashback.

So Tron had a low showing at the Pro Tour metagame, so I've dropped 1 Crumble to Dust to include both Painful Truths and Darkblast in my sideboard. Painful Truths is surprisingly good against Eldrazi, which had an unfortunately large PT metagame percentage, and a must-have against some of the other big decks such as Scapeshift and Control of any kind.
I will likely adjust a little more based on the final results, but this might be the configuration of choice for now.
