Replacing BTE —Feb. 8, 2017

I got myself a playset of Heroic Intervention from the Ather Revolt pre-release at my local shop. I'm currently testing whether or not it's better than Brave the Elements but I think it might be simply because it is good for stopping things that would destroy your enchantments.

I think it's safe to say that if you swing with a 7/7 that has first strike, vigilance, lifelink, and trample on turn 3, then you probably considered to be a terrible person.

Correction, it would be a 9/9, not a 7/7.

my shop here's what would happen:

  1. all lands blown up

  2. all important spells countered

  3. burned out right when you tap out

  4. 8-rack kills your hand

  5. infect swings in to end game on turn 3

  6. (check out my stompy deck if you want to see how this would go) some a**hole manages to summon an eldrazi titan on turn 3-4.

My advice? Path to Exile mainboard, and 4x Hunt the Hunter in sideboard.

What do you think I should drop for the Path to Exile?

2x Fabled Hero 2x Hero of Leina Tower...also..Alpha Authority should certainly replace Ajani's Presence...i think its worth the extra colorless, personally....1 its permanent, and two, the more enchantments you use, the better...I would also think about trading a lion and Ajani, Mentor of Heroes for Ajani's Chosen...I know, I know, its not quite as flashy as a planeswalker, but It would really help your deck out, in my opinion. Chump blockers-attackers should never be underestimated, and ajini will be invaluable for making those.

I think I will definitely replace the Fabled Hero with Ajani's Chosen, but I'm not sure if I want to drop the Ajani, Mentor of Heroes because he is very useful for drawing more creatures and enchantments if the ones on the field are destroyed, and the powering up creatures and extra 100 life are also very helpful as well. Also, I don't think that Hunt the Hunter should go in because I will only have 1 green creature to use it on, and that's going to be the Fleecemane Lion. I was also thinking of replacing the Hero of Leina Tower with a 1 drop that gives me mana like an Avacyn's Pilgrim, what are your thoughts on that?

Atraxa_Daddy says... #7

right...forgot about that card. I would suggest another fight card, but without that +2/2 buff it wouldn't be as useful. Oppressive Rays may do the trick in sideboard. Yeah, mana ramp is a good thing 10/10 times. I would definitely run that card. They thing you have to remember is priority casting. Mana ramp always gets priority over other spells, so you will always want to cast it ASAP. I thought up a sideboard for you: 2x Sphere of Safety, 4x Leyline of Sanctity, 3x Quest for the Gemblades 4x Path to Exile 2x Stony Silence.

The deck is cool but there is such a thing as Boggles.

November 16, 2016 8:30 a.m.

Deputy_Cofax says... #10

What do you mean when you say "Boggles" (I'm still kinda new to the terms that long time players use).

November 17, 2016 11:09 a.m.

hunkers says... #11

Slippery Bogle,Gladecover Scout, and Silhana Ledgewalker. Because these creatures all have Hexproof your opponets can not target them with typical Removal spells like Lightning Bolt and Path to Exile. If you Turbo Enchant them you just win the Game.

November 17, 2016 2:56 p.m.

Deputy_Cofax says... #12

The problem there is that while yes the 1 drops with hexproof are harder to kill, if you don't put a bunch of enchants onto the Kor Spiritdancer the strategy is slowed way down, because of all the extra damage that you are missing out on.

The argument against Kor Spiritdancer is that you are giving your opponent a chance to use their removal spell instead of them just having a dead card in hand.

But you see, if you play Birds of Paradise first (which you should always do if you have one in hand) then you present your opponent with the choice of either burning the bird or waiting till next turn to try and burn the Kor Spiritdancer after you play it. But if you have 3 open mana (which should be easy with the bird you played on the previous turn) then you can just shield the Kor Spiritdancer with Brave the Elements. Either way, your opponent will have wasted their burn, and you will have a living Kor Spiritdancer on the field ready for your enchants.

There are a lot of decks in modern that have graveyard interaction. I would putting in 2 Rest in Peace replacing some Quest for the Gemblades. You would want to sub in Rest in Peace replacing Gryff's Boon because of the anitsynergy they have with each other.

January 5, 2017 10:30 a.m.

Deputy_Cofax says... #16

yeah it could definitely work in the sideboard, but the problem there is as you mentioned the antisynergy with Gryff's Boon, and also it means that Rancor won't go back into your hand if somebody destroys it or the creature that it's on. But I'll put it into the maybe board just in case people want it as an option.

January 6, 2017 8:56 a.m.

In reference to the typical Boggles list that was mentioned above, getting the extra turn of attacking in (on turn 2) normally speeds up your win by a turn. A turn 1 Slippery Bogle or Gladecover Scout followed up by a turn 2 Rancor + Ethereal Armor means a trampling first-striking attack for 4 on turn 2, which means the turn 3 Daybreak Coronet will make the creature an 8/8 that presents a win on turn 4. Playing out a birds on turn 1 means you don't start attacking until turn 3, so on average you don't win until turn 5 with a good hand. Plus, you'll need to hold up protection of some sort if you don't want your creatures to be pathed or in a few days Fatal Pushed. Having creatures with hexproof is integral to a strategy like this. I've been playing a similar deck for a while in my competitive meta, so here's my list for your reference:

Let me know if you have any questions about the included cards, and good luck!

January 17, 2017 11:23 a.m.

Deputy_Cofax says... #18

Yeah I can see how that would work now, and I already know how something like Gladecover Scout is the bane of any burn/controly deck. I'll definitely add them in, but I still like the Kor Spiritdancer because of the card draw that it provides which will keep you from top-decking.

January 17, 2017 12:20 p.m.

You'll notice that even in the competitive builds, they still use Kor Spiritdancers for that very reason. My list includes 4 of them since even if you're not equipping the Spiritdancer itself, you still get the card draw from casting the enchantment. It is also a good backup plan, since the totem armor auras can still keep it alive against non-exiling removal.

Cool deck, but you definitely need Hyena Umbra

January 18, 2017 11:12 a.m.

Deputy_Cofax says... #21

Hyena Umbra is great, but I'm unsure of what I should drop in order to make room for it.

January 18, 2017 11:19 a.m.

I think that Selesnya Charm is not a necessary card. I would drop 2 of those and perhaps 1 Gryff's Boon for 3 Hyena Umbra. If you want, you can replace the other two Selesnya Charms with Path to Exile.

January 18, 2017 11:23 a.m.

Deputy_Cofax says... #23

Will do, but I like the Selesnya Charm because of the versatility that it brings, so I will be keeping 2 of them.
