legendofa on Commander bracket recommendation
2 weeks ago
SaberTech Yep, straight from the original announcement.
I'm starting to feel like there's an expectation of budget along with competitiveness. Like, this deck keeps wanting to be in higher brackets than its budget warrants. On top of the Blood Moon, there's a Citadel of Pain + Manabarbs combos that I would count as land denial. But, and I'm going to quote myself from another thread here, it simply can't compete with decks whose individual cards are worth more than this whole thing, or decks with six game changers and "I win" combos that land on turn 3. It just isn't up to that level. For reference, the deck is Do Not Mistake Peace For Passivity. Please, if anyone wants to offer thoughts or suggestions, I will happily accept them.
I promise I'm not trying to complain or prove a point. I'm feeling out how rigid the bracket restrictions should be, and what other people would accept. I want to avoid putting in $700+ worth of game changers and power cards into a $400 deck just because it also has a Blood Moon, and while I could switch out the Moon and the Citadel + Barbs combo, I honestly have no idea what I would put in.
I know Stax is the ultimate in "frustrating" and "not fun", but I like combo-control, and I don't want all my janky $200-400 decklists to be automatically lumped in with decks that are worth three times as much and three times as competitive. Erayo's Essence Flip and Leovold, Emissary of Trest have been sitting on the banlist for forever.

Cast And You Shall Reap

As I understand the Commander banlist (and as a very casual Commander player), it's kind of the "default" rule 0 discussion, intended for people who may not play with the same groups regularly. Personally, I'd rather have a default banlist and play a match than spend an hour debating whether or not Fastbond is fair in a deck that's "about a 7" whenever someone new shows up.
Once you have a dedicated and reliable group, it's perfectly acceptable to make your own banlist. If your group's okay with a proxied Ancestral Recall into Erayo's Essence Flip + Arcane Laboratory lock in an otherwise mid-power deck, go for it! Your group, your rules. But two groups' definition of what's reasonable and fair can be completely different (which means a whole new rule 0 discussion from scratch), there has to be some level of compatibility between groups (otherwise it's not a meaningful format), and organized Commander tournament settings shouldn't be purely pay-to-win. The ban list is there to give a little bit of standardization for a format that's notoriously hard to standardize.

Also, rather than make a new thread to discuss the "once per turn" restriction, I would like to say that that restriction makes perfect sense on Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant and Erayo's Essence Flip, but makes no sense on Whispering Wizard, so does anyone here have any guesses as to why WotC put that restriction on that card?

Erayo's Essence is neither, I'm afraid. But it's Erayo, Soratami Ascendant Flip who's on the banlist, not the other side.

I agree, it was a quick, attention-grabbing, lazy option for WOTC to take with these cards. But do we really need more? Honestly curious if there are constructive ideas besides the ban for those who find it that distasteful.
Option 1: Functional Reprints:
Would anyone play a functional reprint of Imprison? It would probably color-shifted into white or maybe blue, at which point the card pretty much exists already. What does a functional reprint of Invoke Prejudice even look like? Ice Cave, Erayo's Essence, and Decree of Silence are as close as I can see them printing. They already functionally reprinted Crusade as Honor of the Pure, and they don't print such wide-ranging color hosers as Jihad and Cleanse any more. I could see Jihad is a color-specific Riders of Gavony-type card. The two creatures don't even bear mentioning.
Option 2: Attach a Disclaimer:
This works fine in digital, but it's the paper copies that are the challenge. Someone playing the game isn't going to take time out to Gatherer search a card to see that WOTC doesn't approve. Putting an errata online doesn't do much for cards on a table, especially when it's the art or the card name that's the problem. The flavor is the problem. Not all parts of the history of the game need to be kept for posterity like they're a winning pro-tour play or something as ubiquitous or historic as Lightning Bolt or Black Lotus. Maybe some can be sacrificed for the Greater Good.
Option 3 The Ban-Hammer:
Not a great look, but at least (and most important for the company) it costs minimal resources.
One further comment...perhaps 28 decks out of the whole database is a statistically insignificant number, BUT we're comparing decks that run Cleanse for racist connotations to the ones that don't. At that point we're asking 'how much racism is too much?' Are we setting the racism tolerance at 15% or less? 10%? Is only 10% racist better than 26% racist?

Why is Sai, Master Thopterist good with big artifacts?
If anything i would have guessed that he is best when played with cheap artifacts that ar cantrips if it can be arranged. Maybe try a combo with Mox Amber & Erayo, Soratami Ascendant/Erayo's Essence... (since sai is legendary too).
Maybe spells like Thoughtcast, Reverse Engineer, could help the deck with consistency.
